- Welcome back to another concept vehicle ILM style paint job.
This time it's the influential Joe Johnston AT-AT concept drawing from 1976, for The Empire Strikes Back.
Johnston and McQuarrie were, in my book, the most influential designers for the look and feel of the Star Wars universe.
I hope you enjoy this little trip into painting another Star Wars ILM style miniature. Considerably different to modern model painting techniques, the original ILM look is a lot more random and free, which makes them a joy to paint.
Thanks for checking this out. Happy modelling everyone.
I really, really love how all this early, wonderful concept art is being rediscovered and even turned into models. These things held me spellbound back in the 1970s when I was a kid - I've go gray hairs now, but I still LOVE seeing this stuff. Congratulations!
Thanks Viceroy. I do love a concept drawing. It inspires the rest of the design in ones head. Also adding the details is great fun just kitbashing and making it your own. More coming soon. Thanks for checking it out :-)
So basically, it's an Imperial Sandcrawler?
Yeah i guess so. Concept sketches just have that kind of influence and style.
You are 💯 % right. That was the first that came to my mind when I saw it. It's a new Sand Crawler concept so the Jawas will be happy this Christmas. And the lower panels at the side of the caterpillars are to low. That makes the vehicle a non all terrain transport. But the weathering technique is realistically perfect, interesting and cool.
Whe I see it I can feel the heavy weight and the hard, un-penetrable structure, like a Imperial vehicle should be. Congratulations. Good job.
Yeah, like a tiny sandcrawler. War Turtles and Chicken Walkers
Hey the Jawas had to get the sandcrawler from someone. It was probably abandoned by some empire's years ago, so the Jewas snatched it up.
Awesome, this should still be a vehicle in star wars.
From how it looked with just the primer to where it ended up is just fantastic. A masterclass in creating a 'used universe' model.
Has a very Hiss tank vibe to it. Love it!!!
Best weathering I've seen. Looks like ILM work.
Thanks, im trying all the time to get it more like my childhood favourites. 1970/80's ILM is a style which i just love.
Do you prefer the "model-for-filming" look (under studio lighting, like ILM, ready to be filmed) or "ship-as-appears-on-screen" look? Or something in between? Always fascinating, those creative choices are. @@APmodels
Love it! It is like a large version of the G.I. Joe Cobra tank.
I was thinking the same thing its a Cobra H.I.S.S tank
Wonder where GI Joe got the idea?? ;-)
I'm going to have to look into that later cutter! All these years I've been drawing onto making tape and carefully cutting out tiny stencils with a razor!
Have a look at one of my previous videos, it may help. Laser cutting masking is at 6.25 onwards. Thanks for checking the videos out. ruclips.net/video/z_Cg9ngscKY/видео.html
Wonderful work, and not going to lie, I prefer it to the screen ATATs
Thanks @volaim70. I think it looks pretty mean as well. But i do love an AT-AT. Cant wait to get some shots of them all together.
Makes so much more sense than a walking video. Bonus they wouldn't had to put harpoon launchers and tow cables on a flying vehicle.
This is what star wars is really about, this is for me a perfect vehicle from the star wars world not the Disney crap that has followed, 77 to 83 nothing else matters.... Amazing model.
Looks great fantastic, weathering techniques
Thank you Jerry, i try to keep the ILM look alive.
great design , could be at home in any sci fi really. Fantastic model
I do love the shape. Thank you :-)
Seriously impressive!
Excellent. A glimpse of what the Prelogy should have been.
Ohhh this little master work needs its own photoshoot with propper light and all.. Nice job!
You are so right. I do spend little time on the final shots. I'll be working on that for the future no doubt. Thanks for checking the videos out Lensflare Dave.
This is really cool!
Thank you :-)
love this!!!
Absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!!
Cheers @lams001. :-)
Excellent work! This is a much more believable "battle taxi" then that big box with long legs, I love it!
No tripping these bad boys up :-). Thanks for watching the videos.
Beautiful work 😎👌👍👍
thank you. :-)
It is an interesting concept, fortunately the production went for a more iconic shape, I Always remember the anecdote of a tescher that told me the experience of going to a cinema to see the empire strikes back, and he got really impressed by the ominous movement of the At at,
Yes, i do like a walker. Size for size these would have been fairly small, and not as imposing on screen. Thanks for checking the videos out.
Th@nks for sharing again :)
No problem. Thanks for watching :-)
Big track ! Love this !
OH yes, i remember those. There is a similarity in there somewhere, i just need to program it to get into the kitchen ;-). Thanks for watching Andrew.
