FrSky X20 EthOS DLG Template Guide

- EthOS promises to deliver the flexibility of OpenTX in an interface that is easier to learn and use. The FrSky Tandem X20 and X20S radios are the first radios dedicated to run EthOS, and so far, I'm quite happy with the radio and software.
I've put together a basic DLG template, and in this video, I will walk you through my template so that you can use, share, and build upon it to suit your needs.

What do you guys think of EthOS?
No reason to consider EthOS currently. Will stick with OpenTX until I have an incentive to move on. Will take some time until I consider buying Frsky again.
@@gurravi I think there isn’t much reason for someone who is already very familiar with OTX to go with EthOS at the moment.
I've got the X20S but didn't have time to use it yet. The template comes really handy and will sure save time. Big thnx

These videos are extremely helpful. I appreciate them so much, I just ordered an E-Medina from Armsoar. I could have purchased a variety of 2m RES gliders from other vendors, but really wanted to say "Thanks" to Thomas for these videos. My gosh, I have probably viewed 20+ hours of them learning the ropes of DLG.

Just converted 2 models from OTX to ETHOS on my new X20. I delayed for a year before buying the X20 as I am very happy with OTX.
The conclusion is ETHOS is easy to use and has the same under lying structure as OTX. I'd recommend anyone thinking about it to go ahead and invest in an X20. Its excellent.

I 100% agree, and pretty much just recommend people to go with EthOS radios vs OTX radios now, unless there is something specific they need. For example, the X-Lite Pro running OTX for a very small-sized radio.
Thanks for the video and the files. I would like to make one nitpick comment about the way you say "Var". If I am not mistaken, it is short for Variable, and when us programmers shorten it to Var, we pronounce it as a word, and it's said like bar, but with a vee sound in the front. 😁

We'll probably do a F5J template in the future, but not sure when yet.

Just installed the template on my X20 looks good, hope to fly my DLG later today. My suggestion is make a version for us left hand throwers...still trying to figure out how to get everything on the other button! LOL
You'll need to go into the logic switches and change the launch button to the right button.
Hello! How did you do that? I tried and did not get it.
@@levmanou9874 as Mr. Lee mentioned go to the Logic Switches and designate the right button as your launch. LSW1 Zoom SW Sticky SJ^/LSW3 (^= up arrow) this got me at first. If you push the SJ button to designate it will be SJ wrong. I put timer and altitude reset on SI button(left back button) I hope this helps.
Love your videos, best collectively on RUclips. How did you get the Zoom mode to activate/deactivate via the elevator stick?! I've been playing with it for days, going all the way to making special functions or logic switches. Can't find anything that would communicate.
Great video. Have converted to X20 and & downloaded your template. All works well, but I’m struggling to adjust the aileron travel. Adjusting weights does not seem to work. Would much appreciate your advice.

Hey brother you skip over how to actually install and activate the template on the radio. So at the moment it is completely useless to me. If you can update with a video or post something here much appreciated.

Hey. Super video explaining the settings. I received a new X20 Tandem radio. I wanted to upload but I don't know how to do it. There is a video on how to open templates on the radio?
Thomas thanks so much for your videos. Love your program, very nice, was trying to program one myself and this is so much better. One issue I had and it might be something I've done, but movement of the flaperons in speed mode is smooth. In cruise and thermal mode the flaperon going up moves up first to the speed camber setting before the one going down moves. Is that normal, any setting I should change?
Reviving the comments. Finally started playing with the x20s. Not as intuitive as I thought, coming from A9 as some terms aren’t familiar. It’s pretty simple with 4 ch but kind of a pain with 6 ch Dlg using the GR6 rx.
I’d like to see these settings in action on a Dlg while you make changes.
RF is on as you make changes, so you should be able to see how it affects the plane while adjusting settings.
@@ArmSoar oh what I meant was- it would be cool if you made a tranny programming video with the plane in view as you’re making changes. Hahahhhaha sorry, man. I’m just being lazy and needy! Lol
Up for brakes for the win! :). It looks like FrSky is concentrating on the LUA scripting lately according to the RC groups page. That was really holding me back from buying one as I need my f3k training apps.
Up is the best!! I’m so excited for Lua on EthOS… hopefully once it’s ready we will see F3K and F5J training apps available quickly :)
Hi Thomas, re-watching this fresh while programming an F5J. Wondering if the 'Var" mix area has changed as it doesn't look same on Mine? Can you elaborate on the Var mixes you made to adjust rates per flight mode? RTThank you.
Great video! Thank you for sharing. I'm getting back into DLG after being away for several years and there seem to be more transmitter protocols now. Will this transmitter work with Spektrum receivers? I have a Spektrum AR 6255's I have been using.
You're very welcome, and welcome back to the DLG fold! No, it will only with with the FrSky ACCST v2, ACCESS, and new Tandem protocols. If you want to use a Spektrum DSMX receiver, the best bet is to go for a Spektrum radio like the NX8, or, you can also use a radio with MPM (Multi-Protocol-Module) like the RadioMaster radios.

