EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE while eating at EMILY IN PARES PHILIPPINES

- So many people suggested I eat at this beautiful corner cafe in Barangay Santa Cruz in Makati, Philippines.
While eating (at the 14:30 mark) I had what I can only describe as an intense emotional experience where the taste and smell of the food unlocked decades old memories that I haven't had in years.
The ability for food to help us remember lost memories is incredible. Please give Emily in Pares a try.

Sometimes Filipinos just need to see a humble foreigner sincerely enjoying the simplicities of Filipino culture in order to be inspired and appreciate our country more ourselves.
@benedictfrancisco3978 there are multiple foreigners like Kurt and myself who for decades have adopted the filipino culture and its complexities for happiness.
@@udirtypuppy5174a missionary in the phils. How long you live in our country
indeed
Why do filipinos like foreigners so much?
@@StrikeFirst01 i think it has something to do with our history, being under Spanish, US, and Japanese colonialism for around 300 + years. Even western trends do trend here and we hold with high regards anything that came from the west. So by nature, the majority of Filipinos have that tendency to look up or even be intimidated by foreigners especially Europeans or Americans. The effect however is reversed when it is the foreigners who are reaching out. So mostly, it is met with warm welcome and admiration.
15:03 man i just know what that core memory feels like when it hits. when me and my brother were young, we’re always excited for summer, because that just means school year is over and we have to spend 2 months of vacation in our lola and lolo’s house in province. i can still remember the smell of fried daing, pusit and garlic fried rice every morning, plus we have to wait for taho or pandesal vendor too, hearing my lolo sweeping the fallen dried leaves of mango tree with his walis tingting, and he always pile the leaves and then burn it. man those were the days. good old times. and also I remember every night we have to set up our kulambo (mosquito net) and then the smell of the katol (mosquito killer). aahhh so many good memories with my grandparents. miss them a lil bit today when you mentioned that core memory you had ☹️🥺❤ wish i could back to just to feel, hear, and smell one of those mornings i had every summer vacation. hays..
Thank you Kurt for being so nice and kind to Filipinos. We're also very sentimental people and simply love Western culture. I'm a bit ashamed to admit that most Filipinos thought all Americans or Europeans were rich. Anyway just enjoy your vlogging and stay in the Philippines. Ingat lagi coz you know not all people are good anywhere. God bless po 🙏😇.
You cry sir, because your good heart ,and you felt the Filipino heart of nanay.keep it up and be humble always.
For all I know, food cooked in the Philippines is always blessed by heaven.👼
so other country's food is cursed?
Amen.... I am absolutely agreed with you.... It is a God given talent to all Filipino Cook.
When we eat, our senses of taste, smell, and sight are engaged, and this can trigger emotional responses in our brains. Memorable food experiences evoke emotion because food has a powerful connection to our senses, memories, and cultural identities. The Sinangag and Beef Tapa definitely triggered a sense of comfort, safety and security now that you are away from your comfort zone. The Nanay who cooked Beef Tapa for you back in your Missionary days must have given you a long-lasting impression of that motherly-love that wiped away your feelings of uncertainty while you were away from home. We hope someday we would cross path, shake your hand and personally give our thanks to you, Kurt for loving the Philippines and our culture so much. ❤❤
wasting food
The Nanay also served caribou instead of beef which is cute and makes me smile @JoJoTwins
I love how you appreciate everything about our country. ❤ You’re a wonderful person.
First of all, thank you for your service! I have the highest respect for all the men and women who serve in the armed forces. We are forever indebted to your selfless sacrifice.
Filipinos have such admiration for people like you, Kurt. You immerse yourself into the Filipino culture. And yes, to know the culture, you must try one's cuisine! Filipinos are very sentimental to certain dishes because it DOES bring back memories for us (e.g. Lola's cooking). When someone says , "Kain na!" or in my case, "Mangan tayo!", I take that as an expression of love.
You, sir, are truly a Filipino at heart! Thank you again for sharing your experience with the world!
man i weep...your story...is very SO AMAZING..I AM SO PROUD OF YOU MAN...AS FILIPINO WE LIVE IN CRISIS , WE SURVIVE IN CRISIS AND WE ARE HAPPY IN CRISIS...WHILE THE EUROPEAN AND WESTERNERS THEY JUMP OFF IN THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE...MAN ..I AM SO PROUD OF YOU..BE SAFE AND GOD BLESS CHEERS
Tnx, Tagalog Kurt,,for promoting our country, and loving our local food,,,mabuhay ka,,at lagi Kang patnubayan Ng MAYKAPAL at gabayan sa lahat Ng iyong lakad,,ingat palagi,,,

Just for using a spoon I can say he is a Filipino for real ❤️🇵🇭
My neighborhood! I remember walking around in that area with my mom, and that bakery in the background was selling a kind of bread with ube in it. My mom was raving because the filling was made with real ube, not the flavoring type. Memories! ☺️
ewan ko ba tawang tawa ako sa "and this is the langaw" kulit nung langaw gusto sumama sa vlog.
Hugs!!! Thank you for spreading God's love in Abra, and now all over the Philippines. Those Nanays fed you not just food, but so much love from their hearts. It's always there. God bless you even more.
Also, it's the garlic flavor profile - northerners love garlic!

