These videos always fill me with joy. I'm so happy to see the folks that help you out. If I was 40 years younger and tall and strapping like your helpers, I would love to work happily at your side. Unfortunately, I'm older and can just keep up with what I have. None the less, thank you for these videos! You've encouraged and emboldened me. I just hacked away at some of my bonsai that I was just not happy with. I see the benefit of being "bold". A lesson learned. In bonsai and in life. Thank you!
Thank you so much Peter. Your videos have given me the courage to take my bonsai skills to the next level. Watching you do what you sometimes call “boring” work is invaluable to a novice like me. So please keep the videos coming.
I love watching Peter prune. It reminds me of John McEnroe when he smashed all the roses next to the court When he sat down again McEnroe noticed he left one standing and calmly got out of his chair and destroyed the last standing rose with his racquet. Great Video Herrons & Peter.
One of the things I like about your trees is they have a "wild" appearance. The "perfect" trees I have seen from other artists are sublime as well. Perhaps the character of the artist is reflected in their work.
Loved! Always learn something from you sir. I am in Brazil and I do have a ficus benjamina. It is so vigorous that I trim almost every month. But I may say that it started to grow much better when I changed the soil mix to a more "bonsai type" of soil. I mixed perlite, sphagnum peat moss and burned rice bark. Thanks for your effort on making these videos and sharing your knowledge and wisdom, not only bonsai expertise.
Those large ficuses Look awesome! The Information at ~14:00 about scratching the tree to make it bud back was also very valuable, will try that on my ficus! ☺️🌿
Going outside in the night right now to find my very neglected ficus (yes, I am a scaredy cat pruner) so I can work out in the daylight what it needs. It's autumn here in Australia, so probably not pruning time but after this great video, I have no excuse when pruning time comes around. Still wish I was fifty years younger and could beg you for a job, Peter. I wish to see the shapes you see in each unique tree, to be bold and courageous with pruners and to have a couple of big strong lads to help move things around. Enjoying these videos very much while in lockdown. Stay well from Nana Kaye in Australia.
Whenever I feel down, which is a lot because I got laid off due to the virus. So...I watch one of your videos and it is tranquilizing. Your passion for plants and Bonsai is wonderful. I have started several Bonsai's from scratch. Would you recommend buying an established Bonsai, so I can enjoy it instead of waiting 10 years?
I had 6ºc last winter here in tropical Aus, that lasted for several weeks and my fig trees, both as bonsai and in the yard had to go through that and they were none the worse for it.
Thank you for these massive educational tips i just got myself Ficus and Chinese elm (12 and 6 years respectively) for indoors these are my first old bonsai :) Ive got some material (elm) from forest near me it landed outside and i hope it will get some growth in spring outside. Wishing all the best!
42:00 watching Peter hack away the mud soil, suddenly the image of Wolverine came to mind. Love to watch this man in action, he spares no energy getting things done!
I have different variety of ficuses in my garden here in the Philippines. I have also different tropical bonsai trees here like kamuning, sampaloc, calyos, bouganville, money tree, bignay, and more.
Fertilizer... And, make sure the next set of buds are already showing before you cut the tip of the branch off. Fertilizer is important and people usually miss it.
Please could you make a video on starting and caring for a small/new ficus bonsai. I have a small one with just 2 branches and big leaves and I know I need to do something with it but just don't know where to start! It would be very helpful! Do you remove leaves or prune before winter or spring?
Such an interesting work on Ficus - my most favorite plant species especially in the context of bonsai-making! Many thanks for the presentation! By the way, I am from and in Nepal.
Good afternoon! Im repotting my Ficus today. Should iput it back into the sun immediately as usual or ease it back into the sun little by little to avoid shocking it. Also should I go ahead and put fertilizer on it or wait a couple months; what's best? The temperature here is Day: 23-30°C, Night: 13-17°C daily from this point on. Thanks for all of the help and guidance.
I have three ficus retusa bonsai trees at home. They are growing strong and I had them for about 3-4 years now. None of them ever lost their leaves (apart from the odd few) like the ones in this video. It could have something to do with the temperature I guess...
Amazing videos. I was meant to be at your nursery having my day lesson but with the lockdown it hasn't happened. Thanks for makes all the latest videos, I havnt missed all your amazing trees in spring. Fingers crossed I will get to vist this year. It would be great if you could make a video like this to show a large Japanese maple pre bonsia.
l like ponsai too much .and i am intresting your videos i like yo ask you about my tree it is loosing leaves quickly ... i want to ask what is the best way to save it ..
A question about the 2nd tree in this video. On one side, I think the front there were two branches that were very close together, one seemed to cross the other, but you did not eliminate either branch. Did you have a reason for leaving both of them, which I missed? I always enjoy watching you trim trees at repotting sessions. You always seem to know exactly where and what to cut. Thank you for sharing your insights and your techniques.
How do people find Bonsai Succulents, I have about 3 and in my opinion they look just as good as the classical ones with their thick trunks, just with the difference that they take about 1/10 of the time to grow.
Thanks Peter for another great video. Question: I've read that you need to leave at least one leaf on a Ficus Benjamina branch or you will get dieback. Your thoughts / experience?
Hello, I have a quick question. I'm relatively new to all of this so I was just wondering what soil I should use for my medium-sized Ficus Bonsi. I live in Northern America, so I don't know if the products that you are using are sold out here. Any suggestions? Anything would be helpful!
Just a stupid question (from someone who knows nothing about bonsais), why don’t you soak the roots in water to remove the hard mud/clay rather than removing it the way you do which also removed a lot of root materials in the process?
I'm curious about what temperature you keep your Zen Room where you over winter the large Ficus trees? Thanks! Will try that scratching idea on my Ficus to see if it buds out lower on the trunk.
In my humble opinion, it has to be lower than ideal. My ficuses, benjamina and retusa do not shed leaves but rather push growth all year never going below 70 fahrenheit and living in a South facing window with some supplemental uv lighting. I'm in Canada. But clearly his are doing spectacular, so maybe I'm babying them more than necessary
Mr. Chan, thank you for your video, very informative and useful. Could you make a video about wiring? Especially how long the wire should be left on the different types of trees (deciduous and coniferous), the best time for wiring, when the wire should be take off. Thank you and best wishes.
Good day Peter! I’ve just watched this video - and I have a few questions for you. I live in Dubai, the weather is quite the opposite of your temperate weather in the UK. I bought a ficus in a hemispherical training plastic pot in Feb 2020 (ideal weather - 25-28 C during the day and 16-17 C at night). I placed it outdoors in bright shade and it did beautifully until end May. Beautiful, lush growth with new leaves every day. With the onset of summer, it started dropping leaves at an alarming rate. Towards the end of June (when the temp was touching 45 C), I moved it indoors (still 26-27 C) and cut down on watering. It continued dropping leaves quite vigorously until about 2 weeks ago. With the autumnal equinox the days are shorter and temperatures have now dropped to the high 30s. Leaf drop is down. Can you suggest a good time for me to do a hard prune and repot before moving it outdoors again? With the sun lower in the sky, my Eastern/Southern facing balcony gets nearly 4-6 hours of direct sun and will continue doing so until late Dec/early Jan. Also, can I répot into a similar sized hemispherical fibre clay pot? Thanks for your help!

