Thank you for this informative video sir. I think I am in category 1 or 2. My goal was to get into Pasadena Artcenter. I took their night classes and met this wonderful chief designer randall smock at Honda/Acura R&D. I try and follow those wise words he told me to take my time. Took more classes met more wonderful respectful teachers. Because of them today I am where I am. The things they taught me to get into artcenter helped me a lot. Yes. I’m shy. But deep down I want a job as a designer and die as that title. My will and ego will keep pushing me because I feel that that’s the only satisfaction I will get in life. I was among the pick and even got a phone interview... told me my portfolio does not reflect on my grades.. my gpa was Below 3.0 line... so I took automotive classes at cypress community college training to be a technician/mechanic, make my tuition money, living, etc. (it’s not design related). But those classes helped me raise my gpa over 3.0. I’m trying to commit again, it has beeen over a year since that phone interview to be accepted to artcenter. I did everything they asked. What my portfolio needed took their classes, etc. and even raised my gpa. Because that’s where the internship wants.. someone from a professional school with great title and being a great designer. Listening is a big factor. Anyways that was my thought watching this video. And they say “keep practicing” ah I regret starting again. I wish I would of kept going but those automotive classes are no joke.
I feel stuck in between graduating and getting the job. I’m working on my portfolio to improve this as I know it’s not the best quality. My biggest weakness is being confident and contacting people proactively like how you suggested. I know been building my LinkedIn and Instagram. Thank you for the video
I can understand Ryan. Portfolio is a never-ending process. So after you update what you have, just send it over people to get feedback and create connection with them. Later you can update your portfolio and say `I listened your advice and updated my portfolio, thank you` so you can show you care about their advice. It takes time I know.. :) dont give up!

I think is misleading, car designing = mechanical engineering / car drawing = industrial design and styling! You are forgeting that "design" a car IS NOT ABOUT drawing it! Is about ENGINEERING !

I’m going to take a shot in the dark here. I am an architecture student in my final year of study. I have discovered I don’t like designing buildings. How valuable is this background to the field of car design? I have a background in solid works too!
Architecture is also creative design field. So you are not that far actually. But you need to improve yourself a lot. You can do masters in car design but more importantly you should focus on car sketches and design now. You need to catch up with competition and show your ideas in the best way. If you are seriosly interested in, I would suggest you to check out my courses (links are in description) :) I have a friend who studied architecture, then he did masters in car design and now he is at Lamborghini. So it is possible ;)

I’m 13 and I have loved cars all my life and a car designer sounds perfect but I don’t know if I will end up being a car designer because it sounds like not many people get to be a car designer and I don’t want to spend ages perfecting my car designs and end up not being one so can someone please help!!!!
Hey there, yes it is really challenging as i mentioned on the video.. And yes there is a possibility to not end up as a car designer. However you can find similar fields like industrial design or entertainment design which are amazing creativity and fun too! So depends on what is your real interest, if you want only supercars and thats the only passion maybe design is not your passion. If you like to create anything and drawing and inventing etc then you can start to chase car design and if it doesnt work you can switch to similar fields as i said!

Dear Berk, i am writing this to get an answer to my personal question from u. Since i remember myself, i have been into car world.. i love how many different sides and spheres cars industry can have. Dodge, Subaru and Lamborghini (as u can see from my channel name, which has been created in 2015 (when i was 12)) are my fav car companies, though i am amazed by many different car production models and especially concepts by Marcello Gandini. I am 17, name is Ilkin and i have enrolled to DEU in Izmir from Azerbaijan, studying computer engineering. It is not that hard, i can handle it, but i don't see myself doing this job for the rest of my life AT ALL. Well, many wise people have advised me to not change my faculty, as the future of humanity depends on computer sphere.. blah blah. Do you personally think i should jump into designing, bcs i have some experience with modeling, rendering and animating. Can it be a plus (con) ? The main question is answered by me, i can sacrifice my life to car design, but what about the material part. Is it better to be an IT-er, have many job offers with a good salary or be a part of this wonderful car universe, have a difficulty with finding a job? Is it worth risking? Your answer will have a huge affection on my choices. p.s. excuse me, but that shelve got me drooling :D