@@APmodels thanks for your reply ...Great job
Im getting a sandcrawler/dune vibe from this. Very cool.
Fan-bloody-tastic! A great interpretation of the concept, easily equal to anything the ILM model shop wizards used to do.
Thanks man. I do love the way it looks in reality. Some of the concept drawings were not used purely because of how they translated into 3d, this one works really well in my eyes. Thanks again.
Unbelievable work mate. Just such a cool design and also amazing job bringing it to life. !!!
Hi Chris. Thanks man. More coming soon ;-)
Whe I see it I can feel the heavy weight and the hard, un-penetrable structure, like a Imperial vehicle should be. Congratulations. Good job.
Thank you sir. It is a monster tank thats for sure :-).
Another masterpiece Andy. Will have to arrange a photoshoot with the AT-AT and the chicken walker.
Definitely. That would be a cool image. Cheers Neil.
I won't be surprised if that concept was later use for multi-troop transport for prequels.
Awesome work!
Thank you! Cheers!
This is amazing, and I’m sure therapeutic for you, a chance to make something one of a kind. Honestly these vids are my favourite to watch on RUclips. You are a true master and make many people happy to log on! Thank you.
What a message to receive. Thank you very much, i hope i can make more that keep you entertained. Thank you so much for watching.
Beautiful work!
Thanks for the comment Super cool X2
Fantastic work!!!
Thank you Imperial grunt (love the name ). Sounds like it's your kind of transport ;-)
Mint video AP
Cheers Carl. Gotta keep em coming. :-)
Nice job 👍
Any chance you can share how you put the acrylic pieces together? Very interesting process and lovely results. Love your work 👍
There is something coming to show that procedure soon, so stay tuned :-). Thanks for the kind words it keeps me at it.
Weldon 3 or Weldon 4; qualifier: if you have tight joints. 4 is less viscous so will penetrate joints deeper but takes longer to fully dry. 4 will also have less hazing. 3 is a bit more “consumer” friendly. 4 you’ll need excellent ventilation and organic respirators; always a good idea even w 3. We’ve used 4 for everything from acrylic turntable covers to scale models.
Interesting Andy, turned out really good 👍👍
Thanks, i love this shape even though its a bit out there.
A fantastic video and channel, great to see this design brought to life like this. I totally agree with you about Johnston and McQuarrie's influence on the original trilogy, I think McQuarrie got the lion's share of the credit while Cantwell and Johnston were maybe slightly less publicised, even to this day. Your work is perfect here, I'm looking forward to watching all your uploads!
Thank you for the kind words, I don't know about perfect, but i do try. :-)
It's got a very LANDRAM feel to it,the painting and weathering is something else mate, quality work 😉👍
Thank you sir. I think it does have some kind of BSG feel to it. I try to keep the painting in a SW painting style. Much different to most modern styles, but i think it was the genesis of modern model painting. Thanks for checking the videos out :-)
This came out marvelous!
Thank you. I think it holds its own visually. One of J J's awesome designs.
Looks like the “GI Joe Hiss Tank” took some inspiration from Joe Johnston’s design.
"Go for the legs - it's our only chance of... aw crap!"
Very nice son, you just got one more subscriber.
Perfect. Cheers David, i'm much obliged.
Oy, that got my attention. Nice. Got kinda dizzy on the intro 😉.
Coupla questions?
Q1) what thickness acrylic/Perspex did you use? Looks like mix of 1/8 &1/4” (3mm/6mm) though looked like some was thinner, perhaps built up styrene?
Q2) any thoughts you can share on how you did the angled edge joinery? Our laser gets here in a few weeks, thinking of making some angle jigs for fixed edge angles to see how it works, we’ll see.
In the meantime gonna be a long night, heading over to Fusion 360 to model this thing, thinking 1:22.5 scale 😁
Thinking it’d look nice cut out of SR-MDF as well.
Cheers, nice work!
Opps sorry about the dizzyness. :-)
@@APmodels survived the 60’s and 70’s, so was a bit nostalgic of old TV special effects. Got a lot of her drawn up in 360 last night. Think we’ll be going w SR-MDF for our version. That way we can keep the weight manageable in 22:5 and can can use the angle jig on the little J Byrnes saw for the miter cuts if the laser doesn’t “cut it” (bad early morning Dad joke). Still gonna try a angle jig on the Epi when it gets here.
I recognize the Johnston sketch, gonna go back through the ‘ol book collection and see if I can locate any others for detailing. Might use a bit of poetic license and take some details from some of his other sketches he did while evolving the AT-AT. Gonna be a bit of a break from building Foss/Robertson inspired LDCOs (Large Dust Collecting Objects per the wife).
