WEEKEND WOGAN 10th ANNIVERSARY SERIES - Show 29/35
11.38am, live on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, 7 November 2010… Raul Malo performs 'O Sole Mio / It’s Now Or Never’ with yours truly providing the duet harmony.
The original Neapolitan song was written in 1898 by Giovanni Capurro, Eduardo di Capua and Alfredo Mazzucchi… the words for the English version were written by Aaron Schroeder and Wally Gold in 1960.
Being a fan of The Mavericks and especially Raul Malo for many years, I was so very excited to learn that Raul was going to appear on 'Weekend Wogan’ with us. During our Saturday rehearsal, whilst we were midway through one of Raul’s songs, we had to stop for a few minutes whilst our sound engineers fixed a problem with Raul’s foldback monitor. With Raul standing at the end of my piano with his guitar around his neck, and the great Michael Guerra with his accordion on, Raul and I started to discuss our favourite latin songs. He immediately started to play and sing ‘O Sole Mio. I started to play and sing along with a vocal harmony. Michael started to play some beautiful licks. The rhythm section started to tenderly accompany us. The girls and the horn guys just sat back, smiled and enjoyed the moment.
We ended up jamming the whole thing and immediately afterwards, having obviously enjoyed it, Raul suggested that we recreate exactly what we had just done, for the live show the following day, instead of one of the songs he had planned to do. And that’s what we did!
What you hear here is exactly how we jammed it that first time… we didn’t change a single thing. Organic and real… with a whole load of latino passion thrown in. I was incredibly flattered that the brilliant Raul Malo so generously allowed me to vocally feature so heavily alongside him. This was for sure one of the highlights of my year on ‘Weekend Wogan’. ❤️🎵🇮🇹🇨🇺
