    A couple of notes: Domingo's official birthdate is January 21, 1941: he would have been 76 at the date of this performance, not 74. Interesting that when Domingo was a tenor, he was often criticized for sounding like a baritone, and now that he is singing baritone rep (though he has never claimed to be a baritone), he is criticized for sounding like a tenor. I would suggest that the complaints stem from the same source: he sounds uniquely like himself, and since he is is associated with tenor repertoire, he sounds to most people like not like a generic tenor but like Placido Domingo, whom they know to have been a tenor. The cello reference is interesting, since he stated during his tenor days that the timbre of a cello was something he strived for. Apart from Hvorostovsky, who is not around anymore, who are the current baritones that the anti-Domingo faction would consider to be preferable in this role? As for the cabaletta, it is hardly a novelty. You are, of course, free to like it or not as you please, but it was Verdi who put it there, not Domingo.

      I totally agree Louise and remember the term bari-tenor used several decades ago by those who thought that Domingo should sing as a baritone. Where are their supporting voices now? Like all true divos Domingo's sound is unique. I also want to point out that at 76 he does not have much if any of a sign that signals the last phase of many voices - the dreaded wobble.

      Ok, we all know Domingo will never be a Verdi Baritone. He does not have the warmth, roundness, and open throat to really sell it as a baritone. The fact that he is singing baritone roles does not equate to him doing a good job, specially with a nasal and compressed sound. The reason why he has taken these roles is to sell tickets for the house, not because he has an amazing baritone. I will quote Domingo " I want to sing baritone because it is a fancy of mine..." (Metropolitan opera 2015) I have listen to tenors sing this aria as a warm up and sound like a baritone martin. Domingo sounds like a Tenor because of his approach to the passaggio secondo, which after decades of doing it as a tenor will not easily revert into a baritone approach. There are many baritones that can do an amazing job at singing Germont: Quinn Kelsey, Kim Jinchoo and there are many more, yet they are not in the spot light. Domingo needs to let it go and keep some of his dignity as one of the greatest tenors ever.

      I am sorry, but infact Domingo is born on 19.01.1934, his wife Martha is born in 1935...I possess an exact Document of his true birthday, which makes Domingos work even more extraordinary, even I don’t really agree with his baritone singing without any vocal substance in the middle and low range... But who cares: he is Placido Domingo 👌

    Yes, but he can hold the role as a Light Baritone and majority of people especially the Domingo fan base enjoy it so much. You got to realize that No one or even a single Tenor have ever attempted it in Opera stage and SOLD OUT the tickets. This is a History in the making. Yes, he doesn't have the depth of Dmitri H. or Leo Nucci but Dmitri nor Leo could not even attempt a "La Dona e Mobile" in the bathroom;. So much as in a BIG stage...I mean in the greatest Opera House in the World - The Metropolitan Opera in NY and had an outstanding acceptance from the majority of the audience and I am one of them. Yes, I saw it live at the Met and the atmosphere was incredible; a once in a life time experience. Didn't you know that Domingo is voted as the 3rd GREATEST OPERA SINGER IN THE WORLD? Yes !! he is and he is only one scale behind Pavarotti (No. 2) and Maria Callas being the No.1. So don't be so purist, enjoy a little twist in the opera world. Thank you for reading me/listening.

    • @anonymousdude1010
      @anonymousdude1010 4 года назад

      Leo Nucci in his younger years could well sing "La donna e' mobile", with a long B natural at the end too (and maybe he still can, in his bathroom): in Italy he always had to defend himself from haters who would say that his voice is more on the tenor side, which I don't believe. But think of this: if Leo Nucci is under scrutiny from the so called experts, can you imagine how much NOT a baritone the great Placido sounds? For trained ears this attempt is almost a joke (the cabaletta is even embarrassing). But then who cares? He is the great Domingo whatever he does, and he is not diminished by me or others telling the truth about his baritone attempts. His voice has made him one of the greatest tenors of all times. Some great tenors could really sing as great baritones later in their careers (Vinay for example). And some did the reverse (Melchior, Bergonzi, etc.). Not Placido, though.

