  • By some metrics, he has two of the nastiest pitches in baseball. But before he could ever get the chance to showcase his talents, baseball moved on from him.

    The thing I took out of this video is that Rowen breaks the model because he’s so far off a normal MLB pitcher. The insane movement is partially because he throws so slow that his pitches travel more before reaching the plate. If his sinker was even ~85mph, he’d probably have some success, but big league hitters only have to recognize the direction the pitch is breaking and then hammer it if it’s in the zone. If he throws a single hanging pitch, it’s probably going 425 feet. Awesome video, though, finding these anomalies and digging into them is super cool.

    • @RockiesCanada
      @RockiesCanada 2 года назад +10

      That was exactly what I thought. The one thing that wasn't built into the equation was ability to recognize a pitch. It's possible that due to his arm-slot/mechanics, combined with his low velocity, batters were able to easily recognize his pitches and lay waste to him.
      Even so, it's entirely possible that he could be effective if he found a good way to tunnel his pitches and replicate his delivery. Even though he's retired, I'd like to see someone take a chance on him.

      @@RockiesCanada Well said. Angels fan and ex pro here. I would cringe over having to face a guy like Rowen as his speed and delivery distracts and gives you too much time to think. Rather face a 95+ 4 seam/ change / slider combo than his stuff. He just cant leave stuff around the middle... becomes BP. Loved watching him pitch though.

    The Angels infield (save for Walsh) wasn't particularly well suited to capitalize on all those grounders Rowen potentially put in play. That's my theory anyway, I don't understand how else someone like that didn't succeed.

    • @sethh5106
      @sethh5106 2 года назад

      If that were true he wouldve been successful in other stints. I think the answer is just there's some things you cant easily solve with advanced metrics. The eye test cant be entirely discarded, traditional stats cant be entirely discarded, because at the end of the day it doesnt matter what the metrics say you should be like, it only matters what the output is.

    This is a prime example why some of these analytics stats that you need a mathematics degree to figure out with can be a bit overrated. Despite how "elite" Rowen's expected run value made him look, he was never all that successful in the majors.

    • @sethh5106
      @sethh5106 2 года назад +2

      Exactly. Counting stats arent perfect, but they dont put forward this level of anomaly for qualified hitters and pitchers. I think developing new stats and new ways to look at the game is cool, but it doesnt matter if you cant prevent runs

    • @stevehardman4686
      @stevehardman4686 2 года назад

      What this video doesn't tell you, is that he also hadn't been that successful in the minors since 2016. While this video focuses on a statement from Rowen about how he manages to keep the ball on the ground, he had an GO/AO ratio of 0.19 in 2019(that is in 89.2 innings, so not a small sample size), whereas that number was well above 2.0 in each of the first 7 seasons in the minors. With hindsight, it is pretty clear that he should have had more of a chance in the majors in the 2013-2016 timeframe(and it was a huge disservice to all of us that he didn't get an extended shot back then), but only the most desperate of teams would have even thought about giving him a chance in 2021 as he was clearly 5 years past his prime.
      I don't know what number of pitches need to be thrown for flukes to start levelling out, I know for batters is was accepted that number was around 100 plate appearances, so it would figure something around 400 pitches thrown would be the minimum for any numbers to be taken seriously, and Rowan didn't reach half of that total.

    I think this is good evidence that not all metrics are valuable. A pitcher who can throw 100 mph can still be terrible. And position players like Brock Holt whose pitch is so high and arcing that it literally leaves the screen must have insane movement by this standard. But that doesn't make it good.