However I can suggest you to start sketching cars, to see how it goes. For that I created my course and you can learn tricks to sketch like a professional car designer. Yes car design is a job and you can work with car companies. Can it make you rich? I dont know, depends on how much money is rich for you. However if you will be money focused; i wouldnt recommend to choose car desinger path

Hello I started designing cars in the 3D world at the age of 13 and now I have mastered car modeling and design ... But I have a question for you: How do I send my designs to car companies? Because I really do not know the ways of communication, I am grateful for your help
I have a question... If you do want to do this as a hobby, you start to design cars, how do you know which car company you are designing for? Like, you start sketching, and as you are sketching, are you thinking "I'm going to design for BMW" or Ford or Lamborghini? Or do you just sketch and just design something and say, "yep, that could be a Ferrari car"
Thanks that was very informative. I have one question as a industrial design grad who is into transportation design department. Knowing how to use 3ds Max and Alias and solidworks too, if I model a car in Alias since it's Nurbs and quality surfacing for concept work development and simulation, I've been told that the project will then be moved into catia or any software engineers use to add thickness on the body parts I made in Alias to be ready for production like producing steel tooling for pressing.. so my question is, do I have to know Catia and other engineering advanced softwares? Or should I just stick to A class surfacing in Alias then they will handle the rest of the job?
Hey Ken, I'm glad you like! In car design studios you will not need engineering softwares. You will also not need to do A Class Alias model. There are Alias modelers to do that. You need to know alias on medium level to create sketch model of your design. And today, polygonal modeling is getting popular again to put ideas in 3d quicker as 3dmax or Blender.

Thank you! Cars are designed by teams, not by one designer generaly. So you can find head of exterior, interior designers or head of designer for brands easily. But for spesific cars` responsible designers, sometimes you can`t find im afraid..

Hi! yes it all depends on you, with the base of industrial design you can improve yourself on different fields. Wherever you go you will need to improve yourself out of school anyway!

How long did it take you after graduating college to get that first job into what you were working towards? and where did you start at when it came to the designing of the car?
i already started as part time designer when i was studying in bachelor degree. Then I got my masters degree in car design and right after that i started internship at Italdesign. Then i started working there, so there was no gap in between education and work
So because you are a Car-designer I have a question: There are Cars like the Multipla wich look..... questionable.... and I mean that thicc hump on the Multipla makes kinda sence because the View from inside is better and they mounted Light´s on that hump wich is practical! But I mean on designs like the Pontiac Aztek there´s not really a benefit in the design. So why did they designed the Aztek like it is? And what was going through there Minds when designing the Aztek?
there are many things which affects the design. engineering requirements, cost efficiency, safety regulations, different visions.. So you never know the story behind it. :)

Hi, it might be not you dream about. Car design is not done by 1 person and not an easy process. many people come together to build a car from scratch. I’m going to take a shot in the dark here. I am an architecture student in my final year of study. I have discovered I don’t like designing buildings. How valuable is this background to the field of car design? I have a background in solid works too!
Architecture is also creative design field. So you are not that far actually. But you need to improve yourself a lot. You can do masters in car design but more importantly you should focus on car sketches and design now. You need to catch up with competition and show your ideas in the best way. If you are seriosly interested in, I would suggest you to check out my courses (links are in description) :) I have a friend who studied architecture, then he did masters in car design and now he is at Lamborghini. So it is possible ;)

I’m 13 and I have loved cars all my life and a car designer sounds perfect but I don’t know if I will end up being a car designer because it sounds like not many people get to be a car designer and I don’t want to spend ages perfecting my car designs and end up not being one so can someone please help!!!!
Hey there, yes it is really challenging as i mentioned on the video.. And yes there is a possibility to not end up as a car designer. However you can find similar fields like industrial design or entertainment design which are amazing creativity and fun too! So depends on what is your real interest, if you want only supercars and thats the only passion maybe design is not your passion. If you like to create anything and drawing and inventing etc then you can start to chase car design and if it doesnt work you can switch to similar fields as i said!

