A lot of research and looking up Mosasaur bones. Being familiar with the pattern of the cell structure, and familiar with the weight of a fossilized piece vs a modern piece of bone. The mineralization on Mosasaur bone causes a unique pattern, so it's easy to differentiate the Mosasaur from let's say fish bone for example.