    • @yummyyum36719

      Domingo actually started out as a lyric baritone in Mexico. For me the voice is too light for this particular role. in terms of timbre he sounds more like a Figaro (Rossini) or perhaps a Silvio (Pagliacci). Physically however he is too old for those roles. Is this "bad?" No. If I have a high baritone this good as my Germont I could make it work in a larger regional house. It just isn't "world class" baritone singing. It sells tickets because the name is Domingo. But I cannot help but wonder if it would sell as many, if not more tickets, were he to conduct the opera instead. Domingo is not a monumental conductor but he is solid, which is all that is needed for Traviata. This work, as the other middle Verdi works , is about the choice of singers, not the conductor. A good, sensitive musician with a clear baton can conduct this work well. Domingo does fall into that category. He should step onto the podium and let a real baritone sing the role.

      He does not sound bariton. He never did. Think of the case of a violin and a cello to compare, even if playing the same notes the great diference is in other aspects of the sound: color, texture, depth, thickness, darknes, roundness, etc. Still it is a healthy voice, but above all a great singer and performer. I'm a bass. A low bass. I've sung about thirty roles on stage - all bass roles. Things like Sarastro and Osmin and Fasolt and Fafner. But there was a new little opera company that paid well that needed a baritone for a secondary part in Traviata. So I auditioned with this aria. That was the only time I ever sang a baritone aria anywhere. I was pretty good. It's s simple melody and it doesn't go too high. Fortunately the maestro stopped me after the first verse and gave me the part. I was finished. Totally gassed. It's not the single high note that kills you its the tessitura.
    Domingo is two years older than I am. I was about seventy when I sang this. Proving I suppose that all men if they live long enough become baritones. Reversion to the mean?

      I think you mean he wasn't a very good baritone. Being a baritone is simply a function of the length of your vocal cords. It's a fixed anatomical feature. It's like the length of your nose. You can't go to some 'teacher' you heard about on the internet who will teach you how to have longer nose.
      Giorgio Tozzi was a low baritone who discovered he could stretch down to be bass. Bergonzi and Domingo were high baritones who stretched up.
      I have long cords so I'm a bass. Domingo had shorter cords intermediate between tenor and baritone so he was a tenor when he was young enough and strong enough to sing in the higher range. When he got older he couldn't do that anymore so he dropped down to being a baritone.
      Alas he had been a wonderful tenor but he was at best a mediocre baritone. I never could listen to him singing in that range. The tragedy was the young talented baritones who might have sung those performances didn't get heard.

As a dramatic tenor, and one with the greatest mastery of his art's factors, Domingo successfully manages to remain magnificent, now in the baritone repertory.
    He makes up for, with great tonal quality, the "dramatic baritone timbre" usually expected in such roles.

      Oh, come on! Many times? And have you ever heard the cabaletta after "Di Provenza"?! I'm sorry, but what records did you listen to? You can search it here on youtube, it's called "No, non udrai rimproveri". Macbeth Domingo always sing with final aria "Mal per me", it's from first version of Macbeth, 1847. And he is absolutely right - with this aria final is more logical than only with joyful chorus.

      Quite a few times and I have heard at least two of Callas' records, the Domingo-Stratas DVD, and probably a few more on RUclips. I can tell you quite frankly: I don't like this cabaletta and think it is not a good fit for Don Plácido's capabilities. As for Macbeth, I thought that the aria was a good choice, yet presenting it looked to me like an outdated stylistic option.

    • @mareliel
      @mareliel  7 лет назад

      Domingo-Stratas DVD is a film-opera, not full opera. :) Old, old records, yes, could be without this cabaletta but I think in any studio records you can here it, fo example Domingo-Cotrubas-Milnes, 1977 (cond. Kleiber). Or in any full video in youtube. So... if you don't like it - all questions for Verdi. :)

    Yes, he started as a baritone, which, imho, is what gave his voice that dark beauty, depth and richness of color. I'd have preferred if he'd left as a tenor, maybe slightly after his prime. This just doesn't quite cut it for me, but when I first heard him in the 1972 Met gala honoring Sir Rudolf Bing, I looked at my father and said "Now, THAT'S what a tenor should sound like!" I was hooked, and he remained my favorite tenor from that point on. I'll pass on his baritone efforts, though.

    Lo scandalo non è che un cantante oramai alla fine della sua carriera voglia riciclarsi in qualunque modo pur di stare ancora in scena. Lo scandalo è che qualcuno glielo permetta.
    Il diverso timbro sonoro dei personaggi di un'opera lirica non è un dettaglio secondario, ma è elemento fondamentale dell'espressione dei caratteri, dei sentimenti, dei ruoli. Togliere il contrasto e l'impasto fra l'inconfondibile timbro baritonale e quello del soprano e del tenore vuol dire stravolgere del tutto l'intenzione di Verdi. Dovrebbe essere una cosa semplicemente inconcepibile. E invece... giù applausi. Bah...

