Hey, I love your videos and the way you guys teach, so do t take too much offense. I'm not a beginner so I know what you're doing, but for someone unfamiliar with the steps it would be helpful to not wear all black bottoms as it can be difficult to tell if your stepping with the left or right foot. Just food for thought! Keep up the great vids and website!

This would be excellent instruction if her pants legs or shoes were different colors. With Black against black, I had a hard time figuring out with foot was doing what. I think black was the worst choice.

Excellent video! But even as a dancer who adores black I wonder (and this may sound rediculous), if it would help if both of the miss Meagan’s legs were different colours. Just so we know which leg to commence on. This is the easiest video to follow that I have found on this particular dance. Very clear and very prescise. I couldn’t fault it.

You know what really annoys me. The terms left side and right side pass. Super confusing! It depends on context. Left side pass you vacate on the right. Right side pass you vacate on the left. The left right thing is opposite. And to me its also confusing to say you "pass" on the left. You are squared up. She is passing in front of me not on my left. That causes me to think to much about the terms. I can't dance when I am thinking too much. I can dance pretty well, but my footwork is not always that impressive. But I don't want to impress anyone with my footwork. It's frustrating because I see other people who seem to learm faster than I do. I dance in bars alot this kind of technical footwork stuff is thrown out the window dancing in bars. Your partner usually does not know enough about WCS or they know too much and they act snoody. I would like to learn this dance better but I think the people in the studios get on my nerves when they teach this stuff and you are just going out there having fun. I wish the bar people would take more time to learn from you guys and I wish the studio people would relax and just have fun more. My background is 30 years of freestyle body popping breakdance. I feel discouraged because I look at these world class WCS dancers and think damn I can do that improv stuff but I can't even master the basic WCS step that Ive been working on off and on for like 5 years. I wish I could just get the basic WCS behind me. I get tired of the criticism from other Westies when I am judt out there having fun. I don't really want to compete. I just want to go out there and have fun and see the inhibitions of my partner lowered and see them have fun too. I also think I want to be unique and not be cookie cutter. I don't have a high income. I am a janitor. I know I would benefit from private lessons but I am nervous about getting the wrong teacher who I don't click with.

***I'll try to give you some thoughts...
*** I agree it's kind of confusing. You will also hear it called a left side pass and an underarm turn.
I can't dance when I am thinking too much. I can dance pretty well, but my footwork is not always that impressive.
***Footwork becomes less important at some point but you have to know the rules to break them.
But I don't want to impress anyone with my footwork. It's frustrating because I see other people who seem to learm faster than I do.
***We all learn at different rates. Just put in the time and be patient (or be impatient but still put in the time:-)
I dance in bars alot this kind of technical footwork stuff is thrown out the window dancing in bars. Your partner usually does not know enough about WCS or they know too much and they act snoody.
***People will be people. You'll find some frustrating ones but you'll also find some awesome people. It's just like life.
I would like to learn this dance better but I think the people in the studios get on my nerves when they teach this stuff and you are just going out there having fun.
***Some studios are like that. Some are not. Take some time to find a teacher that you jive with. They will be your greatest asset.
I wish the bar people would take more time to learn from you guys and I wish the studio people would relax and just have fun more.
***Probably a true statement but you can find awesome people in both places.
***Finding a good teacher that you can develop a relationship with might be a good place to start. They might be able to shorten the path to your goals.
I get tired of the criticism from other Westies when I am judt out there having fun.
***Again some of those people can discourage you but you should also find some awesome people too!
I don't really want to compete. I just want to go out there and have fun and see the inhibitions of my partner lowered and see them have fun too.
***Competitions are not for everyone for SURE. People find fun in social dancing, some in competition. There is room for everyone!.
I also think I want to be unique and not be cookie cutter.
***Just master the basic concepts and then you'll find your own unique groove.
I don't have a high income. I am a janitor. I know I would benefit from private lessons but I am nervous about getting the wrong teacher who I don't click with.
*** Spend some time talking to students. Ask for recommendations. Take some time talking to some teachers. Tell them your situation and goals. Ask them some questions to help make sure they are right for you.
      STAY POSITIVE!!!
Wishing you the best of luck!
      -Brian

Wish the language wasn't so gendered. Not all women want to learn to follow!

