    Love the way he looks into camera before taking off.
    There is a dead tree behind our garage that a pileated goes to quite often. Sometimes will hear his call. Had a tree guy come and say, you need to take that dead tree down. Heck no!

    They are beautiful birds! We moved to Kentucky last year. Since I put up the bird feeders, we have a Pileated Woodpecker that visits from time to time. As regular visitors, we have a male and female Downey, a male and female Hairy, and a Red-Bellied. They are all beautiful. But our special one-time visitor (so far) was a Northern Flicker, and it was such a surprise and such a gorgeous bird! Thank you for all your tips. I have used them as I have started my bird feeding, and I have seen birds that I had never seen before. I still want to get cameras, so maybe soon.

    Those Pileated Woodpeckers remind me of the people with the REALLY bright (unnaturally) red hair. You occasionally see them on the birdcam Cornell has at Sapsucker Woods.

    You'll have to get a suet feeder sized for them. I found once they started showing up they quickly become regulars. And they feast for 5-10 minutes at a time! Sometimes the male and female show up together.

    We were doing hand-feeding at a trail that allows it along the north shore of Ontario a couple of winters ago. Lots of chickadees, and then my oldest had a nuthatch come in. Later she also had a downy woodpecker land in her hand and that freaked her out. 😂 The pileated is beautiful-I only get to see those way up in the treetops.

    I live in Kentucky. I had a pair visit my feeding area. They even built a nest about 50 feet from the food in a very tall oak tree. I was amazed at what a large limb they actually managed to remove from the tree and hollow out area to make a nest. They raised three little ones. Squirrels now nest in the hole they made. I have seen them many times since then, but they never built a nest so close again.

      The primary visible difference between the sexes is the colour of the line that runs from the bill to the throat. In males it's red (and this guy is indeed therefore male); in females it's black. Otherwise they tend to be equally bright.

    • @tpseeker3367

      I've tried a few different types of Wild bird seed. Seems the type that's empty for me by sunset seems to be the type with corn in it. Butt yes different seeds do attract different birds. And boy can they get spoiled on certain seeds & empty a feeder looking for sunflower or corn chunks.

    • @silverinkpot7
      @silverinkpot7 3 года назад +1

      Most birds love black oil sunflower seeds. But most mixtures have sprinkling of sunflower and lots of cracked corn and red millet which birds never touch. So the right mixture does make a difference. A mix with shelled sunflower, fruit, and nuts may be more expensive, but there is no waste from shells and you will get many more species.

    He's so pretty!
    Question. Do you ever have any rats at your bird feeders? I recently put some safflower seeds out for the birds, because I was told cardinals like it, but squirrels and swallows don't. Well, the swallows ate most of it, I think. And one time I happened to see a rat on the ground underneath the feeder eating the dropped seeds. I haven't put any seed out since. I live in an apartment, and I really don't want to take the chance of a rat being into my home.
    I hang the feeder from a short shepherds hook that clamps onto my porch railing.
    Then the other day I put a suet feeder out, and happened to look outside and saw a rat standing on my porch railing and eating the suet. I immediately took it inside. I don't dislike rats, but I cannot be attracting them with bird food. I've put bird seed out for a long time, and have never seen a rat at my feet until now. Only normal birds, squirrels, and sometimes ducks eating stopped seed from the ground. If you have any tips on how to keep the rats away, I'd be grateful to hear them. Thank you so much. I'm sorry for the long post.

    • @silverinkpot7
      @silverinkpot7 3 года назад +3

      Sophie, not sure what birds ate your safflower seeds, but swallows don't eat any seeds at all. Swallows only eat insects and are only in the U.S. in summer.

    • @SophieMia806
      @SophieMia806 3 года назад +1

      @@silverinkpot7...Thank you. I was tired when I typed that, and my brain wasn't fully awake. Lol. I meant to say sparrows, not swallows. At least I think they're sparrows. They're common in north Texas, and they're little brownish birds. I saw them a lot at the safflower seeds, but I'm trying to attract cardinals. And detract rats, and sparrows (as much).

    • @BirdWatchingHQ
      @BirdWatchingHQ  3 года назад

      Unfortunately, rats can be hard to stop when the birds drop seeds from the feeders. You can look at getting a feeder that doesn't drop seeds like the Absolute II feeders here is the link for it. bwhqstore.com/products/absolute-ii-hopper-bird-feeder-heritage-farms or you can take your feeders in every night
