I'm so jealous. Our family lived in Anchorage from 1970 to 1999. My husband wanted to retire outside to get away from the winters. He was a police officer for 20 yrs and 10 yrs in Prudhoe Bay before retirement. He passed away in 2007 i've now decided I want to go back home to AK. Been looking on Zillow etc but have decided to come up there next year. I'm thinking the Soldotna area since we once had a place up Funny River Rd and we loved it. I'm in Idaho now where he picked to live....I hate it.
Loved this video...and your saying only one life live it. That's what I want. To live the rest out in my beloved Alaska.❤❤

Just found your channel, have watched several so far, skipped ahead to Q&A to learn more. I saw in comments on early vid you were in Morrow Co., I am east of Johnstown. Thought I would live on this land all my adult life, bought 20 acres in 1982. The Intel buildup will likely force me out, property values going thru roof. Destroying farmland hundreds of acres at a time. So sad, the entire area will eventually change and not be rural. Dream of Alaska, but CRPS/RSD means I struggle here, realistically I know couldn’t do AK. Was nice to see someone start out building and not in mud, swampy area. Good luck, will be watching.

Yes, I’ve been following the Intel mess. Sad it’s destroying such a quite rural area. I used to go to the huge flea market/coon dog trials there in Johnstown every year as a kid. Sorry about your medical condition, RSD is so painful. If you can’t move to AK maybe you’ll get the opportunity to visit one day🤞
I can’t tell you how happy I am that we aren’t building in the mud also 😆

Regular trucker positions within the state pay is similar to the lower 48 and housing is no cheaper. The economy is a mess.

    By the way, on dipnetting…
Kasilof is obviously much closer to y’all, but the fish suck IMHO. The south side of Kenai has sockeye and Kasilof only has Silver. The silvers are much smaller, and don’t taste as good. Definitely either do Kenai, or go crazy and hit up the copper. Both Copper and Kenai are better with a boat, especially copper because otherwise you are climbing up and down a veritable cliff face and that sucks.
If you want a King you can almost guarantee you’ll get in on the copper, and I’ve never seen one in Kenai or Kasilof. Kenai and Kasilof can easily handle the full 5’ hoop. Copper you are much better off with a 3’hoop because the current will drag you like crazy with a big net there.
Anyhow, good luck dipping! It is a great time, and so nice to get that food stores.

I loved Alaska. I was able to visit when my family moved to Kodiak with the Navy. He was a career Captain in the JAG with Mom and my four sisters and I. I left for college and came back for visits. He was there for 2 years and we lived on base. We drove up the AlCan HWY in an Open Road camper. Wow! Talk about dusty inside. But so beautiful. That was before the hwy was paved. Mom did work in town as a part time night nurse while there. My sisters attended school in town. There was a strong rivalry between base people and town folks. Very interesting. But the family was very busy with other military and town folks in a church there. Met many wonderful people! My second sister and I worked in the summer at a salmon cannery and a King crab cannery. It was an amazing experience. Hope your new homestead does well. Will pray for everything needed to be provided. God bless!

Love your channel, but I have to say it’s really very annoying to listen too you guys talk as you talk over each other and never let the other person finish what they are saying. Would be nice if you guys wouldn’t do that. It would make your videos a lot more interesting to watch and listen too! I’m not being an a&$ here, but that exactly the way all my northern friends do that I know from MI, IN, PA and OH. So like I said, love your videos but could you guys Not talk over each other so it would be more interesting to watch?
I really would like to talk with you guys about moving to Alaska and I’m a veteran of the Army. So I have a lot of questions if you guys would be willing to chat with me?
I’m sorry if I came off as an A-Hole, but I do enjoy your videos and look forward to your new ones. Thanks for making this one about the cost of moving and living there.
God Bless you two and I look forward to hearing from you if you’re able to? I’d be glad to give you my email address if that would work?
    Thanks, Todd

Maybe it’s a midwest thing, maybe it’s an old married couple thing, either way we’ll try and stop talking over each other on future videos. If you’re on Facebook feel free to send me a pm or my email is listed in the Description of the videos. Feel free to reach out. I’m happy to answer your questions.

    • @ouralaskahomestead

Many do. We hope to get some salmon this year and since we don’t have any way to freeze it we will most likely smoke it then can it. Probably won’t try for a moose until we get a good solar set up and have a deep freezer.

Thing is the dogs are so smart way smarter than myself! I've had rat terriers which are great poodles my daughter had the little fluffy dogs that look like a dust mop, can't think of the breed, also another little dog Scottish terrier or something like that. But they've all been wonderful pets and we're rescue animals! If I had a lot of money I'd have a rescue kennel shelter,so many abused abandoned animals!!

You guys made such a great choice buying in Anchor Point! Great amenities on both sides in Ninilchik and Homer.. Yeah I asked because no one told us when we started on our cabin either.. you can apply for an owner-builder card with the Kenai Peninsula Borough and show it at home depot or SBS and anything that’s a “permanent fixture” in your home will be tax free. It doesn’t work online but you can go to Home Depot and they can order anything on their website to the store and then that will be tax free when you pick it up.. apparently someone will come once a year to look at your property and make sure you made any progress but I’ve heard it’s a very simple process and well worth the savings💵

We’re planning on a small garden this year along with a handful of chickens and ducks. There was an old porcelain bathtub left on the property im planning on turning into a duck pond and Craig builds the cutest chicken coops for me. We do have a lot of moose that visit so I’ll have to be sure and put up a tall fence so they don’t eat my veggies. Next year we’ll expand and add meat rabbits and maybe a pig or two.
