Geofatboy you are sir are a shaving legend. Well actually you come across as an all round proper nice gentleman. Thanks for the videos and the advice, keep on fella! Best wishes from London, England
If the soap is glycerine based, then you should be able to melt and our it. However, it the shave soap has tallow in it; then you will not be able to melt and pour it.
F***ing Brilliant!!!!! This works perfectly. Geo I swear to God you are the Godfather to wet shaving! I have learned more about shaving from you than my own Father! Keep the ideas coming.
I don't have a microwave, so I put it in a saucepan on the stove and poured it into my bowl. Worked a treat! I might add a dollop of glycerine next time to get an even silkier mix. Thanks Geo Top Tip!
Thanks for the tip. I have an Old Spice shaving mug and my soap spins around in it. Now I can get that little sucker to stay put a get some good lather. I would never have thought of this trick.
If it’s too small and you want it to stick, you just need to wet it with some hot water and put it into the bottom of a dry, cold/room temperature mug. It should keep from moving around
Place a new puck in a bigger mug, soak the puck in some hot water, lather up the puck, and do a wet, hot shave. Leave the mug sitting for a good while. The puck will become soft, and remain so for days. While it is soft, press the edges down with two thumbs, keep mashing it to flatten it out to conform to the mug. All soaps will work.
Thats what i do with arko sticks. Glycerin soaps you can nuke all you want. High tallow base you cant. mixed base you can nuke for a few seconds to soften then press puck to fit.
Have done this with both Arko and Palmolive shave sticks. Only difference is I don't attempt to melt them in the microwave, merely soften them after a series of 5 second bursts, in-between each one moulding and pressing the stick into the shape of the bowl. Never more than 5 seconds though, otherwise they bubble and cook, and turn into something unrelated to shaving soap.
Saw another video , guy said he used a cheese grater, grated up a stick of arko and put it into a tuper ware bowl...he also grated o e and put it into a department stick lol
If you don't have a microwave can you sit the puk of soap in the bowl and place the bowl into a pot of boiling water. Will the soap still melt to the shape of the bowl.
Hi geo hope all is well in the other side of the pond ..I was wondering if you could melt a shaving soap like paa I see you melted a hard puck but I wasn’t sure if you could with a croap/soap thankyou kindly Stan
I prefer to (if ceramic like this bowl) put it in boiling water (double boil.) Or if pouring into plastic storage container, I use a coffee mug in the boiling water. water line up as far as the soap will be.
Arko is a tallow based soap. The best way to migrate Arko to a container is to grate it with a cheese grater then compress it into any shape container.
angelzipp I've mixed in some Geo F Trumper's Skin Food with my shaving soap/cream before, but never mixed two soaps together... Interesting idea. Thanks for posting.
So I found this dove skin defense antibacterial 3N Q Hand + Body + Shaving Bar. I would like to hear opinion on this. Especially where does it fit on a teir list in this category of products like loreal total clean & nivea convieince.
I’m going back to old school shaving. Since I have already ordered a stainless steel bowl, this won’t work for me. There’s the normal oven though. I’ll start out with low temps, until I figure it out.
I tried putting shavings in a Pyrex into a boiling pot of water for an hour and still didn't melt. In the microwave it just puffs like a bar of Dove soap...how can I properly melt this soap??
hamdit It still smelled the same, still lathered the same, as you saw in the video, so I doubt that warming it degraded anything. Maybe an artisan soapmaker would clarify more...
***** Soap "ARKO" in the microwave is bad - "ARKO" soap based on tallow. I cut a stick a knife into small thin washers, then a condensing finger in his bowl. It turns out fine - and the soap does not deteriorate.
+geofatboy I tried it...The soap didn't turn to liquid although its made with glycerin. It softened and I kneaded some sandalwood essential oil into it, but it didn't change the smell much. Soap still lathers fine though.
Thanks for watching my Shave Soap Meltdown Video! Here's the link to the Colonel Conk Shaving Soaps for those who asked for it: www.shavenation.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=13_322_81
Tallow based soaps will not melt like glycerine based soaps. I had a Vintage Tallow based Old Spice stick, I heated it in microwave for 20 seconds. It doesn't melt but it gets very soft, so it is very easy to press/mould in to the container or cup. I suggest heat it for 10 seconds first and check how soft it is, if not soft enough try another 10 seconds.
Geo: I need to use a cream, rather than a soap puck, to get the kind of thick lather that you get. I pre-soak my brush, so that's not the issue. Do I need to step up to a better quality brush? Mine is a Mohawk brand, made in Canada. It appears to be some sort of animal hair. ??
Is bowl micro safe or else it will, crack your very expensive bowl after a few uses...unless it's metal it has moisture in the ceramic...I use a micro safe coffee mug..deep enough to keep lather in...with a small hole handle...put index finger through the hole three fingers under the mug and the thumb for support on the side...Makes the mug part of your hand. Complete control..allows you to whip the crap out of the soap what ever shape its in...that bowl that you use could get slippery during a shave..holding it from the bottom...
+William Trexler No, it doesn't get slippery, even with wet or cream laden fingers, you can still grip the bottom pedestal very easily. I've never dropped one yet!
+geofatboy A little bit of follow-up. It worked great. It seemed like it may have lost a slight bit of fragrance, but it lathered up nice in my GFB bowl! Oh! And I made the plunge this morning with my first straight. I still have all of my appendages. Thank you again for putting all these informative videos together.
well but this is a glycerin based soap , you cannot do such a thing with other soaps , I sometimes use hot water like a " baño maria " to melt other soaps , regards
+Roger G As I said in the video, you would not put metal in the microwave, which is common knowledge. Possibly you could warm your metal on the stove at very low heat. But I would contact the soap mfgr. first and see what they say about it.
Geofatboy you are sir are a shaving legend. Well actually you come across as an all round proper nice gentleman. Thanks for the videos and the advice, keep on fella! Best wishes from London, England
+glowy303 Thanks very much Sir for the kind words! My best from the USA!

