As a very mixed European Irish gran and great gran, Welsh, English and Scandinavian from my mum - Polish father (Baltic too) I love the tradition of setting an extra place at the Christmas table for those who can't be there; some people say its for the Christ Child but we always said it was for my Polish grandparents who were no longer with us. Everyone here have a lovely or peaceful time over the next few weeks.

Thank you for sharing that lovely tradition. I will be doing that for my mom. I also lost her a few months ago. She was a week away from her 68th birthday and I was supposed to have my wedding that previous Saturday. I’m heartbroken and lost without her.
We did this at our church circle Christmas dinner out. We lost one of our members this year and the extra place setting was in her memory. We ended the meal with a toast to her memory.

My husband and I have been doing DIY for over 30 years in four different houses. Please just save your money and buy quality supplies. Remember that the cheap comes out expensive in the end! Dainty, you can do tiling easily. You have great skills and tiling is one of the easier projects! ❤

That was a nice evening with the kids - how fun! I don´t know but back in the day people just saved up to change or replace things with high quality products so they lasted a long time. Drunk swede commenting so excuse the horrible english coming but here we go friends: I dont't know if you know, but when your christmas tree gets those light green tips in spring you can snip them which makes the tree grow fuller. This method it used when sculpting trees , bushes and whatnots. Pretty neat to do with a tree you know you'll bring back in next christmas and then plant outside.

I completely agree with you regarding the ‘sticky’ stuff! The less plastic the better, I try to re use rather than buy ‘new’ manufactured ‘stuff’. (That’s one of the reasons why i especially adore the writing desk in your bedroom- what a find girl! I’m a vintage lover at heart, to the extent of refilling my kitchen to plain square white tiles (much like your current tiles) as they are timeless (and therefore buck *fashionable ‘ trends. NO GREY in my house!! I am so glad you won’t have to weather this Christmas alone & that you are going to others. … Give yourself grace this Christmas please. You definitely will not have any problems with tiling as you have great wood working skills. I would advise buying a wet saw ( again you have great power saw skills). I do like Channels that help you shop your closed/wardrobe and make outfits from what you already have, good inspiration also goes for DIY, everything is so expensive now 😮 your tree looks so nice with just the lights and especially in the evening, a lovely glow. Last time I had a potted tree I had to cut a disc of cardboard to cover the soil so the cats couldn't dig & go toilet. I cut a slit along the radius and removed a small circle from the centre to allow for the trunk and decorated it with nice paper.
In the US, the home improvement stores like Home Depot offer free classes on tiling and other simpler projects. Perhaps the same is offered there? A tile cutter is needed, but you should be able to rent one for a project. Definitely try tiling; it is easier than it seems! Tiling a backsplash is very doable. It just takes good planning. I did my entire en suite to the ceiling and I swore never again! I learned to do tiles when we bought our 1st house. I was younger 😊😅. Since then, I've tiled 3 houses, from kitchen to bathroom. I love it, but alas, it's hard on the knees when doing floors. I encourage you to do it. It's a great skill to have. ❤

Instead of tiled backsplashes I have always used tongue and groove wood. It is very hardy, you can easily give it a fresh coat of paint or change the colour when you fancy:). Much cheaper than tiles too! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

In the US, many home improvement stores have classes on woodworking and tiling. Check your local stores and ask them if they don't have any if it's something they would be interested in doing. Hope you find a tiling class.
Oh I wish you were here in southern CA with me, it was 85 degrees with blue skies yesterday and today 83 degrees. I am enjoying the weather for both of us. Good on you Catherine for spending time with the kids, I do the same and it makes my day anyday. Looking forward to next year with you and you will do "GREAT" with tilling. For me the tile cutting is extremely easy and it is very safe using a tile saw. It is cleaning up the mess from the mastic/thinset that takes time. They have a new product that you can unroll on the wall that is sticking on both sides that you just set your tiles up and they stick (make sure you set your tile where you want it) and then just grout but it does cost a bit more for that product. Maybe I am the only one that makes a big untidy holy mayhem, but mixing the morter and putting it on the wall is not as easy for me as painting. But please try tiling you would much tidier and I know you will enjoy, if you need help just call and I will be right over (I wish). I will be watching when you unbox your new tile saw and I enjoy your videos every week.