    • @MOV1983
      @MOV1983 4 года назад

      Just because a baritone can hit a high B does not mean he should become a tenor. It's about what you are comfortable with; and good for those singers who do not cave in to suggestions to switch tessitura, either to make more money or for more noteriaty. Leo Nucci has had a long and healthy career because he is smart. Any of you remember Ramón Vinay? The baritone that became a tenor and then switched back to being a baritone again? Madness. No one wants that. In my humble opinion, Domingo by all means should continue singing, but not in fully staged operas; he should do concerts like Bocelli. He would have a huge following.

I think the problem is Domingo doesn’t possess that size of a voice with the dark, baritonal timbre.

    He has as a tenor never had the depth - and the top is gone. But as an old pro he knows how to work with the conductor. The accompaniment from Verdi - normally so unobtrusive - here carries the performance through.
    That is where Verdi is so strong a composer: He knows that all singers have off-days, so let not that ruin the performance. Pavarotti was notorious for being very inconsistent.

For example, the bass aria "Vecchia Zimarra" from La Boheme (which incidentally I just recorded for my own channel) has been sung and recorded by some big-name tenors, up to and including Caruso. That's because it has no real low notes. But the aria sounds a bit dull when a tenor sings it, because it lies a the bottom of a tenor's range. IMHO, Domingo should have retired as the great tenor he was.

      You are just Jealous of his magnificent Ability. Domingo Retired as a Great Tenor and he will retire as a capable Baritone who brought so much satisfaction to most of the majority of the Music lover people like me and the rest except a Purist like you who actually know nothing about music as an enjoyment of happiness. All you care is INTRIGUE and Jealousy. You know Satan Loves you... Very Much.

      I was not too lazy to go to your channel and listen to "Vecchia zimarra". You know ... of course, that one is your channel and you have every right to upload whatever you want there, even such a sad ugly singing in an erased old voice (judging by your voice, you are 150 years old). Using your rhetoric, I advise you to retire as soon as possible and not torment the ears of your listeners.

      @@mareliel Thank you for replying to my comment. I tried to be respectful in what I wrote. For example, even though I criticized Mr. Domingo for singing as a baritone, I noted that he was a "great tenor." I also wrote that he sings well for his age. I even subscribed to your channel and liked the video. If you want to be disrespectful to people who sincerely and respectfully comment on your channel, that is your right. But it is not nice. I am sure that Mr. Domingo himself would not insult someone who criticized him in good faith. I know that for a fact , because I remember how, many years ago, when another prominent tenor said something negative about him, all Mr. Domingo said in reply was that the man was a "great colleague." That is truly a classy example that we should all follow. I wish you all the best. If you would prefer that I delete my comment, just let me know, and I will do so.

      @@CantorClassics I just wanted to show how incorrect and disrespectful the categorical "he must retire" looks. I think Mr. Domingo himself knows what he must to do and when he must to retire. Moreover, his voice is still healthy and in good condition.

      @mareliel So why didn't you simply write in the first place why you felt I was incorrect and disrespectful , instead of personally insulting me? Even if, as you wrote, I sound like I am am 150 years old and should retire (IMHO, I don't sound a day over 125), what does that have to do with whether _Mr. Domingo_ should retire? If we were face to face, would you have insulted me that way, just because we have a disagreement over a great singer whom we both admire?

    Domingo is probably the best baritone who ever sang at the end of his seventies. BUT that does not mean that his voice is still in great shape. If he didn´t have the famous name he wouldn´t be engaged. I glady pass when he performs in Berlin and the ticket prices climb endlessly.

      Altonahh10 baritone. If he performed where I was I would pay whatever the asking price just to hear him. He has done more for opera world wide than anyone in the late 20th or early 21st centuries. When he recovered from Covid 19 he took some other musicians on a tour to raise money for those victims of the virus who couldn't afford treatment. And at the age of 78. I'd say he has earned his name and the fees he can command for it. Bravo
      Maestro Domingo.

  • @bencopeland3560

    Seems there’s something of a consensus that he’s not a baritone but I want to challenge another thought commonly put forth in these comments - that he was a tenor with “baritonal” qualities. He absolutely was not. And the fact that he sang baritone rep as a teenager doesn’t change that fact. He was always a lyric tenor that could manage some spinto roles. He also had a sub-par top but that was down to technique more than anything else. There was never anything remotely “baritonal” about him.
