the second amendment isn't just about protecting your property, it's about the citizen's right to defend themselves against tyranny. including the tyranny of their own government. the difference between the US and other countries, is that in other countries, the people are accountable to the government, whereas in America, the government is accountable to the people. some politicians have forgotten that, and that's why the second amendment is so important.

Marlena Benson: Unfortunately, the public education system has been teaching kids that to want land and a home makes you a greedy monster and that you should want much less.
There are still American citizens and immigrants who have a deeply ingrained desire to want the American Dream -- having a good job, a lovely home in a nice safe area, and a solid savings for themselves and their families. Just like the previous generations had. Like the ones many grew up in.
But, they don't realize that trying to serve two masters (their own dreams vs their political ideology) is enabling their political representatives to destroy their ability to access the truer, deeper desires.
It's a sad shame, but no one can force someone to see the truth. They have to want to see it. In the meantime, you'll hear people extolling the happiness of living in an cracker box apartment, in some degrading city, and with jobs they resent having in the first place even if it allows them to pay the bills

That is the absolute strangest explanation of American "gun culture" I've heard. Others before me here have talked about the 2nd Amendment and George III, etc. Not mentioned in the video was that for so much of our history, the population was moving to the frontier. Firearms were NEEDED for protection against dangerous animals, for taking game, protection against Native Americans or defense against criminals). It is ingrained in much of our culture. I was taught shooting starting about 7 or 8 years old with a BB gun, then a .22 caliber rifle at 12 (along with safety training).

Protection against natives? Weren't they just protecting their land? 20,000,000 natives were killed. You can't claim self defense on that one, it was their land.

I was running around the woods with a BB gun and machete by myself when I was 7 or 8. To many of us who grew up in the country, guns are just a part of our entire culture. It's not a "gun culture", it's independent, country culture. The video got several things wrong. Much of the land was not "given" to them by the Crown. As you noted, it was frontier land. Settlers braved the dense forests and Natives and flat out took the land on their own with no help from the Crown. Many of these same settlers/frontiersman/mountain men were pivotal in winning the Revolution, but get little credit.

King George III is the origin of America’s gun culture. When he turned tyrannical on the colonists, they realized the only way they could be free was to gain independence from Great Britain. It is a miracle those colonists were able to fight the greatest world power and emerge victorious. Part of that miracle was their ability to defend themselves with fire arms. From that incident, Americans learned the lesson that governments can turn tyrannical, thus, the people must be able to arm themselves. Arming oneself is not only for defense against tyrannical governments but also against criminals, who will always be able to gain access to firearms. Whoever is narrating this history is ignorant of the real origins of American gun ownership.

John Adams said, "Facts are stubborn things". Some things that work in other countries will not work in the US. There are many gun owners in the USA and if anyone tries to outlaw them there will be active resistance from MANY otherwise law-abiding people. There is also a law of unintended consequences. A war against guns will result in worse unintended consequences than the "war against drugs", which has resulted in many otherwise law-abiding and non-violent people going to jail and having their lives ruined. It has also resulted in the government being allowed to force us to bend over so a cop can look inside us with a flashlight. That kind of relationship between the government and its people is poisonous. Don't get me wrong, I am not in favor of drugs just like I am not in favor of alcohol addiction and I am certainly against using guns for theft or murder. However, guns are used to prevent theft and murder thousands of times every year even if they were never used and it may not even be reported. Many people who live in bad neighborhoods use a gun to prevent a crime don't report it, because a) they don't trust the police (applies to many black neighborhoods), or b) they may not be allowed to own a gun themselves. The criminals, however, will get their guns. This is a huge country and the black markets thrive when there is a demand.

The south wanted to secede from the union since the governing body which was in the north (mainly industrial), and the south (agricultural) wanted to trade with England and the European countries to avoid the northern fee being enacted on everything being traded. As the country was settled and the frontier kept getting pushed further and further away from urban centers, people were hours (or even days) away from help arriving if trouble should come their way. People had to rely on themselves for both provision (hunting food) and protection (personal defense), and the people who lacked the tool to accomplish those goals (i.e. a gun) probably had significantly shorter life spans than those who did.

Also, thanks to the Supreme Court NYSRPA vs. Bruening decision, the legal age to purchase a handgun is being revisited in an attempt to lower it from 21 to 18 (starting in Texas).
Currently, to purchase a long arm (rifle) the minimum age is 18 - the age one becomes a legal adult.
The Bruen decision is also on track to be used as the precedent to remove individual state permitting requirements & reciprocity laws, and continue the expansion of permitless carrying of handguns nationwide (currently 26 of 50 states allow permitless open & concealed carry of loaded firearms).

