We had to evacuate our home last week for a gas leak. It ended up being a small incident but we learned from it. The worst two things were trying to agree on whether to evacuate or not. It took an officer to tell him us. The pther thing was trying to round up five cats and get them into their carriers. We learned a lot grom this experience and are making changes as needed to our plan
My family is expecting our next baby within the next week, my husband and I have had to have these conversations in the event of medical emergencies, so we've made our preparations and involved our older children so they know what to expect when it's time to make our moves.
The tip about getting local maps is a very important one! We were in Western North Carolina for Helene and the entire regional cell network went down. No power and no cell service meant no GPS and no Google Maps. We haven't lived here long and I was stuck racking my brain just to remember how the major highways connected to one another, much less what secondary or tertiary roads might be available! It was a lot of extra stress that a good set of maps would've completely erased. Remember that in a disaster or evacuation, it's also going to be nigh-impossible to get gas, so you can't make a lot of mistakes and wrong turns while driving.
I have found good county maps at the chambers of commerce and state maps are prepaid with tax dollars at state welcome centers. Be sure to get new ones every year so they are up to date.
Don't forget to prep for your pets! Doggie backpacks, dog crates, extra leashes/collars, food and water, medication, dog first aid kit, dog sweater and raincoat, chew bone, copy of immunizations. I practiced loading our car with our human emergency kits, dog emergency kit, dog crates, and of course space for humans. It is snug but we can fit! This is literally the only reason I have not adopted more- no more room in the evacuation car! 🐾🐕🐕🐾
I have to say, while I have been watching for a while, I appreciate the short introduction of yourself where you tell us who you are what what the channel is about. Keep upbthe great work!.
Great intro to prepping video. Just want to note I have also obtained local maps from Chambers of Commerce, especially in smaller population areas. I also tie checking bags, emergency kits, vehicles, etc. to the solstices and equinoxes. That works for me. I've known people to do this when the time changes spring and fall, or tied to some other thing that occurs more often than once a year but less frequently than once a month. Or just put it on your calendar. You don't have to do all your checks at one of these times, in fact, I suggest doing some at one point and some at another to avoid being overwhelmed.
With weather related issues, living in northern New York biggest threat is winter. Snow storms being most common. We did have a big ice storm back in 98 and people were with out power for a month to 6 weeks. Still working towards covering all my bases
Thanks Kris. Always putting out excellent content. I keep a go bag in my car now. Last year we had flooding so bad I almost couldn't get home. 20 minutes later my road washed out. It was a big wake up call. I also don't keep anything on the floor in my basement in case it floods...and I don't really live in a flood zone...well, I didn't used to anyway :(
Been awhile since there's been a video like this. ( instructional vs recent news) I appreciate these kinds of videos, help those that have no idea what to do or where to start. With all the disasters and extreme weather, this video will benefit many! 👍
Another great video. The recent fires in Los Angeles City and Los Angeles County show how inadequate the authorities are prepared for a large emergency. Now imagine a regional disaster? Be prepared to be one your own for several weeks to a month. Just you, your family, neighbors and/or prepper group.
I have noticed very few people I am around know how to use a basic paper map. Each of my family members know how. But, we had to teach their friends and coworkers.
@@ATR1107. They are sold in a local department/grocery store near me, in the book section. You are also likely to find them in local book stores, and of course they can be ordered on line. For local and area maps, I'd check with the Chamber of Commerce. Many areas have them available at visitors centers. Every state will have state maps available, and you can probably get them for free from their tourism department. They weren't from the area and I kept thinking, who will they go to for supplies the first few days ? Sometimes the Holy Spirit works like that.❤