Just enjoy what you do. Nothing else matters.
I am 55 and dont think I could keep up with Peter.
@@edie944 You are a youngster. I hope you know how old I am ?
Nice to see the Crocs in action!
hi nigel
@@Bw40099 Hello Ben!
Nice to see 2 of my favourite bonsai youtubers in one place! Looking forward to your future videoe
Hei nigel. Are you thinking the same as me. Hmm that ficus throw leaves beacuse is to dry and in bad soil.
Thank you so much Peter. Your videos have given me the courage to take my bonsai skills to the next level. Watching you do what you sometimes call “boring” work is invaluable to a novice like me. So please keep the videos coming.

When was that and at what tournament? I would have love to see that.
Master Chan is so comfortable with himself and so we become with ourselves. Thanks to Bonsai culture!
One of the things I like about your trees is they have a "wild" appearance. The "perfect" trees I have seen from other artists are sublime as well. Perhaps the character of the artist is reflected in their work.
Of course it is an art form.
Thank you so much for making this series of videos for the appartment dweller!
I really want to support bonsai growing in my area thanks to this channel. Thank you, Mr. Chen!
I have 30-40 year old ficus here in India. Multiple varieties. Yes the roots grow like hell.
Do you sell any that can be shipped to the united states? I would possibly be interested
Edith Murphy me too I’ll take 8
Are you selling any? I’m right here in India
How big can they get?
@@ikillprettythingz7947 very big

Would this work on other trees like Chinese elms?
Do you think arial roots can produce the same way ?
Oh! So glad to see a program about ficus. Thank you!!!!
Is there an update to these ficus? I’m so interested to see how they have grown!
I wish I was under quarintine with Herons and Peter!!!!
Your coworker ist top notch!:) thanks a lot!

