    Sorry, this is another Magnum Opus.....
    Power cuts are coming and that's not me being an alarmist - they are inevitable as we're in a new era of engineered scarcity and being prepared is the best way to avoid a 'Dark Winter'. Maybe it would be a good idea to plan for the future but if you think everything is A-OK then give this video a miss and ignore it until the power goes out.......just don't blame me when your fish pollute themselves through lack of filtration or freeze to death......Please share the video if you found it useful. I can't believe I forgot to include my petrol generator in this video but the information given for the Jackery 1000 is relevant to the petrol generator - check link below for the 2kW petrol generator I have. It's great (and very quiet).
    Also, a few people have suggested having a camping gas stove on hand to warm water to keep the tank up to temperature - that's a great idea.

    Hi pond guru, great informative video, great very useful advice. This winter the government are scaring the public with talk of weekly power cuts, been thinking of getting a battery or solar generator to relief me of all the stress of worrying about keeping g my chocolate chichids and other tropical fish alive this winter. I liked to jackery generators you displayed in your video, but did didn’t say how much they were to buy. Maybe I will find one on the Internet . I’ve have purchased bio media from you in the passed about 6+8 years ago, that was before the dreaded corona virus came along. Good to say your still around, and doing your videos, keep up the great work. Kind regards from Dennis, ex army veteran .

    Living in an area prone to power cuts I thought about before setting up my tank. I use a leisure battery that I always keep topped and a power inverter. It will run the filter for a long time and if it's winter time and the heater is needed it will run the filter and heater together for a good 4 -6 hrs.

    Honestly the best option i've found is to go to your local office consignment store (the places that buy up and re-sell office equipment when companies go out of business or upgrade their stuff). They are usually inundated with UPS's (Uninterruptable power supplies) sold at pretty hefty discounts ($40-80 CAD at my local). I have 2 hooked up to my main tank, one can power my FX6 for 3 hours, the other can keep my Tidal 110 filter and air pump running for 14 hours and if I'm concerned about the power being off for longer then that, unplugging the tidal and adding in a few extra sponge filters can keep the tank running for around 30 hours. I generally keep all my tanks filtration hooked up to one, and i only use self priming filters, so if the power goes out while I'm sleeping, chances are nothing ever turns off, and if it does its turns back on automatically when powers restored. Since my house has natural gas heating, i also have a sensor configured to check if the powers down and automatically set my thermostat to 28c.
    UPS's are also just great things to have all critical infrastructure in your home connected to. I have one connected to my router and modem, and I've never had a power outage that's lasted long enough for me to not have WiFi.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  5 месяцев назад

      That sounds like a great idea. If the grid goes down will the ignition still work for the gas supply or can you light it manually? (I don't have gas here so I genuinely don't know)

    • @lilpwnige
      @lilpwnige 5 месяцев назад

      @pondguru mine always has a very small pilot light that's always burning, if that ever goes out it shuts off the gas automatically and has a piezoelectric ignition switch (the same as a propane barbecue) that will turn on the gas and reignite it. It technically never "shuts off" it supplies gas to keep a tea candle sized flame running. So as long as the thermostat has backup battery (which lasts for around a week), and the WiFi is on (which lasts for about 2 days), all of the automations work. And if those things die, it will just maintain the last setting. Where i live, it regularly gets below -40c in winter, so to keep people from freezing to death, furnaces and natural gas infrastructure will pretty much work if everything else fails.

      @@lilpwnige Nice one - thanks for the extra information. That makes sense. I've looked for the devices in the UK and they are either extremely expensive (for models with a decent capacity) or cheap and practically useless due to the low battery capacity when compared to the likes of portable power stations.
      It seems like they're not too popular here in the UK since our electric grid is quite reliable and even when it goes down it tends to come back up in a few hours - to be fair that's all most of the UPS devices sold here will supply (as long as the wattage of devices connected is very low) and it is amazing how quickly an overstocked tank can get deoxygenated when the power goes off so having a UPS connected seems like a sensible option.

    I have four 55 gallon tanks and I'm following your suggestions to hopefully keep everyone alive as hurricane Ian is bearing down on us today and we're in line for a direct hit. Expecting power outages of at least a week. I have "Ziss" knock off filters with biohome from my canisters plus usb air pumps and power banks. I also have battery backup air stones that can run for 150 hours. Rest of my media is in mesh bags. I can't afford a solar generator at moment but it's on my list to buy next. I have one ziss filter set up and running as a test and I'm amazed at how much water these mini usb air pumps push through the filter. Thanks for great video. Wish us luck in Florida.

