I have the same John Deere bought mine in 1988 had the oil filter kit put on and 32 years later I’m still mowing grass with mine just basic maintenance Excellent outfit. I have the bagger and a mulching kit also I don’t have the lights in mine it should go another 32 years I will be 90 years old by then lol 😂
Is it at all possible for you to make a video of the undercarriage in example looking at the mower deck and all of its attachment points and the muffler heat shield I'm restoring one back to all original and the bottom of it was damaged
had that same one,,1987 my dad bought it new and up till 09 the started quit and they lied and told us the whole engine needs to be taken apart to fix it,,,later found out as we was taking it part it came off just like a cars starter,,pricks probly was hopeing we would leave it so they can just fix it and sell it,,,nope,,,,Kawasaki motor,,,was real good......now we have a 09 150 I think,,,actually forget but its similar,,Briggs and Stratton motor 19.5 horse,,,nothing beats a Deere.
i hate dealer/mechanic shops for the most part. i understand they are a business and need to make money but at the same time the prices for small engine repair is outrageous. when i was young and naive my push mower broke down and i took it to get it fixed. a new carb, blade sharpen and other tune ups and i was staring at a $250 bill. I could have bought 4 or 5 push mowers off of craigslist for that price and most likely had i taken the time to youtube some information could have fixed it myself for less than $50.
Help! We are looking for information on how to engage the blades on the John Deere 160 Lawn Tractor! Can anyone give us some info? Or maybe happen to have a manual???? We were gifted the mower, (the previous owner died and his family thought that it needed a new carburetor, but we figured out that it was a spark pug replacement needed!) but can't figure out how to get the blades to engage. Is there a sequence to follow? Can't find the manual on line and we have never had a John Deere before. Eager to put his antique back to work!
got a 30 yr old 160; am on line trying to find a manual as mine is misplaced ... the little yellow lever on the top right is what engages the blades, though I'm suspecting that you know that and you have another problem?
we HAVE found that out, finally. But the blades are still not engaging. :( Hopefully, we will find a manual that won't cost $30.00 somewhere! We aren't certain what the problem is yet....but haven't given up yet either. We just don't have the financial ability to bring it to a JD Service Center. Thanks for the response.
There is a switch safety under the seat. When you sit on it it pushes the switch in, then engage the yellow switch on top right. If you accidentally fell off the seat blades would stop spinning. On mine it cracked and would not engage. I ordered a new one and it worked fine. www.google.com/search? q=deere+160+safety+seat+switch&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiOgpvO4ZDVAhUIWj4KHXMTAFQQ_AUICygC&biw=1366&bih=638#imgrc=8TpiwR3qi20EfM:
I have a 160. I had the same problem. Turned out the seat safety switch was rusted. I took it out, cleaned it up, put it back, and it worked fine. If you have a multi-meter you can check the continuity of the switch to see if it engages. Or you can pull the wiring connector and jumper the wires to see if that cures the problem.
pull up on the yellow part of the switch so you can flip switch up to on position.. .if still wot work PTO clutch is bad ,this is the part that looks like a pulley and front of belt goes around in front and up from deck.... simple to install...help if you had impact wrench ,,you tube
I just had my friend give me one of these after he upgraded. It runs great, just needs a new front wheel and a new deck belt.

I got one exactly like it had for years and still running perfect. It has a Kawasaki motor
that surging is caused by a clogged idle circuit in the carb
I just bought 2 lucky me!
Both running
One is ready for work
The other I had to sandblast the deck for good looks and it’s going back together soon
Is it at all possible for you to make a video of the undercarriage in example looking at the mower deck and all of its attachment points and the muffler heat shield I'm restoring one back to all original and the bottom of it was damaged
o61000 new video up for you. Hope it helps!
Looking for where the belts and springs go could u make a video
I have the same machine
I could send you a picture of the belt routing
Does anyone know the length of the belt used for the mower deck? I love mine but can’t find the right size to use. Thanks
Just had to replace mine. M82462 is the replacement belt. Not sure what the exact length is.

That s why I fix everything myself
Where is the oil filter on the John Deere 160 mower? I could not see one in your video. Thanks.
Unfortunately this model does not have an oil filter. You can get a kit for it if you need/want it though

Those front lights are yellow, it should look better with LED bulbs.
You are probably right but it most of the time you don’t mow in the dark
bit daft talking with it running lol
Idle is WAY too high...nice tractor, though!!!
Mower is still running good though at my parents all these years later and I haven’t done a single thing to it!