Thanks for this informative video. You convinienced me to buy this radio. One of the reason is also TX16S that I am currently using is constantly alarming low signal, critical signal and telemetry lost…(when plane is 150m far from me)…I think this is not normal right? No mather if Rx antennas are in glass fibre or wood fuselage.
You'll enjoy the X20! That said, 150m w/ the TX16S is not normal. Have you tried other receivers with it?
I tried with 4 (2 different models) frsky and two radiomaster receivers…all are the same.
Hi Thomas, thank you for this video. helpful on concepts. I download the template file and copied it to my X18S NAND /models folder. Somehow that corrupted the file system. I deleted the file, renamed the template file to 7 character filename. When I try to select it as the model to load, Ethos shows "invalid Data" would never load the template settings. I used Ethos Suite to reset the X18s to factory default. Any ideas on what maybe the cause? My Tx Ethos is now at version 1.5.4, Ethos suite shows all up to date.
Unfortunately, I think there is a major change between 1.4 and 1.5 that made reading our templates an issue :(
Thank you for responding. The issue is the template is unusable under current Ethos 1.5.4. Can your team upgrade a 1.4 Ethos Tx with your template on it to ver 1.5 to see if Ethos suite will upgrade the Template / model to 1.5 status and functional. If successful, please upload the updated template here. If not, perhaps escalation to the fine team at FrSky can fix this incompatibility (no workaround) within their own software. I like the logic and layout of your template. There is another DLG template out there that will work with 1.5. However, its logic and layout is like OTX, hard to manage and maintain over time. Hope your team can perform the upgrade test validation to get us going. Again, many thanks.
Great video.. looking at the x20 and just starting out with DLGs.. any recommendations on receivers for use with X20 and 20s in a dlg like an NXT?

Yup! It will load and work but requires a few switches to be moved around in the program.

After watching the video, I wanted to buy the twin x lite. I like something small and light. A better choice than the x20s?
I think the Twin X Lite is better for DLGs than the X20S.

Unfortunately not, one of the recent updates broke our templates and we just don’t have the manpower to go through all the templates to update right now. However, I believe Mike Shellim has good templates that a lot of DLG pilots are using/enjoying.
Isn't this too heavy for DLG? I want to buy new transmitter and I look for tandem 18s or twin 14s. Not surw what to pick
I do prefer the lighter radios for DLG. You can’t go wrong with the 18s or 14s, although i prefer the screen on the top, so I am using the 18s.

Great video, love your program but on thing I found is if your activate launch and the flaps are down it brings the flaps up, however the elevator compensation stays down. I unfortunately through my DLG into the ground. Maybe you can make that correction if you haven’t already.

This addresses basically all the issues I had with my QX7. Oh well, I’ve been happy with the spektrum gear. Not a fan, however, of how some of the most useful (software addressable) features are essentially behind a paywall of $1400 for the iX20
OpenTX definitely shook up the business model of limiting software features behind paywalls, but unfortunately it's not likely to be adopted by other makers.
I've had great success with the Spektrum gear though, the link has been very, very impressive. Quality is good, and customer service from HH is superb. That AR410 receiver is the bomb 💪
@@ArmSoar True, but I still want to see a baro sensor to get real time launch heights, so I'm using the 6 ch for now. Still very small.
Hi Thomas, I copied the Amber sound files and dropped them in the Audio folder on Ethos however the files still wont play on the switches. Can you do a video to show how you got them to work please.
Hi Thomas. Is the template still working for you when updating to 1.1.1? The model has dissappeared from my radio and I can't seem to load it. To load are you simply copying it to the models folder?
I didn't find it on my radio. But then i updated my bootloader, newest firmware (Mid May 2022), renamed the bin name to model01.bin and then it was found and i could clone it. So it definitly works on X20 Mid May 2022

Any idea why people on the RC Groups - Radio forum are reporting that their transmitters are crashing after loading your template?
So far there were 3 that I know of, one was solved after going to 1.0.11 (unsure which RC, but i think it was RC2), and another seems to be working now. I’m not sure why that’s happening because I’ve tried it on two radios and they both work, and there’s at least ~20 others using it right now based on the emails we’ve been answering. Probably much more based in the amount of downloads.

In development? Not for me thanks till they have that finished and running properly. May consider it then. Tx looks rather standard, I would rather be trying the DJI FPV Joystick approach thanks...IMO Laurie
It would be interesting to see how the DJI joystick can be adapted for sailplanes!

It'll eventually come, but a lot of different companies are having trouble sourcing the displays right now, lot's of delayed products this year from several big FPV brands.
