One could argue the first idol anime was Pink Lady Monogatari from 1978 (a largely fictional biography of the real Pink Lady), but the show was an obscure failure produced by their talent agency back then. The same year, Go Nagai's Majokko Tickle was also inspired by Pink Lady to some extent and did make a direct reference to them in the anime, but the original concept wasn't really implemented in what ended up another cheaply made anime. I guess if it had been done right in 1978, it could have been the real original, but Macross did it in grand style and Ijima Mari had the talent and voice to make it shines!

Although I'd love to see SDF1 story continue, but....think about it...what happen if the story line continue like this.... 1. Hikaru & Misa got married and have kids 2. Minmay still in love with with Hikaru. 3 After Hikaru get bored with Misa (coz she is older than him), he goes back to Minmay and they start having an affair. 4. Misa later found out and confront with Minmay 5. Hikaru left Misa and their kids, and go marry Minmay Well...if the SDF1 story continue..... "in reality"....this really would happened. Reality sucks! Therefore, we better let our good story end there man.

Lynn Minmay was such a huge star, she became famous in two alternate universes. Macross and Robotech.
Robotech is just the american name for SDF Macross. It is the same anime and also the same universe.
