Yes Cat, they are so formed so as to screw themselves into a firmer position in the sand or rocks etc, pretty cool eh?

What they refer to as a "mermaid's purse",which they attach to like seaweed is actually a shark's egg sac,made out of carapace.

IM not sure about that, they are quite gelatinous when they first come out, quite soft really, as far as I know they actually stay that way but harden when out of the water