I think you are so right. I want to change my counters and backsplash and would love to have marble or quartz instead of the wood effect laminate I have now. However, the quotes I've had make it difficult to commit. I have bought some marble effect "tiles" from Amazon and some sticky back plastic to do a temporary fix, just to see if I like it. If I love it I may splash out, but if not I'll go back to what I have, cause I don't hate it. Merry Christmas, Sweetheart. I love seeing you and your projects. Lots of love from NW England. I clicked on this video because I saw you using the peel and stick tiles and I’m so glad I did. I have been thinking about doing them all week but I’ve now decided to save up and buy tiles and do it properly. They always look so good when you see people using them but I’m now not convinced it’s a good idea, I was after a quick fix when in reality if I wait a couple of months I could get it done properly so thanks for the info, I think you saved me from making a mistake 😀
I'm so glad the video helped you decide, and I completely agree! While peel and stick tiles can seem like a quick fix, investing in proper tiles will give you a much more lasting and professional result. Also, your not saving much. For example the box of tiles I want to use is €36 and a pack of the peel and tile is similar in price. Obviously the cost of grout/adhesive and renting a tile cutter to be factored in, but will last in the long term x It's worth the wait and the effort to get it done right. I’m sure when you finally take the time to do it properly, you’ll be so pleased with the outcome. Best of luck with your project! 😄

I find it odd when people change their interiors frequently to keep up with trends, surely that's disruptive and it doesn't feel like your own cosy space? I love watching the kitties around your Christmas tree! It reminds me of your video last Christmas when they were babes climbing the tree❤. Last year I was at Dublin airport watching RUclips waiting for my flight home to US. I had attended my daughter’s graduation from uni in Edinburgh. I flew into Belfast and rode a bus down to the Dublin airport. I couldn’t go into see the city as I wanted because unfortunately there were riots that night. I've learned to always go classic and neutral with big ticket items. I can always play with the other decor which is much less expensive. So much easier to change pillow covers, throws, curtains, candles, towels, etc. when you get bored with a color.
I'm the same as you. When I was first married over 50 years ago a work colleague said to keep the big ticket items neutral and ring the changes with accessories and I've followed that rule ever since and I never follow trends either, I prefer to keep thing classic.

As a very mixed European Irish gran and great gran, Welsh, English and Scandinavian from my mum - Polish father (Baltic too) I love the tradition of setting an extra place at the Christmas table for those who can't be there; some people say its for the Christ Child but we always said it was for my Polish grandparents who were no longer with us. Everyone here have a lovely or peaceful time over the next few weeks.

My husband and I have been doing DIY for over 30 years in four different houses. Please just save your money and buy quality supplies. Remember that the cheap comes out expensive in the end! Dainty, you can do tiling easily. You have great skills and tiling is one of the easier projects! ❤

That was a nice evening with the kids - how fun! I don´t know but back in the day people just saved up to change or replace things with high quality products so they lasted a long time. And also they gave themselfs some time to think about what they want so they liked it for years to come (or forever in many cases). I think that is the way to go! Merry Christmas! 🎄

Drunk swede commenting so excuse the horrible english coming but here we go friends: I dont't know if you know, but when your christmas tree gets those light green tips in spring you can snip them which makes the tree grow fuller. This method it used when sculpting trees , bushes and whatnots. Pretty neat to do with a tree you know you'll bring back in next christmas and then plant outside.

I completely agree with you regarding the ‘sticky’ stuff! The less plastic the better, I try to re use rather than buy ‘new’ manufactured ‘stuff’. (That’s one of the reasons why i especially adore the writing desk in your bedroom- what a find girl! I’m a vintage lover at heart, to the extent of refilling my kitchen to plain square white tiles (much like your current tiles) as they are timeless (and therefore buck *fashionable ‘ trends. NO GREY in my house!! I am so glad you won’t have to weather this Christmas alone & that you are going to others. … Give yourself grace this Christmas please. I know this year has been especially rough for you and your family with losing your mum. I lost my parents 16 years ago and it's still tough at the holidays. My dad's birthday is December 25th. You definitely will not have any problems with tiling as you have great wood working skills. I would advise buying a wet saw ( again you have great power saw skills). Last time I had a potted tree I had to cut a disc of cardboard to cover the soil so the cats couldn't dig & go toilet. I cut a slit along the radius and removed a small circle from the centre to allow for the trunk and decorated it with nice paper.
In the US, the home improvement stores like Home Depot offer free classes on tiling and other simpler projects. Perhaps the same is offered there? A tile cutter is needed, but you should be able to rent one for a project. Definitely try tiling; it is easier than it seems!

