(This is my Thank You letter to Paul Weller. He'll probably never see it, but I started writing here, and made something that's like a great eulogy without any icky party-killer like death hovering over the homage to a great.. (and a eulogy's meaningless to the subject if he/she's dead..probab. Paul's creative spirit has inspired me throughout my life. I'm so grateful I was introduced to The Jam when I was around 12 by a friend who worked in a record store. I live in the US, and they weren't a household name. The Clash were known, but people here were listening to bands like Styx and Loverboy!!! I relish the fact that Paul Weller has always pushed himself in new directions. He never wrested on his laurels as a legend. I'm an visual artist, and people like Mr. Weller inspire me. I tried to make a pact with myself to create what I feel, and to never be known for one style., . If painting I do seems formulaic, I try something completely different; and that's exciting and rewarding. Office jobs are routines..creativity''s the opposite of being honored for consistency and reliability. Bands like the Rolling Stones were all those things, but sometime after the Some Girls album in '78, they stopped trying, in my opinion (The Beatles knew to quit when they did; so did Seinfeld; but not the (initially brilliant The Simpsons).
Below is more of my tribute to Paul Weller, who never gave up on himself as a writer/musician.
Anyway, Paul, thanks for great music; and always doing your own thing, and forging new musical pathss within Pop, Punk and Rock and folk and even made lounge music great at times(.., as opposed to stars like Madonna who "reinvented herself" every few years with a new wardrobe and..why even mention Madonna at all...Well that's what the Autotune generation was inspired by. It's a generation where you don't have to sing to be a famous singer.David Bowie may have done the charmeleon thing, too (and sometimes it seemed forced and disingenuous, and was known to "borrow" styles of music from others...but he was still brilliant and iconic. There were lots of hits (and misses), but you moved on; always open to different directions. I can't imagine the amount of confidence it takes to leave the legendary Jam. Neil Young and Eric Clapton moved on from bands, too, and progressed. I'm kind of glad I'm not a huge celebrity (it could still happen). I just think fame and money and comfort would have destroyed my creativity.. just imagine leaving on of the greatest groups of 70's and because of "arrogance", you chucked it all to start The Style Council (and I'm sure the reviews of that first album was akin to treason to his fans and supportive critics. As a fellow artist said to me, about art, to be true to it, you have to have a mantra in your head.."If they don't like it, fuck 'em." I'm glad there are still heroes out there. They're not gods, they're humans; but they command respect without asking for it.

it's not in the way, it's not in your hair
you won't find it under your chair
it's not in a hollow, or pieces of wood
i don't see it anywhere, no more
and as long as the wind blows
    the tides flow - along
under a blue sky, on a new wave
    in a NEW World, Today.
it's not in a holler, not in a scream
you won't find it under your feet
it's Always INSIDE YOU, as Old as the Sun
it's Holding the ANSWERS, as New as the Young
and as long as the wind blows,
    the tides flow - along
under ablue sky, on a new wave
    in a NEW WORLD, Today.
crippling aspects of life, with no rhyme
nor that of reason, or that of time
to find True Meanings and Patterns in Things,
Symbols in making these Moments Exist
and as long as the wind blows
    the tides flow - along
under a blue sky, on a new wave,
in a NEW WORLD, Today .

I just picked up the Wild Wood Deluxe and what is amazing to me is and I've just listened to the 2nd bonus disc,( which is worth the purchase in itself) is how he was able to completely change his voice to sound just like Steve Winwood. The Traffic were great ,and he was able to come in and take over where they left off. This doesn't sound anything like The Style Council, and they didn't sound anything like The Jam.

My first experience of seeing him was in 1978, and I can remember it like yesterday. I can recall the whole day from the moment I got up, meeting my mates in our finery and feeling the excitement of going to see him and the band. I'm 55 now, happily married and a father, with a respectable career, yet I still feel the same when I go to see him. I'm an impressionable 16 year old again who still loves his music and watching him perform. Many happy returns Mr Weller, keep on rockin.

    Nice, but.
I think it it's words sat on top of a guitar sequence, rather than a song from the heart, where words and guitar/melody just come out and the song Mk1 is written quick.
A few tricks to make it give it the feel that it has. (which most artists do)
Very melodic, and shows his voice off.
It's nice, and i'll enjoy it, but that's my opinion/comment of it, and i'm a big fan of him before anyone thinks i'm being negative.

Dear Mr Weller, how must you feel? I just read the comment below, people open up to you. Complete strangers but in awe. But some say dreadful things and others beautiful. It’s part of life’s rich tapestry. I join them now, and I had a year beyond all years, just. I to am writing an album. My songs are on here. The best has yet to come, but my God I simply can not stop playing this track. Man every one really dug Wild Wood..but this my friend sits there. You sat there like many writers with an inanimate guitar and one day this didn’t exist and then “under a blue sky on a new wave” it was born. I don’t know a great deal about legacy’s. But your children’s, children will well up when they here this. It’s so utterly beautiful. It cradles you, and from me somewhere in the deepest depths it makes me feel like no other song, it’s 12.35 am and for about three weeks I have been trying to write a hook for my song. Each one of your words however sits like musical sonnets as if they were meant to always align just perfectly. Peace to you my friend. Your a style Guru.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Weller, somewhere in Málaga tonight I'll have a drink for your birthday as I've been doing for decades, I hope to do it for 60 more years, love you.

What a song! So many layers of artistry! It also happens to match the vibe of today for me so much--Wonderful in many, many respects! Add to that an anticipation of tomorrow never before known in my adult life? I hardly know what to do so I will just drift to sleep........

For all of us who were almost teenagers when we first loved all of his great songs with The Jam and The Style Counsil, this comes as a very speciall gift. One of the many, all along the way..from Greece.