Don’t make uTub vids; haven’t posted any full builds on The RPF since my son built the 22:5 Stormwalker from Leviathan years ago. Think this’ll make a good build blog…a bit of sawing/lasering , a bit of 3D printing, a bit of brass machining should make for an entertaining holiday build.
Thanks for the inspiration 😉
Looks like a smaller version of a super heavy transport that came out from Games Workshop. It was the Capitol Imperialis and it too was tracked.
I'm not familiar with that, ill check it out, thanks. Cheers for watching.
Nice concept, you should show this to Adam Savage he would love to have it
I wouldn't be surprised if he has made one at some point. Thanks for checking it out.
It seems to have been inspired by an amphibious tracked armored vehicle, which is great because those are some of the largest and whackiest-looking real-life vehicles ou there.
Thats for sure. Thanks for watching the videos :-)
This would have been so cool as a unit in Star Wars Force Commander.
I would like to see it moving in a battle scene thats for sure. Thanks for checking the videos out :-)
@@APmodels Excellent modeling/painting work, also. Thank you for the vid.
At least it won't trip! Hahaha!
Absolutely beautiful Andy. I can see how the attention to detail really sells the paint job. It certainly looks more like a Sandcrawler than the final AT-AT. My only query is the aesthetic - I'm not sure about an Imperial vehicle looking grungy. I'm sure that they would have lots of minions whose job it would be to keep things like this clean!
Hi spacedock. Yeah, i thought about that for a while myself. Should i keep it more new looking, but eventually decided to do the same kind of weathering as they did on the AT-AT. I think for the next one i'll try a slightly less battered approach to see how it compares. Thanks for watching the videos, i really appreciate it. :-)
This channel has been around for 15 years and I'm only just discovering it now? I feel like a RIGHT IDIOT!!! 😆 Good news for me is I now have 15 years worth of great videos to catch up on!
Welcome robertdouble I hope you are enjoying the videos. thanks for checking them out :-)
Looks like Joe accidentally made a Giant Cobra Hiss Tank.
Iwould add this as an element into the special edtion TESB Hoth battle
👍👍
Cobraaaaaaaaaa!
I thought the same thing! 😂
Yes sir, there is definitely a lineage there. :-)
love it , great conceptualisation ! does it still have tank r/c function ??
Hi there. This one was built around a 1/18 toy tank, just to check if it was worth doing on a more expensive RC tank. The next one will be on the 1/16 RC version, and i will make sure that it is fully loaded. Thanks for checking the videos out. :-)
Beautifully painted, and a great finished model. Perhaps a bit more wear and tear along the track covers which I think would have been really worn and battered. I'm a fan of your work now, newly subscribed. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Dave. I think you're right. I could have gone in harder to start with, but i like to creep up on these finishes slowly just in case i overdo it. No doubt after a few weeks on the shelf it will get another going over. Thanks for checking out the videos, and thank you for the subscription.
Great video. What is the music track playing in the background. I really like it!
Thanks Blitz. I do my own music on my videos, just to make sure there are no copyright issues. Im glad you like the tunes. Thanks so much for watching my videos.
@@APmodelsMy pleasure. If you ever make them available on RUclips music or somewhere public, please let me know. I'd love to have this playing in the background as I create or go cruising around!
Nice! Any chance for a model release so we can 3D print this?
Hi there. There will be no files as this doesnt exist in this form as an STL. Its all acrylic sheet. At this size 3d printing flat surfaces doesn't give the finish of the acrylic. Buut if you fancy a kit, just let me know and ill sort one out for you. Thanks for checking it out.
Are the files available or will they be available so would could build our own?
HI there. No files exist for printing. But if you fancy an acrylic 68cm long version, just drop me a line. Thanks for checking it out
Wichtig schlecht is the AT-AT? Suitable for Tabletop games?
Hi there. This model is 68cm long. If you've got a massive gaming table i guess it could work :-). Thanks for checking it out
I would give you a like but I don't want to spoil the number.
Maybe someone can model the snow-trooper figures from the illustration.
That would be great. I would love a crew for it :-). Cheers for watching, i am much obliged.
Bigtrack
Yeah it has that vibe to it for sure. Thanks for checking it out.
Very nice model but the pointing hands are way to much. The weathering i think is to much too. In the Star - Wars time they should have new materials that didn't rust.
Just wait a bit and it will be in a disney production. They recycled almost all old drawings from real artists so far, instead of investing in new stuff.
Come on -it’s a Star Wars concept of the Cobra Hiss from G.I. Joe . I’m not interested
