Lots of people have wondered about the painting in the background! It's an original by my friend Carin Walsh; you can find more of her work on her instagram, here: instagram.com/carinwalshart?igshid=11utsaf019ew0
honestly i find it hard to focus on anything else in the vid cos that painting is so fuckin good
I expect to see you again for the same video type in 2021.
Like, I know it's an abstract, but I decided the thing on the lower left is a hell-coaster, and the three colorful bars are the riders' oversized terror-gauges.
I love how you kept foreshadowing FF7 Remake by putting it's ost throughout the video.
Good doggo
I hate how carefree and fun Jacob seems in this video.
Right? Ugh, it's the worst /s
Fuck happiness
What a freaking maniac
That wild chaotic energy almost gave me a seizure
fr
i love how carefree and fun jacob seems in this video
ayy kid quit brakin tha rules
He looks so different to his other videos too
same!
Love it
You've got to love how happy he seems to have heard "bad words" in Final Fantaisy 😊
“It keeps haunting America because it doesn’t know it’s dead” holy shit, that line just sold the game for me
Same.
i was gonna wait til after christmas to buy myself the game, but... yeah, i think it’s time for me too lol
Yeah, that hit hard asf.
I did not get it i have the game on my wishlist but like the way he explained it i am big cunfused i mostly get like confusing themes but this is the first wall i have hit
archer47 powers A ghost keeps moving around the world because it thinks it’s still alive. That’s the metaphor.
I was waiting the whole time for it to suddenly transition into an essay about the metaphysical implications of lists
Well now that you've mentioned such an essay, I feel some of the existential dread it would have given me,.
The unease you now feel about the lack of that transition IS the essay.
@@przemysawzanko6700 **extremely slow, reluctant clap**

