Greetings from Scotland! Nobody ever expects this effect from a young girl! 18yo here and already earthshattering! Diana is 19yo currently but I've been following her since she was around 13yo. Diana is a natural Dramatic Contralto so the lower registers are her comfort zone but she now has a 4 octave range and it's increasing. She also naturally sings with polyphonic overtones so it sounds like many voices at the same time!
Diana's birthmother had multiple miscarriages but when Diana came along, she seemed to hate her. She verbally and physically abused her, trying to drown her and belittle her. It all culminated when (at 3yo) she dragged her to a bus stop with a broken collarbone and abandoned her, saying "Survive if you can" A passing relative took her in but because she cried constantly (naturally with a broken collarbone) she took her to the authorities who removed Diana from her birthmothers care and placed her in an orphanage. For almost 2 years Diana never gave up hope and she knew that she was meant for something better. (This story is in her Wikipedia entry) Finally her new mother (Irina Ponik, who worked as a masseuse there occasionally) Signed her adoption papers and took her home. She vowed to pay Irina back for her kindness. Irina had a real struggle because Diana had obviously been badly affected by the experiences and at 5yo, she had a very bad stammer. It was recommended that she be taken for singing lessons to help this and immediately it was recognised that Diana had perfect pitch and an excellent ear for music and songs. 1 year later, at 6yo, Diana was performing solo on stage!
This young unique phenomenon sang everywhere and anywhere she could, working constantly to earn money for the family who rescued her. At 13yo she held her 1st solo concert and one of the songs she sang was in a very rare Sephardic Jewish/Spanish dialect, a song called "Me Voy" (I'm leaving) with a power and emotional commitment that staggers belief! ruclips.net/video/-9_c5fPrqno/видео.html
She was already winning every contest in Russia and other countries that she could get to. Then at 14yo Diana took part in an amazing Russian project "You're Super!" for abandoned/disadvantaged children (because Diana spent time in an orphanage) The 1st song she performed shocked the judges and audience so much, it went viral. Sorry for the length of this post but there is so much information to give. This performance took place when Diana Ankudinova was 18 years old during a new vocal competition called the ShowMaskGoOn, on September 25, 2021. This was a new vocal competition and was televised over nine weeks, with one episode per week. She competed against other professional singers and they were competing against each other. Based on their individual performance they awarded judging points to each other. When not competing, Diana was also a member of this judging panel.
Every week for 9 weeks, each singer took the stage and performed a different song over each of the nine weeks. Each contestant had to sing a different song from a different genre using different styles. The ShowMaskGoOn! concluded on November 20, 2021.
Diana was the first to perform with her cover of Elvis Presley’s classic, “Can’t Help Falling In Love”. This performance demonstrated that Diana Ankudinova has what many vocal professionals believe is a true contralto voice type, and for those in your audience that may not know, a contralto voice is the lowest kind of female voice, and a true contralto voice is very, very rare.
First, a very common question was asked about Diana's vocal range, because vocal range helps in defining a female singer's voice type. In 2017, her vocal range was measured from a low of D3 to a high of A5. In September 2021, 5 years later her functional range was again measured during this performance and it measured from a low of C3 to a high of B♭5, giving Diana almost a 3-octave range. But it's not about how low she can go, it's the exceptional quality of her tone in her lower register. It's in her timbre, the roundness, fullness, and depth of her voice, along with her ability to create and access an enormous amount of resonance that helps to further define Diana as a "dramatic contralto", the deepest, darkest, and most powerful contralto voice type and is the rarest of the rare contralto voice types that are on full display here.
So the question becomes, how does she do it? How can a young female singer achieve such low, rich, deep, resonant, and profound sounds? Without actually being able to scope her vocal tract while she is producing those low notes to see what is actually happening, the general conciseness of many vocal professionals is simply attributing Diana’s unique ability to her winning the genetic lottery, meaning Diana was just born with unique vocal anatomy. Diana’s vocal folds, (vocal cords), appear to be longer and thicker. Her larynx also appears to be larger, her oral cavity is larger, and her pharynx appears to be longer than other female singers. It’s this unique vocal anatomy that gives Diana Ankudinova the ability to produce those low, deep, rich, full sounds that along with her unique tone quality and her ability to access an enormous reservoir of resonance make her stand out, but without actually scoping her vocal track, there is no way to be 100% sure.
Diana is also a true polyphonic singer, a rare accomplishment for someone so young. A singer who masters this vocal technique can create one, and sometimes two, different tones at the same time which add to the harmonic overtones and undertones that can make it sound like a synthesizer was added to her voice, or there is more than one voice singing. This polyphonic ability is why some people mistakenly believe Diana Ankudinova uses electronic voice manipulation or pitch correction software to alter or adjust her sound. Others believe another person is singing in the background off-stage, or she is lip-syncing over previously recorded vocal tracks. There is nothing artificial nor is any manipulation going on at all with Diana's voice. Neither is anyone else singing with her that is off stage nor is she lip-syncing to a recorded vocal track. The other voices you are hearing are just vocal backing tracks used to fill in and round out the performance along with the backing track for the musical score. Diana Ankudinova and only Diana Ankudinova is singing “Can't Help Falling In Love”.
To conclude, during Diana’s performance, the judge on the top row who stands during the performance is a well-known Russian opera tenor, Yusif Eyvazov from Azerbaijan who was invited to be a special guest judge for this inaugural vocal competition. Yusif Eyvazov is also married to world-famous opera soprano Anna Netrebko. At the end of Diana Ankudinova’s performance, she receives a standing ovation from her fellow competitors and a fellow judge, the blond woman dressed in red, standing in the center row is Julia Parshuta, who is a well-known contemporary Russian singer. Julia Parshuta looks totally shocked at the end of Diana's performance and puts both hands on top of her head with a look of total surprise and bewilderment. Julia, along with the other judges now realize they all have to compete against Diana, and everyone now knows she is a generational talent. Finally, this 9-week competition ended with Diana winning.

At the age of three in the middle of Russia's far northern Winter she was abandoned, injured, at a bus stop where she was rescued and sent to an orphanage. At the age of 5 she was still traumatized and unable to speak properly. A massage therapist who visited the orphanage trying to help kids, was the first to recognize something special in this little girl, and eventually adopted her. Diana was sent for singing lessons because it was thought that this might help her learn to speak without impediment.
Only two years later she started singing in local theater, and in street plays and performances. And soon after was entered in a Russian TV music competition for disadvantaged children. By the age of 10 she was winning local competitions, singing on live TV shows, and her songs started showing up on RUclips. Two months ago, at the age of 18, her first performance during a new Russian television competition with several other renowned performers, has gone viral and has garnered hundreds of RUclips 'reaction' videos, and millions of viewers.
Her first song at the competition, an entirely new take on Elvis Presley's 'Can't Help Falling in Love with You' has been called mesmerizing, transcendental and other-worldly...it highlights her uniquely deep voice, and effortless range from low to high, along with her trademark dramatic and passionate interpretation.