Dear Berk, i am writing this to get an answer to my personal question from u. Since i remember myself, i have been into car world.. i love how many different sides and spheres cars industry can have. Dodge, Subaru and Lamborghini (as u can see from my channel name, which has been created in 2015 (when i was 12)) are my fav car companies, though i am amazed by many different car production models and especially concepts by Marcello Gandini.
I am 17, name is Ilkin and i have enrolled to DEU in Izmir from Azerbaijan, studying computer engineering. It is not that hard, i can handle it, but i don't see myself doing this job for the rest of my life AT ALL.
Well, many wise people have advised me to not change my faculty, as the future of humanity depends on computer sphere.. blah blah.
Do you personally think i should jump into designing, bcs i have some experience with modeling, rendering and animating. Can it be a plus (con) ? The main question is answered by me, i can sacrifice my life to car design, but what about the material part. Is it better to be an IT-er, have many job offers with a good salary or be a part of this wonderful car universe, have a difficulty with finding a job? Is it worth risking? Your answer will have a huge affection on my choices.

Hey man, thanks for your comment! At the end it will be your decision because nobody can know what will happen. It is really competitive field to find a job so there is no clear answer. However I can suggest you to start sketching cars, to see how it goes. For that I created my course and you can learn tricks to sketch like a professional car designer. I am doing an apprenticeship in technical product design but currently that has nothing to do with car design.
After the apprenticeship I would like to go more into the car design direction (like rim design) so my plan is to go to a car show (essen motor show) here in Germany and ask around.

Yes car design is a job and you can work with car companies. Can it make you rich? I dont know, depends on how much money is rich for you. However if you will be money focused; i wouldnt recommend to choose car desinger path

I have a question...
If you do want to do this as a hobby, you start to design cars, how do you know which car company you are designing for? Like, you start sketching, and as you are sketching, are you thinking "I'm going to design for BMW" or Ford or Lamborghini? Or do you just sketch and just design something and say, "yep, that could be a Ferrari car"

Thanks that was very informative. I have one question as a industrial design grad who is into transportation design department. Knowing how to use 3ds Max and Alias and solidworks too, if I model a car in Alias since it's Nurbs and quality surfacing for concept work development and simulation, I've been told that the project will then be moved into catia or any software engineers use to add thickness on the body parts I made in Alias to be ready for production like producing steel tooling for pressing.. so my question is, do I have to know Catia and other engineering advanced softwares? Or should I just stick to A class surfacing in Alias then they will handle the rest of the job?
Hey Ken, I'm glad you like! In car design studios you will not need engineering softwares. You will also not need to do A Class Alias model. There are Alias modelers to do that. You need to know alias on medium level to create sketch model of your design. And today, polygonal modeling is getting popular again to put ideas in 3d quicker as 3dmax or Blender.

Cars are designed by teams, not by one designer generaly. So you can find head of exterior, interior designers or head of designer for brands easily. But for spesific cars` responsible designers, sometimes you can`t find im afraid..

Great to hear man! There are some differences but it also depends on schools. Apart from school you need to improve yourself anyway, never be enough with school ;)

Hi! yes it all depends on you, with the base of industrial design you can improve yourself on different fields. Wherever you go you will need to improve yourself out of school anyway!

How long did it take you after graduating college to get that first job into what you were working towards? and where did you start at when it came to the designing of the car?
i already started as part time designer when i was studying in bachelor degree. Then I got my masters degree in car design and right after that i started internship at Italdesign. Then i started working there, so there was no gap in between education and work
So because you are a Car-designer I have a question: There are Cars like the Multipla wich look..... questionable.... and I mean that thicc hump on the Multipla makes kinda sence because the View from inside is better and they mounted Light´s on that hump wich is practical! But I mean on designs like the Pontiac Aztek there´s not really a benefit in the design. So why did they designed the Aztek like it is? And what was going through there Minds when designing the Aztek?
there are many things which affects the design. engineering requirements, cost efficiency, safety regulations, different visions.. So you never know the story behind it. :)
@@BerkKaplanDesigner eah you right but I think It´s also pretty cool to have such funny looking cars. And without questionable Designs there wouldn´t be the cool and Legendary Designs like the Maclaren F1 or the BMW 8series (The old one)
