Mallorca is the largest Spanish island in the western Mediterranean, about 170 kilometers from the Spanish mainland near Barcelona.
In the southwest of Mallorca is the large bay of Palma, on which lies the old capital of the former Kingdom of Mallorca and the current economic and political center of the Autonomous Region of the Balearic Islands. Palma has been a Roman foundation since the time the island was taken over by the Roman Empire in 123 BC. Today around 500,000 people live in the city, which is around half of the population of Mallorca.
The island has one of the highest per capita incomes in Spain. The main source of income is the tourism service sector. Almost three quarters of the island is agricultural land.
Mallorca ist die größte zu Spanien gehörende Insel im westlichen Mittelmeer, etwa 170 Kilometer vom spanischen Festland bei Barcelona entfernt.
Im Südwesten Mallorcas ist die große Bucht von Palma, an der die alte Hauptstadt des ehemaligen Königreichs Mallorca und das gegenwärtige wirtschaftliche und politische Zentrum der Autonomen Region der Balearen liegt. Palma ist eine römische Gründung seit der Zeit der Inbesitznahme der Insel durch das Römische Reich im Jahre 123 v. Chr. Heute leben in der Stadt ca 500000 Menschen, das ist ungefähr die Hälfte der Einwohner Mallorcas.
Die Insel hat eines der höchsten Pro-Kopf-Einkommen Spaniens. Haupteinkommensquelle ist der Dienstleistungsbereich Tourismus. Fast drei Viertel der Insel sind landwirtschaftliche Nutzflächen.
