That little organ riff by Ray in the beginning was boss. Still gets my blood going. What a classic fuckin' tune. John owns the pocket as well. Phenomenal. Love playing this tune whenever the bartender yells "last call."
The greatest band live...and one I If the greatest of all time...when they improvised...when they followed the muse...they sowed a rich tapestry of rhythm, melody and lyrical potency that is simply unrivalled...all our lives would be poorer without them...thank you for the music lads👌♥️🎵c
I am 77 yrs old I sold radio time all over the USA countless times Translation free backstage passes It is subjective but in my opinion the doors were mind boggling LIVE They made the stones look like a nursing home residents
Someone build me a time machine so i can travel back to the 60's... I would follow them anywhere...i wouldn't miss a gig.. Was born in 1981...was blessed to see them live in Athens in 2004.. Without Jim and John but still...i saw two myths on stage. Best Band ever existed...The Doors Forever...Forever Alive.
Soul Kitchen "ABSOLUTELY LIVE". So great I that I am just floored! The only thing is that the song is so unbelievably excellent, and no one wants to disappoint the DOORS, but I really will never be able to "learn to forget".
This song has one of my favorite grooves by the Doors. I saw in an interview with the members of the Doors that they were trying to emulate a James Brown horn section with the funky rhythm that is established in the beginning of the song and continued throughout it.
What's interesting and unique is the way Robbie filled in on bass duties during the keyboard solos. If you listen he's playing basically basslines on guitar during the keyboard solos to reinforce the groove and let Manzarek play. Very cool musicianship. Luv and Peace.
There's a great analysis of this truly Morrison-ian song in Danny Sugarman's "No One Here Get's Out Alive"; Apparently in his early homeless days living on the roof of his friend in Venice, he'd often be able to get a really cheap meal at this restaurant called I believe "Olivia's" where they served among other items, inexpensive "Alphabet" soup. Many a night after drinking or whatever, .....Jim tried to stay there as long into the night as he could to keep warm ("Let me warm my mind near your gentle stove") before they finally closed ("Really want to stay here all night") and he had to return to his friend, Dennis Jacob's rooftop "home". ............ You can almost see Jim's young, fertile mind already conjuring up the lyrics to this future Doors classic, an ode to a small, now forgotten restaurant where he could stay late into the night, stop, take refuge and write down his thoughts and poems on the tiny note pad he always carried with him, and a few years later turn those lyrics into songs that would eventually make him famous world wide and forever. RIP Jim & Ray.....
This is probabaly one of the better live versions of "Soul Kitchen".......and it is pretty good when you take into account both instrumental solos.........Mazarek kicks ass at the end..........Krieger's solo is respectable and close to the original considering the poor sound conditions for recording that often occurred at concerts........"...learn to forget," he says pleading, almost tearful.....we'll never forget, Jim.
+Gerry Kirstein I would say thee best of the ones we have a record of, the quality, vocals, drumming and especially keyboard playing, the guitars not even too bad (though it's hard to find a perfect guitar solo with Robbie).
+Gerry Kirstein It's interesting how much life they gave to this song compared to the polished studio version which produced a stagnate, dated and dead sound, a looser version like this live one works better allowing the song to breathe
The concert announcer at the end of this song is my uncle Joe...my Dads brother...it was his job to announce the bands that played at this venue...he said the Doors were lovely guys.x
Well, the clock says it's time to close now I guess I'd better go now I'd really like to stay here all night The cars crawl past all stuffed with eyes Street lights share their hollow glow Your brain seems bruised with numb surprise Still one place to go Still one place to go Let me sleep all night in your soul kitchen Warm my mind near your gentle stove Turn me out and I'll wander baby Stumblin' in the neon groves Well, your fingers weave quick minarets Speak in secret alphabets I light another cigarette Learn to forget, learn to forget Learn to forget, learn to forget Let me sleep all night in your soul kitchen Warm my mind near your gentle stove Turn me out and I'll wander baby Stumblin' in the neon groves Well the clock says it's time to close now I know I have to go now I really want to stay here All night, all night, all night
Patrick , how can somebody even think of writing lyrics like "The cars all pass all stuffed with eyes , Street lights share their hollow glow......" WTF ! Amazing !
At the end of this one Morrison clearly sings, "The COP says it's time to close now." That cracked me up when I first heard it 50 years ago, and it cracks me up now. This is best version I've heard of this great, great song. The music fits the imagery: "secret alphabets," "weave quick minarets," "neon groves," "cars stuffed with eyes," and the key words, "learn to forget" -- nothing quite like it before or since.
When Manzarek takes over his solo at the end the song the power and force of what Morrison experienced in his original homeless days on Venice Beach become manifest once again........................"learn to forget" (trembling, sadly)..did you catch it (just before Mazarek takes over).............quintessential birth of tragedy, a future we are all heirs to.............................
+Gerry Kirstein It's got to be the best piece of organ playing on a song I've ever heard from the intro to the incredible way he builds a crescendo at the end solo
Screw it. . . .they were HOT and utterly unique. Saw them live twice. . . .played them a million times and still do. YOu can't match the Doors. . .totally unique and full of genius. Unbelilevable range of music. . . .some fun, some bizarre, some romantic, some mystical, some I can't describe, some freaky spooky, much super poetic. . .all GREAT! Yee hah!
man !!Robbie is generally underrated !! deserves more !! with many of his lyrics, as i understand , polished and honed by Jim and his small solos or tempo changing little guitar interludes , he was an integral part of the mystique of The Doors !! Jim and Ray were the face of doors but Robbie and John were also excellent !!!!
I think they were all indispensable and Robbie is one of the greatest guitarists of that era. . .and LIsten to John blast the drums on who do you love live new York 1970. . . .he blows the roof off. .. ..you can't subtract any one of these guys from the group and have the same unbelievable music. . .they were all HOT

