Rob, you're template marking is genius, way back when I was an apprentice (20yrs ago) I was lucky enough too learn in London doing the same work as you do. How I miss those days, my foreman was meticulous in his approach like yourself and if I laid 200 bricks a day he was happy. All he ever wanted was perfection. Damn I wish I could work on those type of projects now. Keep going mate, your work is amazing

That is unreal. There won’t be many in the country that could achieve this. Like other have said, the other house bashers on RUclips may well slap down a thousand a day but they’d have absolutely no clue where to even start with something like this

The crazy thing about house bashers is that they actually really believe that they are good because they say they lay large amounts, and do you know what I've worked with hundreds of them over the years, and they are not that fast anyway, they sit in the bait cabins all day boasting how many they laid here and how much they made there, they are the laughing stock of the building game if they only knew

Hi Rob Your always and cutting bricks to precision, you should buy a flush cut blade for your grinder, 115 125 and 150 blades, this is from a stonemason of 36yrs.
Wow ! Have you been taught all these different techniques Rob or do you ad- lib any situations where you haven’t ? Would love to learn this stuff - any recommendations on courses I could attend - tired of square box site work !
I admire the way you use full-size drawing / templates to work out the design. I followed you clearly enough as you flattened the circle into an ellipse, but I did not quite understand how you used the information to make your cuts. - - - If you are not already familiar with it, you might enjoy looking at a facsimile copy of Sebastiano Serlio's 1611 publication, "The Five Books of Architecture" (reprinted 1982 by Dover Publications of New York).
Superb! How did craftsmen in the old days cut the shapes that you used the water cooled cutter for? Also, were they as accurate? Were you using the water cooled cutter for making the bricks that made the triangular patterns in the brickwork? I`m not a brickie, i used to work on sites with cowboy plasterers as a naieve 15year old, almost 50 years ago. I was conned by them. That`s another story though. That`s why i have great interest in your craftmanship. Wish i`d met people like you, too be taught the right way. Your skills are very rare and your pupils are very fortunate.
Those tradesmen long ago had more time than we do and they were taught properly when apprenticeships were 5 yrs, I remember having a 3 year apprenticeship and being mocked by the older guys saying that colleges will never be able to teach us what we need to know in that time... last week I found a college in Kent offering Level 2 in 8 weeks....thats just ridiculous. We were always told it takes 2 years for a lad to lay a brick. Now that doesn't mean it takes 2 years just to lay a brick, it means 2 years to understand most situations of how to lay a GOOD brick and all the implications that go with it. Then, they'd move onto technical stuff/advanced year 3. In my workshop I have a small group and I have space for 3 more....just saying.
@@robsonger1 even though I've been laying nearly 10 years I would definitely come to your workshops to learn some of your amazing skills. if I didn't have a wife 2 kids and lived 2.5 hours away I'd be there like a shot 😂

Hi rob wow that is some incredible craftsmanship, would you consider yourself a perfectionist?, do you work to a zero tolerance policy or do you have tolerances or allowances in your work that deviate from perfection?, is perfection unrealistic? Would you say someone like the NHBC tolerances is deemed as good standards to adhere to? One example from NHBC is that plumb ness can have tolerance of ±8mm per storey height (up to 3m) or is your philosophy is that it should be zero tolerance perfect? Would love to hear your thoughts from a master craftsman like yourself cheers
there are definitely allowances to make in a variety of disciplines, obviously the smaller the tolerance the better the work but in todays world of get'm down the standards have definitely fallen away. For instance the work I am presently doing (pictures on my instagram) are rubbed and gauged arches that is completely new to me. The time during preparation takes longer than to build it, but there is only 1mm max tolerance. This is what most bricklayers 100yrs ago could do with their eyes shut. Perfection these days comes at a cost, but remember, what we build now will be here 100's of years after we are gone, so if something takes an extra day to do rather than slash it up, I believe that extra day of getting it right will last 100s of years. thank you for watching, lots more to come...
As a level 3 trowel, I honestly feel like a chimp when I see the setting out you do, crazy that they allow a gold card to be achieved without vast knowledge 1st. Sad to say but skilled aspects of our craft will die over the next years to come. We got lazy.