    • @WestCoastSwingOnline
      @WestCoastSwingOnline  5 лет назад +1

Super sorry you feel that way. I agree that men and woman can both lead and follow.
Please be patient, I really try to keep the language "leader & follower"
With 100's of videos online we have worked to move our language to 'leader & follower' but we still struggle with comments like yours on some of our earlier videos when we were not so good even though we have improved over the past couple years.;-(
I do refer to Megan as 'she' because my follower in the video happens to be a 'she' several times in the video but I also do a 'pretty good' job of keeping the language as "leader & follower"
Also understand we do have lots of traditional and non traditional leaders and followers that watch the videos so I do mix a shade of both languages on purpose.
For instance the leader will search for 'leaders & mens' styling equally but followers search for 'ladies styling about 9 to 1 vs. 'followers styling' so we title our videos along those lines.
I hope you understand that we work really hard to provide as much free value as we can to WCS dancers across the globe.
I hope you can be patient with us.
      All the best in dance,
      Brian B

@@FeatherHair24 We really are. Of course our WCS event is degendered - derbycityswing.com/ (that's the norm these days) but our new Country & Swing event is 'open roll' so people can chose their roles. nuluopen.com/ (that's not the norm in the country world but we are trying to be as inclusive as possible. With this video you commented on from 2 years ago... we've (or should I say I cause Megan is quite ;-) have improved our "leader/follower" language. We're trying! -B

I am sorry, but limiting the dance to a slot - which here is more perverted to a line-dance almost - is NOT what you see in PRO competitions. Yes, they dance a certain "line" to show both partners to the judges and audience (hollywood vs savoy, says hello). But this line moving is so limiting to the dance.
Question: no Pro (watch Ben Morris) does it this strictly and rightly so, because it would be utterly boring to watch - very monotonous, cuz way too linear. So why teach this mind limiting concept of slot and line to beginners?
No thank you! If I am in a sort of slot then this is the !_result_! of me being connected to my partner, not because we are limited by this dance to a slot. BIG DIFFERENCE!

THANKS FOR YOUR FEEDBACK PING PONG...
LET ME SEE IF I CAN REPLY (IN CAPS) TO YOUR QUESTIONS & POINTS (in lowercase)
I am sorry, but limiting the dance to a slot - which here is more perverted to a line-dance almost - is NOT what you see in PRO competitions.
NOPE. PROS DO A LOT OF COOL STUFF BUT THOSE THINGS ARE NOT APPROPRIATE FOR BEGINNERS.
IT'S OUR PERSONAL GOAL TO HELP PEOPLE MOVE FROM THE BEGINNER STAGE INTO BEING MORE COMFORTABLE
TEACHING A NEW ART STUDENT HOW TO MIX YELLOW AND BLUE PAINT TO MAKE GREEN IS A FUNDAMENTAL STEP BUT IT WILL NOT ALLOW THE STUDENT TO CREATE BEAUTIFUL ART RIGHT FROM THE JUMP.
Yes, they dance a certain "line" to show both partners to the judges and audience (hollywood vs savoy, says hello). But this line moving is so limiting to the dance.
SURE. BUT IT IS A FUNDAMENTAL OF WHERE WCS CAME FROM.
Question: no Pro (watch Ben Morris) does it this strictly and rightly so, because it would be utterly boring to watch - very monotonous, cuz way too linear. So why teach this mind limiting concept of slot and line to beginners?
BECAUSE WE ARE NOT BEN MORRIS LOL
THERE IS A PROGRESSION IN LEARNING ANYTHING, ESPECIALLY SOMETHING AS COMPLEX AS WCS.
BEN HAS COUNTLESS YEARS ON THE DANCE FLOOR TO CREATE WHAT HE DOES.
IT WOULD BE IRRESPONSIBLE (FOR ME PERSONALLY) TO TEACH THOSE COMPLEX CONCEPTS TO A BRAND NEW BEGINNER. (ESPECIALLY VIA VIDEO WHERE THE STUDENT DOES NOT GET FEED BACK FROM ME AS A TEACHER)
TEACHING VIA VIDEO CAN BE A WONDERFUL TOOL BUT IT DOES HAVE IT'S LIMITATIONS
No thank you! If I am in a sort of slot then this is the !_result_! of me being connected to my partner, not because we are limited by this dance to a slot. BIG DIFFERENCE!
I'M NOT SURE EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN BUT THATS THE JOY OF WCS....
      LOTS OF DIFFERENT MUSIC
      LOTS OF DIFFERENT STYLES
      LOTS OF DIFFERENT DANCERS
HOPEFULLY PEOPLE CAN FIND SOMETHING THAT THEY ENJOY!
      BEST WISHES,
      Brian B

      Hi there
Why do you dance a figures on a count of 6?
Isnt it normally the case that you dance wsc on a count of 8? What do you do with the missing 2 counts then ?

    • @WestCoastSwingOnline
      @WestCoastSwingOnline  5 лет назад +2

@@blibliblablub GREAT question! Many dances do not dance their basics over 8 beats of music. East Coast Swing, Hustle, Two Step just to name a few.
The best way to think about WCS is in 2 beat increments. There are a couple articles on our site that discuss this in more detail: www.westcoastswingonline.com/a-two-beat-dance/ & www.westcoastswingonline.com/learning-the-wcs-rhythms-6s-and-8s/
If you want a more advanced way of counting WCS... I explain in this video: www.westcoastswingonline.com/1-key-wcs-musicality/
