President John Fitzgerald Kennedy once said,
"We will... do the other things,
    not because they are easy,
    but because they are hard."
And then... we went to the moon!
What kind of people are “We the People”,
that We should choose to face
with boldness and courage the task ahead,
    overcoming any obstacle or adversity,
in order to achieve those "other things"?

One day, someone asked Albert Einstein about the distance from the Earth to the Moon. Einstein replied, 'This is one of those things I don't need to remember, as it already exists in textbooks.' However, he added that with a few calculations and formulas, one could determine the exact distance.

    • @Stratoscope
      @Stratoscope 2 дня назад +7

There is also a story about a friend who visited Albert Einstein and during their conversation asked for the phone number of a mutual friend. Albert pulled a phone book off the shelf, thumbed through it to the right page, and gave his friend the number.
His friend was shocked. "You're Albert Einstein! Don't you have your friends' numbers memorized?"
Einstein replied, "Why should I memorize something when I can just look it up?"
Perhaps this was part of Einstein's genius. Instead of committing brain cells to mere facts that he could look up, he saved them for the important issues in his research.

I feel Lawrence's points also apply to the nightly "news" broadcasts on the big three networks. News coverage in a 30-minute broadcast that covers major events in 30 to 60 seconds is completely pointless and misleading.
The one good thing about this debate is that it will contrast clearly the choice between one candidate who stands for our Constitution and one candidate who is an aspiring tyrant who, if the DOJ were truly fulfilling it's mission, would have been charged with treason 4 years ago.

Your criticism is simply ILLOGICAL. NOBODY is suggesting that such a debate in any way mimics the day to day duties of a president. Rather , it is to show to the public the mental acumen and actual intelligence of the debaters. Also , the ability of each to think on his feet , under pressure, and yes , his memory and grasp of policy issues . Simple. That's what these debates do.

  • @louiseselfe616
    @louiseselfe616 2 дня назад +12

I disagree. What about when Presidents are meeting head to head with other Presidents/Heads of State? How they have to think on their feet in press interviews, and in rallies etc when the teleprompter goes down? In conferences and meetings with groups of world leaders? They can't turn to their staff every few minutes in those situations. I want to see them both raw, unassisted, using their own memory and knowledge. So I think the debate rules are sensible.

    • @fourquartets7900
      @fourquartets7900 2 дня назад +3

Yes, I absolutely agree with you. To be the leader of the free world requires a brain that is thinking ahead of the rest. Anything less really isn't good enough. Trump is so far from being good enough, it's a joke. Biden will find it tough going too, but he has an advantage over Trump which is that he isn't stark raving mad or a sociopath.

    • @yvonnetomenga5726
      @yvonnetomenga5726 2 дня назад +3

@louiseselfe616 • There are 2 inconsistencies with your criticism. The first is that you don't want Lawrence's format because it doesn't test all aspects of the job, only most of them. In my opinion, that's throwing the baby out with the bath water.
As to your examples of when a president needs to speak without staff, I question how accurate your examples are. They match the pictures at a table or gathering, but they don't match the entourage that travels with the president.
Since all these international meetings have a fixed agenda on which the president is briefed first, the debates should be altered to provide the questions to the candidate to mimic the real world. The president should also be allowed to consult with his staff, just as he would at the conference, staged photos notwithstanding.
As to the teleprompter going down, the President always has a hard copy of the speech and turns to that. (While I have seen Trump go on about not paying the teleprompter company.)

I want him to be provoked into showing his true Narcissistic psychopathy. I couldn't care less if it reflects the day to day job of a president surrounded with advisors! Because that would not be the case if (God forbid) he wins the election. He had no advisers preventing him from inviting an insurrection. He had no advisors preventing him from dangerously stealing national security documents. He would be even more out of control in a second term. Indeed he has stated that he would be a "dictator on Day One". So it is pointless showing the public a man supposedly tempered in his excesses by a "wise" cadre of political colleagues. Sounds like you just want a reality tv style event. You can hear what the candidates represent in their speeches at political events. Arguing and throwing insults at each other does nothing to clarify anything. Anyonw who doesn't know what these two men are offering politicallly by now, is just not paying attention. One side is offering a Christian nationalist authoritarian government with militant control and dismantling the government is their aim. Project 2025, created by the Heritage Foundation, Steven Miller and Steve Bannon, is the platform for the Republican party. The Heritage Foundation has been a powerful influence on this government since Reagan. They are a right wing religious political group. Everything you want to know about what a trump presidency will be is in that plan and today's Supreme Court decision on federal laws is one more step to facilitating it. No more EPA, FDA, FCC, Dept of Education, Labor Dept, etc. Biden offers virtually the opposite. He supports women's rights, voting rights, unions, clean environment, education, equality and the consititution. It's not a difficult decision which side to choose and the differences are stark.