They are all healthy n strong, beautiful Ficus Trees indeed Peter. Can't wait for the next one, stay safe always to all...cheers.
The tray of cuttings looks like a miniature forest. Nice.
Sweet smile from 'helper' to camera....have way thru' this informative video.
I love ficus trees . I have one that is 20 years old now that we can mother because it has made so many trees . Thanks Peter for the video 🙏
You have given me the confident to prune my bonsai. You are a good teacher, I think I did a good job. Now I need to repot it. Thank you!
These trees are some that helped inspire me to learn more about Bonsai.. thank you 🙏..
It's always nice to see a real master at work. Thank you for the lesson sir.

in vietnam, ficus is among favorite bonsai trees which people love to collect and trade
Greetings from India. Happy to know that soon you are going to demo tropical bonsais and that to from a temperate country. Congratulations.
Peter the second tree ..as you have it sitting... it resembles a lion with you just cutting the mane!! I love it!!!
i thought a deer with branches as antlers
Rewatching and I just love hearing of India and about the trees there.
The last tree in your zen room at 34min, the trunk is massive!!! What a beautiful tree!! 40min went by so fast watching this amazing video!

Herons Bonsai could you please do a follow up on some bonsais you trim now, in about 6 month?
So´we can see the growth

Yes we are all safe - hope you are too. Where do you live?
That is a sexy pot. That's a nice tree too. Special ordered a pot for a nice ficus bonsai I have.

Your videos are great alway learn something watching you thank you so much ,stay safe Pete hopefully this will be over soon.
Do the plants have any type of shocks period when they are moving from clay soils to your good soil?
No - they usually respond better
I love to see how this tree is downing a year or so after this video was made.

When I do pruning, I don't get many branches as shown in this. Only 1 or 2 branches come.

Do the root cuts need to be sealed in case of greater cuts, or is the sap sufficient there as well?
Looking for that Jade tree prune?
Is there a link for it?
Great videos.
Please make a video on how to grow ficus from cutting and also from seedlings.
Can i use 100% akadama for ficus ?

Look at all that Fn' mud. I like it.
I like your channel herons sir😘😘😘😍😍👍👍🤗🤗
16:00 Looks like it's never been watered.
Wouldn't the soil removal work better if you soaked it in water first?
Gorgeous trees.
They are beautiful
Big size and beautiful
Prior, you mentioned not to work on roots and branches at the same time. Can you repot and trim branches, in general, or is that by variety?
Why did you reduce the pot by so much are you not afraid of it being root bound ?
Mi ficus plant loosing a lots leaves including green ones and new ones is this ok ?
Beautiful trees
Thanks, great video.
How do people find Bonsai Succulents, I have about 3 and in my opinion they look just as good as the classical ones with their thick trunks, just with the difference that they take about 1/10 of the time to grow.
Crassula and Portulaca make for nice "trees" and are good for indoor bonsai. Which kinds do you have ?
love portulacaria
This video is very useful for me.
Thanks Peter for another great video. Question: I've read that you need to leave at least one leaf on a Ficus Benjamina branch or you will get dieback. Your thoughts / experience?
No - dont have to - they are so vigorous
I have 3 ficus bonsai....and they never lose their leaves. ? I keep them fairly moist.
Peter is there a reason why you don't
wash the roots with a water hose ?
Do we know why it is that when we take cuttings from a tree the grow to full tree ?
Bagus sekali bonsainya
I'm in America so every time I hear someone say "hosepipe" I think "put him in the scuppers with the hosepipe on him early in the morning"!
Hello,
I have a quick question. I'm relatively new to all of this so I was just wondering what soil I should use for my medium-sized Ficus Bonsi. I live in Northern America, so I don't know if the products that you are using are sold out here. Any suggestions? Anything would be helpful!
Maybe a little late but I use Bonsai soil from Florentus and it makes my tree grow well! I'm in Europe, for what it's worth.
Just a stupid question (from someone who knows nothing about bonsais), why don’t you soak the roots in water to remove the hard mud/clay rather than removing it the way you do which also removed a lot of root materials in the process?
How to achieve such a barrel thickness? Is this some special kind of ficus? Which can grow to this size?
After seeing this I had created nodes in my ficus now I can see more new shoots coming out from nude branches
Thanks sharing your video sir..
Should you not worry about nodes?
Is it possible to repot my ficus to a bigger pot without doing anything to the roots? Just put it to a bigger pot and fill the free space with soil?
I'm curious about what temperature you keep your Zen Room where you over winter the large Ficus trees? Thanks! Will try that scratching idea on my Ficus to see if it buds out lower on the trunk.
The room is between 7 - 18 C at all times
In my humble opinion, it has to be lower than ideal. My ficuses, benjamina and retusa do not shed leaves but rather push growth all year never going below 70 fahrenheit and living in a South facing window with some supplemental uv lighting. I'm in Canada. But clearly his are doing spectacular, so maybe I'm babying them more than necessary
Can you make a video showing the difference between bonsai soil and bonsai fertilizer on a bonsai tree.
Why are they moving them outside the night before?
Mr. Chan, thank you for your video, very informative and useful. Could you make a video about wiring? Especially how long the wire should be left on the different types of trees (deciduous and coniferous), the best time for wiring, when the wire should be take off. Thank you and best wishes.
