Something to note about Hit and Miss engines. 999 out of 1,000 of them (not literally) ran from the time that they were set up until they were decommissioned. 24/7, 365. Mechanical failures on them were exceedingly rare because they were designed to run that long.

8:07 Sometimes there would be a clutch up on the ceiling by the main shaft, pulling a chain would disengage the belt. Other times, the machine's driven pulley would have an idler pulley next to it, and you would just slip the belt over to the idler to disengage it. Otherwise, you just minded where your fingers were.

To answer the question no they did not turn the engines off while working. If you were injured well insurance get out of here operator error.

There's an idler wheel to move the belt to. That's the on off switch on machines like theese.