My book "Some Are Born to Endless Night: Jim Morrison, Visions of Apocalypse and Transcendence" is now on Amazon. It took me almost five years to write it. His vision (of what our fear of death really was and how empty and hopeless American culture actually was) was prescient. In Chapter 9 ("Blood in the Streets: the Great Fire of Los Angeles") reflects an unconscious vision he had of a Los Angeles being destroyed by drought, street riots and fire is worth reading, Four songs contain the lyrics.
My oldest brother some then in LA mid sixties sadly he took his own life two years ago I miss him I would love too have him here suicide is a selfish act I will never get over it I am 56 years he was 74 years old he was my hero our Mother is 93 he had so much left to do I miss you Joe and I Love YOU
My book is finally on Amazon. "Some Are Born to Endless Night: Jim Morrison, Vision of Apocalypse and Transcendence." It took me almost five years to write it. It breaks down the sources and revolutionary philosophies (Blake, Rimbaud and Nietzsche) that influenced his vision as expressed in his song lyrics, focusing on the first three years of Morrison's life starting from Jakob's rooftop experience in mid summer 1965 to end of summer 1968 and the vision of death he had. Four 5 star reviews!
NOT A MORE TRUE WORD SAID @WITHOUTTAI ....HIS LYRICS R ABSOLUTELY UNMATCHED AND UNMATCHABLE, THEY PRODUCED A UNIQUE SOUND THAT NO OTHER BAND HAS BEEN ABLE 2 DO 2 THE SAME CALIBER, U KNOW ITS the doors WITHIN THE 1ST FEW BEATS!!! BRING IT ON LIZARD KING, have been a doors and jim fan 4 over 20 yrs now and my obsession has never faded, if anything it has intensified!!!!
this is my favorite version of soul kitchen!!!
Anything from the doors are good ..hard to pick a favorite

I WILL LOVE THE DOORS FOREVER.
me too! X
Best version

Not many rock bands could produce such deep groove! You can feel they are right on top of it here, they definitely were in the "Zone".
This was one of their better shows I was there; tripping on mushrooms
thanks goodness for you tube!! I miss those days

There has been no other band I like as much as The Doors.

I love this album. Nothing like pulling out the double vinyls and getting taken in by this amazing artist.
I bought it on vinyl the first time. Take the trip, free of charge.

Robbie was one of the greats with Bottle NECK gifted song writer and Jim knew this and said it many times
Los más grandes de todos los tiempos
My favourite version of soul kitchen . All the guys are on here . The last verse Jim's voice is on form .
His voice was always outstanding kid.