Hello Kurt, I am also a transplant from the US. When we eat certain food/dishes, we connect to moments of our past that reminds us of fond memories with people we respected and miss dearly. Enjoy your food travels in the Philippines❤🇵🇭🙏 God Bless.

@@alice_agogo Theres no reason to be rude, he/she just saying it because some of the non-filipino viewers may not get it.

Man... It's been a while since I was able to just watch a full vlog. This is such a raw, wholesome vlog that is just so good. You didn't even do B-rolls like other travel food vloggers do pero absorbed ako sa video dahil sa kwento mo, Kuya Kurt. More videos to come!
Thank you for sharing our culture to the world❤
You really a true Filipino by heart...thanks for sharing your utmost thought on us...we really appreciate it....take care and God bless.
I appreciate that!
Thats just the most filipino way of eating it. Food really brings you to a specific time or experience of your life where you wish and wanted to go back sometimes leaving the stress of your recent life behind. 🤙🏽
Thank u sir kurt for liking our country to stay
Enjoy your meals, Kurt. You are a very nice guy and you are a very good vlogger.
That’s what I’m gonna do when I get there. Just stuff myself eating ’ left and right and walk it off. And yeah you gotta drink bottled water if you wanna last eating the local food and not getting sick instead of the more pricey restaurants. I’d prefer the former cause it’s down to earth. Stay safe and healthy brother man. God Bless.

Kurt you're awesome I had no idea you served and as a marine during the early 2000s. That video takes me back, literally what the 2000s felt like with technology.
God bless you sir ,stay safe, enjoy your passion and thank you for inspiring us!🎉
This guy's Tagalog is smoother than mine, and I've been back 15yrs 😅
A step into a wonderful moment. Bro, you had a great life and still rolling. Keep going, a rain of blessing, good health and peace😊
Kurt,🎉 the burst in your mouth flavor. You are funny with your mixed taglish words and the lagaw(fly). Keep sharing all those fave food you keep hunting helping local eateries to succeed. You are a great walking advertisement. ❤. Best if luck on all the food food hunt. Go to Bicol as well, like Naga city, Albay, where the volcano ,mayon is still very much active. Spicy and coconut and. I will check here then if you had a chance to visit that part of the south of Luzon
love you sharing your personal stories to us. Sometimes being vulnerable gets you closer to people.
Much of our memories are lodged in our gut. You truly underwent a deep & intense experience with that tapsilog. Thank you for this video.
❤Sobrang galing monanng magtagalog kuya kurt...susuportahan kita lagi sa journey mo ...mabuhay ka!😊
I've been watching Ratatouille since 2013 I think and I cannot count how many times now. Sort of my comfort movie.😊
I also experience such nostalgia when the food I eat gives that taste or even smell of it served somewhere in time. Specially if it's made and served with love.🥰
Thank you Mr. Kurt for having the passion for Filipino culture. Mabuhay ka!🇵🇭 Your Filipino diction is doing good. It radiates the Filipino essence. God bless your endeavors.💖🙏
Salute!🇵🇭🎉
What made me subscribe is how raw and eager you want to delve in my fellow Filipinos everyday life. Mad respect also for trying, genuinely trying to connect and talk in our language when interacting. Too many vloggers nowadays but genuine approach is sometimes lacking. Me and my partner enjoyed every vlog of yours! More vlogs and subscribers to come, Kurt! And stay safe. :)
Nice. Your tagalog is good. Made me subscribe for your channel since I like the video.
One of my favorite food blogger
That thing you felt like that is because most Filipino they cook with a heart ❤️
11:04 As much as possible, get some bottled water and avoid tap water. My family and I usually get water delivered from filtered water store/stations, since local tap water is not very recommended, unfortunately. It is ok once in a while, but avoid it as much as possible. Also, try to make a research when eating in carinderia, or at least observe the place, like the cleanliness. Good carinderia is usually big (like 3 or more tables), and a lot of people eating or not empty, and looks clean enough. Ingat lagi!
🧡🧡🧡There’s nothing to say because you said it all. I just watched and appreciated your video. Keep safe!
Hey pare...your response to the food as transporting you to the past was something famously described in Marcel Proust's great novel, "Remembrance Of Things Past." The whole story is triggered by the protagonist bite of a madeleine biscuit.
❤wow galing na magtagalog ni sir nice naman😊
Thank you for being authentic and supporting the local businesses!😊
After watching you eat these two delicious dishes, now am craving for beef pares and beef tapa!! Heheheh 😂😂😂😂
una ko to napanood na video mo at nakakatuwa at nakakagutom at pati ako nahawa sa emotions mo 😅😂 . Misyonaryo ka pala dati kaya magaling ka magtagalog. Panoorin mo past videos mo kc mahilig din ako sa food vlogs, great and genuine content🎉
Drinking hot coffee or soup while it's hot is what we call "pampagana" like a starter. It makes you want to crave for more. If that makes sense to you. Cold drinks at the end is like the finisher to seal them all in. :)
It's either the sentiment of mom love to her kids that brings emotions. I have that too from time to time of my deceased mom.
Love what you do for the Philippines…Maraming salamat po!
Kuya Kurt, good morning and again nice watching to see you ordering more foods to patronize the Filipinos and the Philippines. Mabuhay sayo Kuya Kurt. Your Kapatid Vicky from Rocklin, California. ❤❤❤