Good Tip, Thanks Bob!
Thanks for the tip. I have an Old Spice shaving mug and my soap spins around in it. Now I can get that little sucker to stay put a get some good lather. I would never have thought of this trick.
I tried this after seeing this video. Worked like a charm. Thanks Geo!!
I tried this with Kell's soaps. Works really well. Thanks geo.
bkatbamna lol I know who ur profile pic is I love all Shaw Bro films lol wutang style 🙌
If it’s too small and you want it to stick, you just need to wet it with some hot water and put it into the bottom of a dry, cold/room temperature mug. It should keep from moving around
Great demonstration Geo :)
Good thing you mentioned to be careful what type of soaps to do it with!
Jammin GI James
Thanks James! Yep, Always best to check with the Soapmaker before Meltdown!
I have one of those Old Spice mugs. I found it at an antique mall. It's one of my favorites.
*****
It's a beauty!
I found one in a charity shop, with an unused puck of Old Spice soap in it! Cost me £1.
For the tallow based soap I do a hybrid aproach. Just 5-10 sec on microwave to soften, not melt. Once softened put in the mug an press with a glass
Interesting... I'll give it a try. Thanks for posting

robert stockton Aren't arko shave sticks tallow based?

You are so welcome!
If you don't have a microwave can you sit the puk of soap in the bowl and place the bowl into a pot of boiling water. Will the soap still melt to the shape of the bowl.
So I guess you can do the reverse and pour it out if you want to change soaps. Not sure what to pour it into tho.
Dear Sir,
Please can you tell me if you can do this with Tabac shaving soap refill ??
Many thanks
Richard
Perfect! Had no idea you could do that!
Thomas Aaron
As Pops always said, you learn something new every day!
This worked AWESOME! THANKS!
Can you please make a video on your budget friendly saftey razor kit?
Good one-Thanks for the request!
thanks man it worked. i dont have a shaving mug but i melted mine into a microwave bowl then poured it into my wooden bowl
Great!
Hi geo hope all is well in the other side of the pond ..I was wondering if you could melt a shaving soap like paa I see you melted a hard puck but I wasn’t sure if you could with a croap/soap thankyou kindly Stan
tallow soaps I grate down with a cheese grater. great video geo !

***** nice video. Yes indeed like that. Cheers geo. -cam-
I've used a wax warmer on mine, it works pretty well but it takes a little longer.
David Toulet-Crump
Good idea, David. Thanks for contributing.
This works with Vander Hagen soaps as well
Does it generally work better with hard soaps compared to softer soaps?
I wonder if you can do with stirling soaps
I prefer to (if ceramic like this bowl) put it in boiling water (double boil.)
Or if pouring into plastic storage container, I use a coffee mug in the boiling water. water line up as far as the soap will be.
Does it loose any potency of fragrance?
What about using the oven or the grill?
I tried it with Arko, not recomending, soap expanded in just a few seconds, looked kinda like a cottage cheese
Yep-Arko is not a glycerin based soap.
Arko contains lard I believe. I leave it on the sun for a couple minutes to make it softer and press it down to the bowl with my thumbs.
Arko is a tallow based soap. The best way to migrate Arko to a container is to grate it with a cheese grater then compress it into any shape container.
Now I know what to do with my new puck coming in. And get it to fit my shaving scuttle. I just ordered my lieutenant conq bay rum through amazon
Knowledge is power!
I had to melt a Col. Conk soap to fit in my mug and it works fine.
Thank you, for helping with this trick. Maybe it's possible to make some crazy mixtures. :) Different types of soaps.
angelzipp
I've mixed in some Geo F Trumper's Skin Food with my shaving soap/cream before, but never mixed two soaps together... Interesting idea. Thanks for posting.
I will try this with Van Der Hagen. Seems like it might work.