    • @susanbriggs862
      @susanbriggs862 2 года назад

      5 days in to power outage here along the coast on SE Florida. I wish now that I had ordered a solar charger, more power banks (to switch out while one is charging) and 2 filters per tank. My tanks are 4 ft long so having one Ziss filter at each end would have been ideal. Can't find the ammonia block pads here in US so substituted filter media pads that are infused with ammonia block resin. Probably not as good as what you recommended. I've fed the fish lightly twice (to keep big fishies from eating the smaller tank mates. I may not feed again for another 3 to 5 days as I have a small ammonia spike of 0.25 ppm. I had a limited number of media bags but hung up what biohome I could with air stones underneath. I also am running battery backup air pumps. The rest of my media is in their filter trays in the tank. Fish seem well. Treating the ammonia (and nitrites, haven't checked levels yet) with Prime. Finally got running water today, so if ammonia rises above 0.25 ppm, I will do partial water changes. Any other suggestions? Temperature is not an issue as tanks staying at 76°F.
      I wish I had more time to follow all of your suggestions but under mandatory emergency evacuation.

    If you lose power don't even think of using any of these alternatives for heating the water, the power that heaters draw is massive. I have a gas hob, it takes me a couple of minutes to heat water then pour it into an empty lemonade bottle and put that in the tank. For those who are all electric just buy a cheap camping stove which runs off a gas canister, probably £20 all in.

      (my other account) That would work to some degree but insulating the tank against heat loss and keeping the room warm would be a better initial use of time. After that, adding pop bottles filled with warm water would definitely radiate heat out into the water to prevent it getting too cold if you had the time and means to regularly generate hot water.

    How long can media sit in a canister filter (no power) before the bacteria dies?
    Unrelated to that question... i have an aquatic turtle whose filter went out months ago, and new filter took 2 months (lost in shipping) to arrive, AND then we moved.... and i broke the tank... im building a new one, its bigger and will have a filter to accommodate the new size. I will have a small canister filter without a built in pump as a pre filter and plan on designing it in a way that i could put small amounts of media in the pre filter and add a small pump should the power go out.
    When i lost the previous filter it was actually the bacteria i was most upset about. It had taken me almost 1.5 years to get it cycling right and have crystal clear water on a consistent basis, turtles are freaking nasty !

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  3 года назад

      As the water is held within the Biohome for weeks (even when the media is removed from the filter and left outside) the bacteria will stay active for days or even weeks. However, if it is left stored in water (e.g. in a canister filter) when the filter is off for a long time the water will quickly go 'bad' and become toxic since the bacteria still will be converting whatever 'food' they have in there and the waste products will have nowhere to go - the media needs to 'breathe' if you're going to store it for hours or days at a time while moving. Therefore just empty the filter of water and store the media in the filter with the in / out taps left open so it can breathe and it will keep no problem for days before you fire the filter up again.
      Ideally the filter would be cleaned as normal before moving so there isn't much muck in it while it is in storage before set up.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  3 года назад

      It will stay alive for as long as he 'food' it needs keeps flowing through the system - it may be worth doing a partial water change every few days to prevent it getting stale but other than that it should last for ages before the bacteria numbers take a big hit. Just keep the water flowing through the media. Ring me any time as I often miss comments.

    Well Battery or accu-pack for small tanks is good idea but 125Gallon whit Discus fish?
    My advise buy a power generator on petrol about 600-800Watt ,they are no so expensive 200-300Euro and you got one and cheaper when all your Discus Fish dies !
    Another problem is, when nobody is home and the power is down you got also a problem so Battery or accu-pack not gonna help you, my advise UPS backup for your filter and airpump that will kick in when the power is down.
    Heater will be of but 125gallon or more the water will not cool down so fast after couple hours or 6hours, but yes keep them filters running because after 30min-1hour your bacteria starts dying off and fast !
    When that happens and you came home after say 4-6hours and no power and power comes on again or you put a power generator on it, start the filter oh dead bacteria so you can wait for a ammonia spike and later nitrite spike !
    Glad have a power generator and UPS backup on my filter !
