But if you recall, before, Bish mining started functioning, the first thing the Government of Eritrea and the Australian company (at the time) invested was, to Import large tanks that came through Port Sudan.which, can hold thousands of gallons of waste , such as Lead, Mercury and Cyanide. The First serious approach is filtration, this breaks down the rocks to smaller particle sizes, if the particle size is at a minimum then you do not need Mercury, that is why they are using excessive amount of Water. this passes through different Carbon towers for filtration so that the water can be reused over and over over again. But after this process, there are chemicals of concern, such as Lead and Cyanide those chemicals must be kept, in the tanks for further filtration and break down for example you can break down cyanide by adding hydrogen peroxide, potassium permanganate, and thermal destruction. which easily takes care of the problem but it is imperative after the Permangnate treatment the Cyanide amount, in the water should not or must not Exceed 1ppm. I admire your concern but, what i admire most is the fact that the Government of Eritrea Primary concern with the Australians, was the issue of environmental contamination. One final thought I may be wrong but ,all The gold from Emba-Derho- ADi Nefas, etc.. are processed in Bish alone this makes it easier to protect the environment and also cost effective. I see your concern, but you didnt even propose alternative choice. So where do you want them to dump the waste? I saw how it is done in other African countries. Check Nigeria go to DRC even Ethiopia you can check Latin America, Asia ... bisha was managed very well with out excluding some risks. First of all, it is our first experience in mining they will learn a lot from this to minimise future risks.
