After reading all of the comments below, there's sure a lot of griping for something that is free. Thanks for sharing this historic video of some of the largest steam locomotives ever built.
This video made me smile! I really enjoyed watching this film of the ACTUAL Union Pacific Railroad, the UP that operated HUGE steam locomotives over its Charter Line, from Council Bluffs, Iowa west to Ogden, Utah! This fikm showcases the UP system that I admire the most! Thanks for showing!
Many years ago I had the pleasure of seeing one of UP's Gas Turbine locomotives pulling a long freight train at Green River, Wyoming; I was standing on the foot bridge that goes over the tracks when the train passed directly below where I was standing. Not only was it the loudest thing I'd ever heard, but also I got roasted by its exhaust.
Nice original movies, really love it. But who put together the text? About the Challenger 3900 by 14:30 claiming the Challenger was constructed in a total of 85. As to my knowledge it was well over a hundred locomotives, som of them used by other operators.
1:40, 6:15, 13:14, and 13:42 Lucky photographers caught the Big Boys with the "As Delivered" After Coolers on their hand rails on tape! Most Big Boy videos didn't feature the as delivered after coolers on the Big Boys on old video footage except Pentrex's "Union Pacific Big Boy Collection" when Big Boy 4010 gets a bath!
Did this video get edited? I see several comments about sprocket noise and fake projector sound. I don't hear anything like that just music, I hope it's been edited or I'm losing my hearing. I enjoyed the video. Thank you.
Great video but the buzzing noise needs to go. Man is that noise annoying. P.S. To bad we can only imagine what a modern steam locomotive would look like and how it could perform :'(
u want a quiet vid? LOL or u want some fake engine sounds in it, its not fake unless they were recorded to revent copywright or it didnt record sound back then with footage
The one thing I find most ANNOYING about any "Periscope Film" is the stupid counter running in the lower middle of the screen... It does nothing but obscure the picture and blocks from view most, if not all of the detail that would otherwise be visible. I notice this a lot on almost ALL Periscope Films... I'd like to see the film NOT the stupid counter...
Here's the issue: this film has been saved but many others like it were destroyed and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like this on online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. So, in the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous RUclips users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content. We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to deal with these kind of issues.
PeriscopeFilm, Do you intend to bring out a DVD for sale of this film without the counter, as I have the exact same film on a std 8 movie by Blackhawk Films and it doesn't have the counter? After almost sixty years the std 8 movie sequences of my old film version have faded somewhat.

What fantastic and rare footage. Many thanks for all your hard work and allowing us to visit the past.

Awsome footage. I do regret missing the age of steam and am amazed by these almost living machines. Love them.
Outstanding! Always good to see new video
Fantastic video even without sound, you could feel the heat just the same

Great film

I enjoyed the video.
Thank you.
Why the annoying "sprocket" noise?
I agree. It's not difficult to remove and is really annoying.
Aside from that annoying "sprocket" noise, that counter at the base of the video is very distracting, too.
its transmitting subliminal messages in the vibrations. mute it.
Alongside that, there’s even one of the 9000 class, a FEF series (dunno what one that is) and what looks like a 4-6-0.
Great video but the buzzing noise needs to go. Man is that noise annoying.
P.S. To bad we can only imagine what a modern steam locomotive would look like and how it could perform :'(
SUGGESTION: Get rid of the fake film projector sound - IT'S TOO DAMNED LOUD!!!
u want a quiet vid? LOL or u want some fake engine sounds in it, its not fake unless they were recorded to revent copywright or it didnt record sound back then with footage
@@piercer4455 Perhaps he was using old equipment... Muting out the audio would have been much better. Perhaps with some old timey music instead
Terrible buzzing, great footage.
Now there is music. At least you won’t have to worry about the buzzing anymore.
This was originally a Blackhawk film, as I have a std 8 film copy of it.
The old iron horses of the West 🐎
too bad it was a silentfilm I would love to hear those engines ,but nice footage anyway
way to upload in low quality 480p..
