Classic Viewer Mail segment in addition to Stevie Nicks asking the musical question "I Can't Wait?" I remember watching this one in college. Thanks Donz!
I can imagine being this funny off the cuff for 10 minutes once in my life-Dave did it night after night for decades. 😅 Perfect Late Night clip. Thanks Don.
Don Giller, prince among men. Thanks for uploading these! One of my favorite "Viewer Mail" segments. The megaphone helmet Dave has on... brilliant! I had forgotten the post-apocalyptic bit was in this one too. Blorgo, "The only guest we've ever had that can see 2,000 angstroms into the ultra-violet". Dave was so far ahead of anything else on TV back then. Also, Stevie Nicks is awful. Or at least she was in the 80's. I had a friend who worked at a Sunset Strip hotel frequented by rocks stars and he told me some interesting, unpleasant stuff about her. And that Ozzy Osbourne used to drink pitchers of Margaritas. EDIT: I just noticed a misspelling on the plaque- “Febuary”. Probably too late to write Dave a letter pointing this out.
As I was watching this segment I let out an audible gasp as Grant Tinker came out with the plaque. I went down to my basement and retrieved this: photos.app.goo.gl/Q88E7LsEMKSVo86W2 Given to me by the NBC 6th floor prop master-- I want to say his name was Bill Tull. Don-- thanks for uploading all of these amazing, encyclopedic clips.
I'm binge-watching these videos. Thanks for posting them Don. I had a friend in high school who videotaped Letterman every single in the 80's (no idea when or if he stopped at some point) and am kind of wondering if you did the same. Again, thanks. This is great to watch.
Aww.. Poor Dave was sicky. He's a trooper though. He must have been kinda out of it on Comtrex and such that night because he forgot to make sure the stylists properly coiffed his fabulous hair peninsula as stealthily as usual. We still love him to death regardless.
While "peninsula" is probably the more correct geographical term for Dave's hair, he usually referred to it as an "isthmus" cause it sounded funnier :)
you responded to me, don: hal gurney's network time killers. on one more than one night he put stevie nick's clevage moments from bob costas' friday night videos as entertainment. oh well
Mary Gorry When you have the time, please email me. I’d love to know more about him, other than he passed away in ‘06. (My email in in the “About” page of my channel.)
1. Herb Bailey, Terre Haute: still alive There's a Herbert John "Herb" Bailey, from Wapeillo, Iowa, who died. 2. David Turner, Columbus Ohio: died in 2017 at 47. Would have been 16 in 1986 3. Rob Keith, Kingston, Ontario: died 4. Benson Willis, Lake City, Florida: evidently still alive There's a Willis Benson, from Spokane, Washington, who died. There's a Mary Willis, from Lake City, who died. Mentioned in her family was still-alive Benson Willis III 5. Tom Halbrook, Palmer, Massachusetts; evidently still alive There's a Thomas Halbrook, from Pearland, Texas, who died. So of the five letter writers: only two appear to have passed away.
As Dave would say, "It's a joke, it's only a joke". But nice to hear from the Donz. I can't believe you would actually Google these people. I actually did Google Rob Keith and according to his Linkedin profile it would appear that he is alive and well in Calgary, Alberta. So maybe only one is no longer with us.
Great - so here's a challenge - I remember a joke that Dave told in his monologue that went something like this: "Researchers at Columbia University have been studying the life of Adolf Hitler and have determined that he was not in fact a dictator, just a really bossy guy" Any idea where that joke could be found?

That's fantastic. Thanks for putting it up! (Sorry for the two-month delay; I just saw your comment only now.)
I think I should probably donate the plaque to Ball State (or you). Feels wasted in my basement.
I'll take it! :)
Where is your address, Don? you can email my name @ gmail.
Just emailed you. Let me know if you got it or not. As I wrote in there, let me pay for postage. And thank you!
No show ever had the feel of Letterman (especially The Late Nite days) and no show ever will.
2,000 Angstroms into the Ultraviolet. Is such a perfect sentence
That Stevie Nicks video just has VOLUME, VOLUME, VOLUME

Here’s the back-story - donzblog.home.blog/2019/01/16/the-journey-begins/
Ah the good ole days when we could joke about terrorism, the apocalypse and Ground Zero
9:18 - "Febuary"?
when was the show with the bag o' bees?
Dad was going to take us to see Redd Foxx and Slappy White

Don, any chance you know the name of the song at the end? Thanks again for posting these by the way
"Substitute" by The Who. Big hit in 1966. The WMDB played it a lot during this period.
Is it just me or did young Dave have a Steve McQueen thing goin on?

And again: Later with Bob Costas and FNV were two distinct programs and shouldn’t be conflated into one.
Hal’s last name is Gurnee, not Gurney.
Gurtner - open wheel racing legend Hal Gurtner.
@2:00 I can't wait?? You think I can't wait? Just watch me pal
Comedy gold. Was that really Grant Tinker?
Portrayed by Elmer Gorry. A compilation later this year.
Don Giller Thanks. He had that funny awkward quality that was part of the Late night magic.
@@dongiller He was my grandfather!

Anyone ever Google these letter writers to see what became of them? I did - and they're all dead. Every one of them. Just coincidence? I think not.

There's a Herbert John "Herb" Bailey, from Wapeillo, Iowa, who died.
2. David Turner, Columbus Ohio: died in 2017 at 47. Would have been 16 in 1986

5. Tom Halbrook, Palmer, Massachusetts; evidently still alive

So of the five letter writers: only two appear to have passed away.

I vaguely recall it but can't date it at the moment.