Interesting, I'll look out for it.
Hey! I like this canal:) How is temperatur in microwave when you make soap????
Greetings from Poland:)
who is watching this vid in 2019
Pandemic 2020*
Apparently lots of Gents!
2020 here
2021 Bub
Bro it’s 2022
Can this be done with Mitchell's wool fat and/or tabac?
Glycerin based... not tallow. Check the ingredients.
That's quite ingenious
LOL great vid Geo.
jwrappuhn71
Thanks!
Another great video and nice watch.
BrentAB67
Thanks Brent!
Aren't you supposed to transfer just a bit of soap from the container and latter it up in the bowl?
I’m going back to old school shaving. Since I have already ordered a stainless steel bowl, this won’t work for me. There’s the normal oven though. I’ll start out with low temps, until I figure it out.
Excellent

nice tip thanks, doesnt it degrade the essential oils that are used in the soap?
hamdit
It still smelled the same, still lathered the same, as you saw in the video, so I doubt that warming it degraded anything.
Maybe an artisan soapmaker would clarify more...
yeah i just figured that maybe it isnt even getting that hot so should be good, a great way to fit the soap perfectly.
Meltdown...Damn that was smart, why didn´t I think of that ? Cheers!
*****
That's why I'm here! Thanks Lars!
Thanks for the video Geo. I have a question if it's okay to microwave an Arko shave stick into a bowl?
*****
I haven't tried melting the Arko yet, maybe someone else has???

Pfaristo!
Will this work with Mitchell’s Wool Fat?
Mitchell's Wool Fat is a tallow based soap, not glycerin, so it won't melt down like this.
You think Arko Shave soap can be melted down and scent added via essential oil? Might need to try this.
+roscoep78 I don't think so.
+geofatboy I tried it...The soap didn't turn to liquid although its made with glycerin. It softened and I kneaded some sandalwood essential oil into it, but it didn't change the smell much. Soap still lathers fine though.
Does this also work with William's Mug?
Kick ass intro
Thanks Ricky! Give my best to Jimmy.
What if you use a metal bowl?
will this work with bearded jacks old spice type shaving soap?

It works just fine with proraso soap?
hi geofatboy. haw you ever try wilkinson sword shaving soap (blue)
Tallow based soaps will not melt like glycerine based soaps. I had a Vintage Tallow based Old Spice stick, I heated it in microwave for 20 seconds. Great video. How's that Parker Sandalwood compared to Taylor of Old Bond St. one?
Greg Frattare
Taylor is still my fave!
Don’t Tread Upstate I just got a Taylor sandalwood. Two shaves and it’s become my favorite

tomellis37
A good badger brush will whip up Conk soap or any other cream or soap pretty easily. www.shavenation.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=14
In my experience, boar brushes work better on soaps.
Neat idea. I imagine it makes your house smell good to after pulling the mug out of of the microwave.
Mike Berckenhoff
I wasn't doing it at the house but, you're probably right!
What about the van der Hagen ????
Does this work with Arko soaps?
No.
Anyone tried this with mitchels wool fat soap?
Got it!!

does anyone have a list of glycerin based shaving soaps....?
+Michael Petersen
Colonel Conk, Parker, Mama Bears... and:
+geofatboy and....???
Van Der Hagen Glycerin (the transparent one).
thx
Has anybody tried melting Captain's Choice soaps with this method?
Has anyone tried this with the ogalalla Bay Rum puck?
+RationalPrepping
Break off a small chunk, nuke it, and see if it melts down properly... If yes, then do the entire puck.
+geofatboy A little bit of follow-up. It worked great. It seemed like it may have lost a slight bit of fragrance, but it lathered up nice in my GFB bowl! Oh! does it works with taylor of old bond street shaving soap?
+Kirils Kostrovs
Nope, those are not glycerin based soaps.
just tried this with the camelot glycerin soap - soap destroyed :(
+Michael Petersen
I would try a small amount before nuking the entire puck...
3:04 Help !!! 😂🤣
Exactly!
First comment keep up the good work Geofatboy
Richard Manns
Thanks Richard! You got it!
Too bad the small bowl that came with the kit I bought just so happened to be stainless steel lol.
well but this is a glycerin based soap , you cannot do such a thing with other soaps , I sometimes use hot water like a " baño maria " to melt other soaps , regards
Thanks for sharing Robert. Bain Marie in the US correct?
well, this doesn't work on proraso shaving soap... found out the hard way...
Σπλεντιτ in the meanwhile:
"Just squeeze a bit in and start lathering..."
Nice! :)
Ralph Axelsson
Thanks Ralphie Boy!
how would you do this with a metal tin?
+Roger G As I said in the video, you would not put metal in the microwave, which is common knowledge. Possibly you could warm your metal on the stove at very low heat. But I would contact the soap mfgr. first and see what they say about it.
warm it in the plastic, then pour!! ta-dah 🃏
Roger G melt it in a spare coffee mug then pour into your metal container
I'm watching it in 2024
microwaves haven't changed!
Dose this work with Arko?
Don't think so, ARKO is a tallow based soap.
Thanks Geo
Pretty good video man. It’s cute how you make editing mistakes on purpose.
