      Question, would there be any difference in calculation for my intact dog?

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  2 месяца назад

      TECHNICALLY, for calorie calculation you need to multiple the RER by 1.4 for intact males, but I find they still get obese so I still don't use the multiplier. The calorie calculation is the only thing that changes, all the nutrient parameters stay the same regardless if they are fixed or not.

      I’ll try and do some supplements but it’s hard to get any data from them to actually review the product. There is no law that makes supplements follow any testing or lable claims so in general I don’t recommend any but a short list

    Another great video! The setting is totally fine! I was wondering if you could explain to me the kcals the 2 kcal number for example with this food says 3700 then 454. I noticed the first number is sometimes even lower but the second can be higher with other formulas and that confuses me. Which kcal number do I look at if for example I have a dog that needs to lose weight? Thanks Dr. Rea ❤

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  2 месяца назад +2

      The 3700 is per kilogram and the 454 is per cup. Different units of measurement. Not sure if that was what you were asking. You need the kcal/cup to calculate your calories. The kcal/kg is the energy density.

    Im stressing so much about dog food ! Currently feeding pro plan sensitive stomach. Never had an issue but the recent dog food scare has me going insane so we tried the farmers dog as a topper for optimplus dog food as the base and one of my dogs got pancreatitis, so back to the oro plan for now but im still uncomfortable with it.

      @AnimalDocRea  2 месяца назад

      I’m sorry you are stressed. If it’s any consolation, I see 2k patients a year. Many feed purina, including lots of my staff. I have seen no illnesses. I think it’s all fear bating to get views and make news. If I was your vet, I’d have no concerns with you staying with your purina if your pet was doing well. But that’s a question for your personal vet. I’ve seen no actual evidence of any health issues though and we are months into this “scare”

    Dr. Rea, I have a question if I may? I’m giving my one cat Hills Prescription Diet c/d Multicare Stress Urinary Care and my other cats have decided to eat it. Is that okay? I just want to make sure they’re alright if they sneak food from his dish every now and then. Thank you kindly for your time.

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  2 месяца назад

      I love cd multi care for all cats. I think it goes so far from stopping urinary issues, both behavioral and medical. I think it’s great they all love it and it should be fine for everyone. But double check with your vet, I’m sure that question would be a simple over the phone answer and your vet may be just as happy as me to hear it so don’t spare them the good news on my account.

      @AnimalDocRea  2 месяца назад +2

      If your vet says they are fine I’d have to defer to them since they are personally aquatinted with you. In general treats are just occasional special bonuses so they really aren’t going to affect overall nutrition. Just like me when I have a Twix bar on occasion 🤪

    Hello. I hope I am ok asking again. And off topic. I am staying with cooked meat/fish. However Can you speculate as to why Pottenger's cats flourished on the raw food? From what I understand from going through the book, his research is considered to be a major contribution to cat nutrition.

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  2 месяца назад

      Pottenger’s “study” is NOT considered a major contributor to cat nutrition by the veterinary scientific community. His findings are largely considered not valid for many reasons that are readily apparent to those trained to evaluate scientific literature. For instance we know almost no details of the diets, the way the cats were housed, and whether or not there were any confounding variables such as the lines of cats, the nutritional adequacy of each diet. In reality there have been no real studies that have shown any benefit of long term feeding raw vs commercial diets and in the absence of any real substantial benefit, the risks out way any perceived benefits.
      Short answer, no one knows why pottenger perceived his cats did better on raw and the research was so poor, no one could even try to reproduce it to validate the “findings”
      Evidence based vets need actual data, and there is no data. So no, it’s not considered a major contributor to cat nutrition.

    I understand that recently AAFCO updated labeling requirements for dog food and that now, protein, calcium, phosphorus, etc. are shown as “guaranteed analysis” and “min” or “max” for each nutrient. For example, Purina One True Instinct Turkey and Venison lists crude protein (min) as 30%. Ca (min) is 1.0%. P (min) is 0.8%. Because these are minimums, does AAFCO not regulate a maximum? So, could Purina (or any brand) indicate Ca (min) of 1.0% and actual level is 1.5% (which is above the min of 1.0)? I’m thoroughly confused with these changes, especially since it’s not good to have too much or too little of a nutrient.

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  2 месяца назад +2

      These aren’t changes, this is how it’s been for years, if not decades. That’s exactly why we don’t use AAfCO on this channel. They only care about malnutrition, (minimums) and protecting consumers from deficiencies. Most nutrients don’t even have a maximum acceptable level
      Listed by AAFCO. Also of note, as discussed In the video, we don’t use the garunteed analysis because this isn’t on a dry matter basis. You need to be using the typical analysis on a dry matter basis to have any data of value.

I was actually trying to post it on the Purina one vs pro plan video, but I was having troubles doing so. So, I randomly picked this video. I was hoping to get actual analysis numbers from Purina, but not having very good luck getting a response from them. I find your videos very helpful!
