  • We have 3 things on the docket.
First: I am excited that We've teamed up with Lori and Susan from Robert E Williams Animal Rescue
Second: We have a new Challenge
And Last but definitely not least: We take you on an aerial tour and learn about West Milford NJ.
We've teamed up with Lori and Susan from Robert E Williams Animal Rescue which is an all-volunteer, foster-based charity. Their mission is to rescue abandoned, homeless, and other adoptable dogs and cats from high kill shelters.
This week let's help them get these three adorable Doggies a forever home. They had a hard road, coming all the way up from Polk County Animal Shelter to a foster right here in Oakland.
More on that at the end of the episode
Hey Everyone, like many of you I've had to work from home when the COVID lockdown started, and due to the monotony of sitting in front of a computer all day, I've adapted to make my life better, sometimes I work on the porch; sometimes I work on the hammock.
My challenge to you is to submit a fun picture or video clip, of you working during covid. The winner will be chosen by 3 kids.
Send your submissions to bart@skylandnj.com or tag me in your post @skylandnj #slcovidcreative to enter. The contest ends on April 1st. Winners will be announced in an upcoming episode of Skylands in April. Subscribe so you don't miss out.
In today's episode, we’ll be traveling to the picturesque town of West Mi
This town is a beautiful forested area of mountains and lakes. There are approximately 40 lakes in West Milford and on our mission today, we’re going to fly over 3 of those lakes. Upper Greenwood Lake, Mount Laurel Lake, and Bearfort Lake.
So sit back, relax, put your headphones on and enjoy the show:
FUN FACT: Did you know that West Milford is the largest town in Passaic County accounting for 40% of the county?
West Milford was first called New Milford, by the Dutch, when it was originally part of Western Bergen county. It is located in the Highlands where some of the oldest rocks can be found.
ANOTHER FUN FACT: These igneous and metamorphic rocks were believed to have been formed somewhere between 1.3 billion and 750 million years ago.
West Milford was Incorporated in 1834. The current population stands at about 27,000 people. Interestingly out of the approx 50,000 acres, west Milford takes up, 78% of that is forested and 83% of that is Preserved Lands because of their recognized ecological, natural, and cultural values.
The Bearfort Mountain is a ridge that’s located near the Wawayanda State Park in West Milford and the Appalachian Trail crosses along this ridge into New York.
Some things to do in West Milford include:
Visiting the Apshawa Preserve where you can go hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, fishing, and bird watching.
Hiking through the Hewitt State Forest, which offers hikers a chance to access the path, only accessible by foot, that leads to the Appalachian Trail.
And boating or just relaxing on one of these serene lakes.
Did you know: To this day there are mining operations in West Milford as well as active agriculture farms and farmers markets.

A long time ago, my grandparents lived in West Milford near Upper Greenwood Lake. I can remember driving north up the Greenwood Lake Turnpike from Wanaque to visit them. Very pretty country in this area.
I love what you are doing for the rescue dogs. I'm a cat person myself. The last two cats I have had were stray cats. The first cat was named Sydney and he was a Maine Coon cat and he passed away around 6 years ago. My present cat is named Katherine and she is a Korat cat. I also feed other stray cats and the Muscovy ducks in my vicinity.
