I got the Viltrox to go with my EOS R. Autofocus was flawless, slightly lesser with eye detect but, as you say, for over half the price I can live with that. Golden video as always Rob!
Great video! I have been using Viltrox products for several years and did not hesitate to purchase the Viltrox adapter with control ring. Works Flawlessly!! Thanks again for your time and expert presentation.
A week later my Canon adaptor arrived! I only tested the Meke for a while and came to the same conclusions as you and have it as a back up. This 3rd party adaptor also felt much lighter and 'cheaper' built so would be a little careful if I was to stick my 500mm prime onto it in case it couldn't take the long term stress of its weight.
I ordered both, I wanted the viltrox one to put on my 100-400 sigma lens because it has the mount. I'll use the other one on my 600mm and all other ef lenses I have.
I think some buyers purchased 2+ thinking they would add one to every EF lens they owned. At present I have 5 EF lenses and only 2 RF, so I could buy 5 adapters and just leave them on. I only have one, and it is easy to accidentally leave it at home, still attached to a lens I used but did not take on this trip. Then my EF lenses I did take are useless. Then when there was a shortage some people were panic buying them, and other were speculating. Buying them to sell them at a profit on eBay.
I suspect canon made as many adapters as cameras however, more people than you might think would rather take the adapter off with the lens than the lens off the adapter. Let us say you got are a former canon owner and you trade in a 6d with ef 24-105 f4 L for the r6 kit with the rf 24-105 f4 L. You also have the ef 17-40 f4 l and the ef 70-200 f4 l, because of course you do. If we assue that you usually are going to be using the new RF lens as an everyday all arounder and swapping to one of the older lenses when you want to go a little wider or a little tighter than you can get with the 24-105 buying 2 adapters makes perfect sense... if you only have one, every time you swap lenses you are going to have to dig out the adapter install it on the lens then install it on the camera, or pull it off and put it away if you are swapping back to RF. If you have two put one on each lens and just treat all three like rf lenses. This also means not having to find and replace an extra pair of lens covers every time. Which means canon ends up selling way more adapters than cameras. Or they would except they didn't make enough.
Hi Rob, I bought a vilrtox adapter a few months ago to go with my R6, so I will give you my opinion on it. I have shot a few Sunday league football games with it and with a 70- 200 f2.8. The first few games were fine, but the last one I covered the auto focus would not work after about 20 mins, I couldn't even take a photo, everything just stopped working. I switched off the camera and disconnected the lens and mount, then reconnected everything. Sorted.. everything fine again. Done a cricket match today without any problems. But I do think you need to test it out with a heavy lens attached to it, as I've found a tiny bit of play in it, which may have caused the issues. can't compare it to an official Canon one. Agree with Ryland Russell comments Apart from that I'm generally happy with it. Good video, Thanks
I bought the viltrox with the ring to use with my rp. Seems to work really well, although I’ve had a couple times where autofocus doesn’t work at all and I have to disconnect and the connect back. But at least it’s available.
I bought the Viltrox to go with my RP while I waited for a Canon Control Ring adapter to become available. I have no issues with it and I almost canceled my order with Canon for the CR adapter, but I think I like having that extra command at my fingertips. Incidentally, there is a Viltrox control ring adapter for around $99 US that seems to get similar reviews to the straight adapter.

Got the adapter for my RP. Ordered from Amazon. Was using on my sigma 35mm f1.4 Art len. Was on a shoot & was continuously missing focus. Had to manual focus my shots. Wasn’t even shooting wide open around f4-5.6. Seems to be a compatibility or firmware issue between adapter and the sigma glass.
@@ReformationsGlassArt had to purchase a sigma firmware dock £30 from Amazon and update the lens firmware to its latest revision. It works but not perfectly.