The problem with the debates is not whether or not they reflect the job, they're not meant to, they're meant to give a window into the candidates, and indeed it is sometimes the case that neither candidate has yet done the job in question.
The problem with the debates is that they are not actual debates. An actual debate exists so that two individuals or teams who have prepared either their position or in some cases both positions may engage in good faith argumentation with the purpose of educating and enriching themselves and the audience.
Presidential debates do not exist for that purpose or operate in that context. So the question is only whether they serve the function they are meant to serve. They do, a bit, and there can in principle be a great deal that voters can glean from hearing someone speak extemporaneously, that goes beyond prepared speeches and pamphlets and ads.. And of course, they are not meant to be the sole basis for how a voter casts their vote. Indeed as bad as presidential debates may be, the real problem is the entire information ecosystem that surrounds US politics.
After all, the views of most Americans will have been decided long before the debate. The debate itself is not to blame for the overall context in which it exists. Perhaps, as a mere supplement to the information voters receive from a diverse range of sources the debates would serve a narrow purpose of giving voters a window into the mind of the candidate.
But proper debates would be a good deal better, a series of them, each individually on a single policy area. That kind of thing.

In this rare case, I disagree with Lawrence O'Donnell. What he is calling for with respect to communicating with staff would be a verbal melee on stage, and require a day-long "debate". When I was on debate team in school, the rules we followed were very close to what both parties have agreed to for this one. When I stood up at the podium, I had already prepared to give a cogent argument, without being allowed to consult with anyone mid-debate.
Lawrence argues that his format would be better because it reflects the quality and knowledge of advisers, and how the debater will actually function in office. If a debater has good advisers, it will be evident in how well they are able to speak on their own for 90 minutes.

Software engineering interviews can be just like presidential debates.
When we design a system or write the code for it, we have all the world's resources at our fingertips. We have powerful code editors and debuggers and development tools, and we've spent years learning and fine tuning those tools to make us comfortable and productive. For anything we don't already know, a simple web search will help us find it. And we have colleagues who we can bounce ideas off of.
But in an interview, you may well be required to write out the code for some tricky problem _on a whiteboard._ With no ability to use your familiar tools. Not even the ability to _edit_ your code, move lines around, add something you forgot.
It is a contrived artificial situation that bears no resemblance to how we do our work in the real world. I can't imagine why so many companies think it is a good idea.
It's as if you were hiring a professional musician, and instead of having them actually _audition_ and play a piece of music, you would have them write out on a whiteboard their philosophy of how they would interpret and perform that music.

And 32 of those 34 presidents who did not publicly debate were chosen by their political parties leadership. A selection not even influenced by the general public in a vote after a debate or in a primary. The real test would be how do we judge the QUALITY of the candidates put forth by the parties in the eras before and after televised debates and state primaries. Nixon is the first candidate chosen by primaries in the 1968 election. He was also the first candidate possibly defeated by a bad TV drama style broadcast debate performance. This 1960 debate, and those going forward, are not even formal debates. There are no debate judges evaluating the quality of the candidates arguments or the validity of their proofs.

They should be available for consultation, why not? It's like telling someone to do a math quiz without a calculator even though for the rest of your life when you do math you'll be using one.

@@ConfiscatedZyra Depends on the question, and the public would be able to decide for themselves if the candidate was leaning too much on their staff.
Like lets say the question is a simple "do you support labor unions?" and the candidate turns to staff instead of a simple yes or no, we'd see that. But if they said yes, and here's my staff to go in detail about what our plan is to support unions, that's a different story.

Let's just hope Biden doesn't poop his pants on the debate stage! How embarrassing for America would that be?!
JOE AND JILL WENT TO CAPITAL HILL
Joe and Jill went to Capital Hill
      To steal yet another election.
Joe fell down when he tried to stand
On the debate stage at the lectern.
Joe and Jill went to Capital Hill
      To steal yet another election.
When Joe fell down said Dr. Jill,
“We must change his drug selection”.
Joe and Jill went to Capital Hill
      To steal yet another election.
When Joe fell down Jobama said,
“For you I have great affection!”
Joe and Jill went to Capital Hill
      To steal yet another election.
When Joe fell down America said,
“Um, yeah, we’re gonna go in a different direction.”
Joe and Jill went to Capital Hill
      To steal yet another election.
When Joe fell down the people said,
“Enough of that you need penal correction!”
Speaking of Jobama, wanna hear some Jobama jokes?
Q: How many Jobamas does it take to change a light bulb?
A: None, as thanks to Jobama no one can afford to buy a new light bulb anymore!
Jobama is not senile, he can remember things that never even happened!
Jobama is such a good liar that when he tried to enter a ‘world’s biggest liar’ contest at a county fair, the contest organizers said, "Sorry, contest is for amateurs only, no professionals allowed".
Jobama is so dumb that when he was told at the debate prep that he needed to "make up his mind about immigration", he smeared lipstick all over his forehead!
Jobama is so old that his campaign aides are afraid to tell him to "act his age on stage" as they fear he will then lie down, fold his arms across his chest and die!
Jobama is so decrepit that the only drug that should be coursing through his veins at the debate is embalming fluid!
Jobama is so lame he can't run for president, he has to crawl!
Note: Hope you had a good laugh at my poem and Jobama jokes. If you did, then feel free to share them!