In our household we start our kids out at 6 years old with BB guns. It is typically a birthday or CHRISTmas present. Along with this gun they are also given strict instruction and training on how to properly load, carry and respect said gun. Then on to target practice. At around age 11 if the kids are still interested in learning how to hunt, they begin to study for their Hunters Safety course and when they pass they obtain their legal license to hunt. From our area in mid Missouri, the "deer" hunt is highest on the list of animals to be hunted. Our kids are never allowed to have a gun with out adult supervision until they are fully licensed at our home. Most homes in our area probably average 5 guns per household and many homes in the upper range of 50, plus ammunition for those firearms.

I am reminded of many years ago when I was teaching elementary school in a very rough neighborhood and there was a problem with knives. The school attempted to "ban" knives, just making the carriers better at hiding them. I caught one of my students with one and he said that very same thing to me. Plus, if he were to walk outside the school grounds unarmed, he would get jumped. I explained why he could not carry a knife on campus and therefore from then on, every morning when he got to school, he was come to the room and put his knife into a side drawer in my desk. He could pick it up as he left school. It was not long before I had a number of knives from students in other classes who would do the same. They never bothered each other's knives and fights dramatically declined on- and off-campus. It wasn't the knives causing the problems, it was the attempt to ban them without taking into consideration the students' concerns for their own safety.

Americans' right to own guns will never change. No matter what the government tries to do, it will fail. There are over 400 million legal guns in America, and every time some politician tries to limit our gun rights, Americans purchase even more guns. Americans have a healthy distrust of all government. We do not want politicians dictating our freedoms and lifestyle. Our guns are here to stay and that is great because the government must think twice before enacting illegal laws and regulations.

The other thing I would like to point out on here. Is that Americans have been armed from the beginning of America and yet no one was accidentally getting shot at home, no one was shooting up schools or malls or airports or colleges, etc. I grew up with guns and they were not locked in a gun safe. They were where we could get to them but you know we were taught by our parents not to play with them, not to touch them because you could accidentally hurt yourself or someone else. It was never a problem and the thing is every one we knew had guns. Most had a shotgun sitting in the corner of the room. No kids ever messed with it. You know why because we had good parents. We had parents that would whip your behind if you didn’t do as you were told. So if mom/dad said don’t touch something then you didn’t touch it. No need to lock any of the guns up or put them up out of the way. No need to baby proof our houses as we got our hands slapped if we were getting in the cabinets or playing in the toilet even at a barely walking stage. Guns have been a part of our history since it’s inception and guns were never a problem but now in our modern society all of a sudden guns are the problem. No it’s not guns that are the problem, it’s a lack of parenting, it’s a lack of enforcing the laws for criminals that are already on the books, it’s a lack morals, it’s a lack of being taught God and the Bible in the home and at school and in our courts/judicial system. And the fact that our politicians want to disarm us so they want to make every thing that happens a gun violence problem instead of calling these incidents what they are-mental illness and evil. They need to address the mental illness in this country instead of embracing mental illness and putting the blame on gun ownership.
It seems strange to me that more people owned guns in the past and we had little to no gun violence and yet today we have less gun owners and more violence. This is a problem but it’s not with the guns or the every day law abiding citizens which are always the ones being stripped of their gun rights or charged fees for this and that to buy or own a gun or ammo. Criminals will always be around and never follow the rules so gun laws will not make them less of a criminal and they will still get guns. America has always had criminals but back when every one had guns, you didn’t see to much crime as criminals knew everyone was carrying so it was a detriment to criminals to do a crime. But today we have stupid signs that say “This is a gun free zone.” Dumbest sign on the planet. If I was a criminal guess what my targets would be? Any place where I know guns aren’t allowed like schools, restaurants, hospitals, ballparks, concerts, some churches, etc that’s where I would go if I was a criminal. And if you have a sign telling me there’s no guns inside then that’s even better because there’s no guessing if someone might have a gun and be able to fire back, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel for criminals. Dumb, dumb, dumb!

Ok, couple things. It wasn't an armed insurrection to keep slavery. It was a war of independence fought over states rights vs federal. That is the reason that the rebels were allowed to keep their guns. It was a failed war of independence.
Gun culture may, may have ties to property, but it also has ties to actual, literal freedom. The first shots fired at Lexington and Concord, were because of British solders trying to confiscate a weapon cashe.

I am in Ohio, and we have constitutional carry in this state. If you are a adult in Ohio, and not a felon you can carry a gun, concealed or open. No license to own, buy , or carry, it's your right. They run you through the system doing a back ground check, and if you pass not being a criminal, you get to buy the gun right then, and there in the store. That right has been codified by the SCOTUS.