That was an unbelieveable journey in my purchasing an R6 and an adapter. With no adapters for months, I ended up getting an R6 kit. Pretty smart how Canon made more off me since I had to get a lens if I wanted to use the R6. They make more that way. And they knew I would still get the adapter one day. The adapter took forever. I never considered non Canon. Hard to believe what I went through to get my new gear. Sigh
Hi Rob ! Thanks for the video . I’m using (pro mode) Viltrox on my Canon R about 9 months and my impression are next : 1) a quite movement between lens adapter and camera (like some grip lost). 2) after few shots about 100 or less ( dont know what depends off ) the camera freezing with focus on display , and I have to wait about 10/15sec or restart my camera ( almost always restarting camera ) it’s really annoying thing, I didn’t use the canon adapter yet but , I think will buy soon the canon ef rf adapter . And test it soon . Did some one have this issue ? Thanks and sorry for my eng ❤️
Stipulating that this could be user error, I've had godawful experiences with Commlitte and Viltrox that I never experienced with Canon EF-RF control ring adapter. Everything from difficult removing the lens from the adapter to a repeated error in which the Fstop value would be listed as "F0" and adjustments would not take effect unless I restarted my camera. Could have been user erorr or just a bad unit, but similar experiences with two different third-party brand really made me scared that continued use would risk damaging my lenses.
I got a Eos r with a 24-105 f4l and adaptor kit, got offered 165 pounds for the adapter so sold it, had another one which I got for 65 pounds off eglobal which I sold for 185 pounds, its crazy at the moment, currently have the control ring adapter and the Cpl one so no idea what they will go for but I need them for my lenses but some of the costs for the adapters are ridiculous, alternatives like these are ideal
I just contacted my guy in Saigon. He says the frame rate with the Viltrox is not as good as with the Canon adapter. Now I'm undecided. Do I wait until a Canon becomes available or do I buy the Viltrox. Hmm.................
Hi Rob Have you experienced any issues with AF servo spot with EF RF adaptor on R5. I have a Canon one and switching from say end of garden to nearer there is up to a 1 second delay. I have tried another adaptor which is the same and it happens with all my EF L series lens.
I wouldn’t recommend Viltrox adaptors at all. I had two adaptors and after my camera manufacturer released a firmware update over six months ago, my Viltrox adaptors stopped working. Got in touch with Viltrox and they said they would fix the issue. Now six months later, they still don’t know when they will be able to fix it. No iris control at all makes the Viltrox an expensive paperweight
On EOS R I am using the Viltrox adapter, but found that- burst shot is not working! Is it issue for using 3rd party/ viltrox adapter? Any review please from anybody?
Good practical info as usual Rob. I was fortunate to find a control ring version state side from a reputable dealer that did not jack up the price when others were charging 150-250% on top of list. I have owned viltrox adapters in past for another camera system and have experienced the "wobble." I agree with ppl that complain about this, but like you say, it's a good option to hold over until these are affordable again...also maybe use some electrical tape around the mount if you are gonna be in any kind of wet weather
@Mush both of the official canon versions reduce the image sensor and quality from 30.1 down to 11MP. Just want to see if the 3rd party adapter fixes this issue, ef-s is an old mount but still nice to use for photos.
@@MrJkornd808 the adapter is not reducing megapixel. Using an ef-s lens that is designed for a crop sensor lens on a full range camera is where the reduction is happening. The camera auto crops when using a crop sensor lens. Sony does this as well
I had nothing but trouble with Viltrox control ring adapter. Control ring did not work - firmware update required. Finding a compatible cable to do update I gave up after trying four. I think firmware update needed after each R6 firmware update. I managed to get Canon control ring version as well the “free EF-RF” adapter I got through Canon professional services deal. When I have replaced my remaining EF lens with RF, I will sell it, the adapters and the teleconverters. I will then be completely mirrorless and cashless lol.
you barely tell a difference between both adapters. I could tell that the canon was just sliiiiiighty sharper compared to the viltrox that is a little bit softer with the image comparisons
I've heard from some that the Viltrox screws come loose after a while... I have the Viltrox and have been happy so far. But I will grab the Canon adaptor eventually.