Tiling a backsplash is very doable. It just takes good planning. I did my entire en suite to the ceiling and I swore never again! I learned to do tiles when we bought our 1st house. I was younger 😊😅. Since then, I've tiled 3 houses, from kitchen to bathroom. I love it, but alas, it's hard on the knees when doing floors. I encourage you to do it. It's a great skill to have. ❤

I've been following you for years, but never commented until now. I wanted to wish you as happy a Christmas as you can have. The first is always the most difficult (I lost both my parents within 6 months, so I went from a family Christmas one year to friend-surfing the next). Keep your family and friends close, you have all found joy in the activities you share.

Instead of tiled backsplashes I have always used tongue and groove wood. It is very hardy, you can easily give it a fresh coat of paint or change the colour when you fancy:). Much cheaper than tiles too! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

In the US, many home improvement stores have classes on woodworking and tiling. Check your local stores and ask them if they don't have any if it's something they would be interested in doing. Hope you find a tiling class.

Oh I wish you were here in southern CA with me, it was 85 degrees with blue skies yesterday and today 83 degrees. I am enjoying the weather for both of us. Good on you Catherine for spending time with the kids, I do the same and it makes my day anyday. Looking forward to next year with you and you will do "GREAT" with tilling. For me the tile cutting is extremely easy and it is very safe using a tile saw. It is cleaning up the mess from the mastic/thinset that takes time. They have a new product that you can unroll on the wall that is sticking on both sides that you just set your tiles up and they stick (make sure you set your tile where you want it) and then just grout but it does cost a bit more for that product. Maybe I am the only one that makes a big untidy holy mayhem, but mixing the morter and putting it on the wall is not as easy for me as painting. But please try tiling you would much tidier and I know you will enjoy, if you need help just call and I will be right over (I wish). I will be watching when you unbox your new tile saw and I enjoy your videos every week.

I think you are so right. I want to change my counters and backsplash and would love to have marble or quartz instead of the wood effect laminate I have now. However, the quotes I've had make it difficult to commit. I have bought some marble effect "tiles" from Amazon and some sticky back plastic to do a temporary fix, just to see if I like it. If I love it I may splash out, but if not I'll go back to what I have, cause I don't hate it. Merry Christmas, Sweetheart. I love seeing you and your projects. Lots of love from NW England. I clicked on this video because I saw you using the peel and stick tiles and I’m so glad I did. I have been thinking about doing them all week but I’ve now decided to save up and buy tiles and do it properly. They always look so good when you see people using them but I’m now not convinced it’s a good idea, I was after a quick fix when in reality if I wait a couple of months I could get it done properly so thanks for the info, I think you saved me from making a mistake 😀
I'm so glad the video helped you decide, and I completely agree! While peel and stick tiles can seem like a quick fix, investing in proper tiles will give you a much more lasting and professional result.
Also, your not saving much. For example the box of tiles I want to use is €36 and a pack of the peel and tile is similar in price. Obviously the cost of grout/adhesive and renting a tile cutter to be factored in, but will last in the long term x
It's worth the wait and the effort to get it done right. I’m sure when you finally take the time to do it properly, you’ll be so pleased with the outcome. Best of luck with your project! 😄

I completely agree with you about "fast fashion" trends for interiors (and in general).
I find it odd when people change their interiors frequently to keep up with trends, surely that's disruptive and it doesn't feel like your own cosy space? At least that's how I feel about it.🤷🏻♀️

I love watching the kitties around your Christmas tree! It reminds me of your video last Christmas when they were babes climbing the tree❤. Last year I was at Dublin airport watching RUclips waiting for my flight home to US. I had attended my daughter’s graduation from uni in Edinburgh. I flew into Belfast and rode a bus down to the Dublin airport. I couldn’t go into see the city as I wanted because unfortunately there were riots that night. I've learned to always go classic and neutral with big ticket items. I can always play with the other decor which is much less expensive. So much easier to change pillow covers, throws, curtains, candles, towels, etc. when you get bored with a color.
That’s so true!! Easier to swap out the decor items! And often it’s when all of the small things come together that makes the biggest difference 👏😍
I'm the same as you. When I was first married over 50 years ago a work colleague said to keep the big ticket items neutral and ring the changes with accessories and I've followed that rule ever since and I never follow trends either, I prefer to keep thing classic.
