Well the design is one matter to make it look cool. Other is safety I think especially with these wide viewed windshield Toyota didn’t want the driver to be looking many places other than the road while driving.
Almost all cars in Japan have navigation systems in the cars now and these are all in the center of the car. So having the meter centered the driver has a shorter distance to look at both devices.

Also funny an asian guy (no discrimination, but mostly short ppl) demonstrates the head and leg space :)
Very nice car but here in Indonesia too expensive. Estima/Previa 2.0 has the same price as a Toyota Alphard 3.5 V A/T over here.
