Speaking as a Gen X’r I’d like to say the younger generations have to lose this absurd “cancelling” of historical figures because they said or did something that offends them. This is called Presentism and it judges the past by today’s standards. The fallacy with this myopic thinking is that we have to learn from the mistakes of history and effort to move forward from it. History stands as a cautionary tale. Erasing it because you don’t agree with it doesn’t make it go away.

Excellent essay. I think I have found this whole business of "death of the author" and "separating art from the artist" to be a pointless endeavor. Mostly because while there is undeniable merit in understanding from where something originates from, we are all just as messy as those whom it is envogue to cancel. And if not yet, then one day you will be. You will trip, because that's what life does, and that's what we as humans do. We are fallible as we are delicate. Always on the edge of calamity by our own or some other person's doing. "Life is a shipwreck, yet we must not forget to sing in the lifeboats". Art is that reminder. Art is that song. It matters not who it originates from, and we must not stifle the voices of others who sing even if they made a mistake in their lifetime. Art is the domain of humanity. We do not have to honor the art. But how each person is affected by the song, is their privilege borne by their ears.
I lost my favourite painting. I don't know the name, I don't know the artist and I started to forget how it looked. I made a full search 3 times in my life and haven't found anything. So death of an artist has a different meaning for me.
