Common Eider | Nature Near You

Common Eiders are large sea ducks that spend the winter right along Rhode Island's coast, hunting for mussels and urchins. OVF Naturalist Kim Gaffett found a recently deceased Eider on Block Island, and took the opportunity to share this impressive bird with us.

Oh my that was so heartbreaking to see that poor little guy deceased. I know that it is the cycle of life but still so sad. I can’t imagine however, a more beautiful place to to pass on. He is so magnificent

Really special ducks and we're lucky to have so many along the RI coast in winter. Sad to find, but Kim wanted to make the most of the opportunity
