NEW Labor Rules Could ELIMINATE Freelancing in America! 😱 Here's How to Fight Back!

  • On March 11th, the Department of Labor will implement expanded criteria for classifying freelancers and independent contractors.
While meant to provide "protections," this vague and complex regulation risks restricting the opportunities and flexibility we currently enjoy as self-employed professionals.
I chose this freelance path for the independence, satisfaction, and ability to work on my own terms.
I don't need the government to protect me from how I CHOOSE to earn my living.
But this new rule could make working with clients far more difficult, eliminating freelance roles or opportunities out of an abundance of bureaucratic caution.
Now, this already took place in California resulting in catastrophic losses for freelancers there. The kicker? A study was just released showing that it not only decimated gig work there, but that it also negatively impactdd overall employment. #thanksBiden.
I try not to get political because I love you all despite who you voted for...
But this is extremely personal to me. Because if I'm being 100% honest. I cannot return to w2 employment. I tried going full-time and even though it was a writing job, I couldn't stand the feeling of being controlled as an employee.
This is not meant to scare a group of people who already tend to overthink things 🙋🏼‍♀️ but we must make our voices heard and defend our right to choose how we work.
If you're a US freelancer, I urge you to contact your representatives in Congress and ask them to support the Congressional Review Act proposed by Rep. Kevin Kiley and Sen. Bill Cassidy.
This bipartisan act would prevent the Department of Labor's overreaching rule from taking effect.
Here's what you can do, step by step, without exhausting the brain calories trying to figure it out.
I promise you this will take 10 mins max.
    1. Identify your rep by entering your zip here: www.house.gov/representatives...
    2. Copy and paste and personalize this letter before sending it to your congress rep. Big shout out to Ed Gandia for providing this template in his informative LinkedIn post: www.linkedin.com/posts/edgand...

This is not a partisan issue, but one of protecting our careers and livelihoods from flawed policy.
Please share this message and let's stand together, freelancers and independent contractors united for the right to work how and when we choose. Our flexibility and independence are worth fighting for.

Chris thank you for doing this. Ed Gandia was the first person to raise the alarms about this on LinkedIn.
I'm trying to share this with as much freelancers as I can.

Just like in 2020 I did not comply and wear a mask nor forced my clients to wear mask in my office. With this, I WILL NOT COMPLY!!!!

Christine: I was in New York. I saw New York and New Jersey people as very friendly and kind. You are a very Gorgeous person. I really agree with you that everyone must have a right to work independently.

Could impact a myriad of industries, especially in businesses that classify workers as ICs for tax purposes to minimize costs, as operating costs rise, which could lead to extensive layoffs(after temporarily boosting job numbers for the quarter). Imagine trucking, ride-sharing or food-service delivery companies having to classify a substantial amount of their gig workers as employees…it would drive them out of business. This affects other industries, including healthcare and real estate.
And if the FED is anticipating cutting rates in the summer rather than March as many had hoped, it’s important for many to prepare ahead for those 3+ months, as rate changes operate through a laggard effect.
    Appreciate the insights

Traditional job is modern slavery. Freelance might be better but not ideal.

From 1979 to 2020, net productivity rose 61.8%, while the hourly pay of typical workers grew far slower-increasing only 17.5% over four decades.
I am a freelancer - but make no mistake about it. Companies choosing to hire freelancers is better for me but it's NOT better for society. Companies only do what's in their best interest.

Terrific video as always. The Pro Act has been a topic of discussion for the last three years. There aren’t enough republican votes for this to see the light of day.

It's not about controlling you the freelancer, it's about controlling corporations who are evading taxes by not hiring full-time employees.

If it wasn't for labor protections we'd all still be slaves and children would still be factory workers. So, labor law is vital to economic success. I don't want to be a W2 employee either, but allowing corporations to get away with anything is not the answer. Universal income might be the best solution for those who cannot work in standard W2 setting.