The denseness of his beard deserves respect.
He's tried to shave it, the razors shatter
The beard demands power and it's like so perfect
Honestly like he doesn't even have that weird under lip gap that so many other people have
Everyone talks about the beard, but no one talks about the bun/ponytail thing.
That is a thing of beauty.
Best beard of 2020
I just wanted you to know that your Life in the Shadow of Midgar video is probably my favorite that you've made next to the Future of Writing About Games. Criminally under viewed.
Right? It was eye-opening and genuinely interesting. I shamelessly pushed it on all my friends.
Yo!! Thank you very much!
@@JacobGeller I enjoy your content
@@JacobGeller it is good
@@JacobGeller I really want to see a video on little inferno, even if it seems basic at the beginning, it is anything but that at the end. It’s only a couple hours, so if you don’t like it, it won’t be too big of a deal.
this is one of the most interesting and somewhat peculiar end of the year video game lists I've ever seen and it comes from one of my fave creators...I feel blessed
LOOKS LIKE I NAILED IT
I think that Lambhoot also put some interesting games on his favorite games of the year list.
As a gamedev who's been through gamedev heartbreaks this year and the years before, and who's passion for the work have been tried a lot recently, I wanted to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for reminding me over and over why I love videogames. Thank you for what you do.
I don't know a huge amount about the games industry, apart from what I get from Jim Sterling but I have so much love and respect for Game Devs and am repeatedly disgusted by how you guys seem to be treated. Time to unionise and start causing a ruckus, because one thing is clear the (so called) upper echelons within the game industry don't care much about you.
Be blessed and be safe.
Everyone is talking about how thick his beard is but his Eyebrows are solid. All of this man's hair is powerful.
_EXTRA_ *D* *E* *N* *S* *E*
I wonder how powerful the gravity is on that thing...
It's like a unibrow without being a unibrow
The beard looks like a cartoon beard haha
thank you jacob i dont know why people disliked that "you're the president of jack shit" line. people seemed ready to make fun of kojima writing and that was an easy target but i like it.
From what i've heard "Im Fragile, but not that fragile" and "Princess Beach" are far more contentious.
@@BaneDane_JB oh Princess Beach is the worst thing gaming has produced.
It's similar to the "president of what?" line from Escape from New York, and I love it.
5:25 -- Tori just wanted to give some insights into _Kentucky Route Zero_ from the canine perspective. I agree with Tori's take that it works better in the original monochrome. Still needed more squirrels to bark at though; missed opportunity there.
lol because she's a dog and she's colorblind?
Even if he’s just loosely improvising Jacob always sounds like he thought over every word a thousand times
i think it's because he speaks very eloquently and uses weird words, plus he has a lot of *feeling* on the things he says
I cant believe this content didn't give me an existential crisis today
The existential crisis is in realizing you'll never have a beard as full as Jacob's.
Bro Jacob you legitimately have one of the fullest beards I've ever seen
Every time I see his videos I cant help but think this. It's kind of incredible. Talk about beard envy.
It’s like weirdly so. Like it’s kinda more full than his head hair like wow
A Beardful of Jacob
Bro how did you post this comment so early
it reminds me of Chris Pirillo's hair
This feels like a dad being nice to you and taking you to IHOP instead of being disappointed in you.
I almost thought you'll pull a "Hey Vesauce Michael here" type intro
I'm not the only one who thought that omg.
Holy shit i expected the exact same thing to happen xd
He doesn't have to wear a mask outside, just clench the lips together and nobody could say.
At some point in our lives we will all have to admit that our beards will never be as beautiful as Jacob's.
Wait, you guys got beards?
I know him personally/went to college with him. His beard game has always been legendary
His beard is denser than a black hole
Same, in my teenage girl years I have hope for the same magestic flowing beard. Now I'm grown up, I realized it's an unattainable dream even with medical procedure.
@@cyncynshop Hey, don't give up your dreams, you could always wear a wig on your chin.
Jacob I swear your beard is more flourishing and rich than my entire social life.
Also FF7 Remake changed me too man, never played the original but *immediately* went and played it once I finished remake. Was not disappointed, such a tremendous story!
That game looks neato but playing the demo I had no context from the other parts of the series
@@njdotson I don't really play FF but I'm pretty sure each game stands pretty much entirely on its own, so there probably isn't any context.
njdotson Every FF is a stand-alone. You were being introduced to the world like every other player who was new to the game when the original FF 7 was released, don’t worry. FF tends to just drop you in.
I hope I can eventually play it.
I replayed through the original this year, and it is even better than I remembered. Even knowing (one of) the twist, the way it's presented is so good.
(And since the scenario writer also did Glory of Heracles 3 and 4, this is my plug for those games. GoH3 hero wears the dress at least as well as Cloud.
Seriously, Noshige is really talented. He managed to made us feel some real things for 30 years. FF VII, FF X, GoH4.)
@@shytendeakatamanoir9740 No doubt we'll be getting a PC/Xbox port once April rolls around.
Honorable mention for "In Other Waters" its like an even more indie subnautica with tons of detail depicting an incredibly well thought out ecosystem in an alien ocean. It feels like it was written by a marine biologist!
I haven't played it yet but it's been on my list for a while! I'm sure I'll love it
Oh yes, In Other Waters would certainly be on my list too. One of few games to give me the same biosphere exploration feels that Waking Mars gave me.
Oh ? I will check that out
"Number 5 […] ‘is like a slip-n-slide covered in olive oil.’"
Fall Guys?
"And on top of that, it's a horror game!"
Ah, so the marketing for Fall Guys!
Okay that was a much larger doggo than I was expecting to be picked up
I like the game where you shoot gun, it’s very unique you may not have even heard of the genre
It’s pretty cool but I prefer the game where you slash with sword.
I prefer both where you shoot gun and drive car, it's a great combo
I much prefer game with space ship and boom.
@Mr. Jefry idk sounds a little too avant garde
This dude is literally so cute
I KNOW, what a good boi, also Jacob looks good too
Bros y’all forgetting to say no homo

If I could turn your beard into a blanket I could survive the heat death of the universe.
What
@@thonktank1239 hes saying that when there is no heat in the universe, that a blanket made of this mans beard would keep him warm throughout

I really hope sincerity becomes the new zeitgeist post-pandemic. It's heartening to see other people as tired of edgy cynicism in everything as I am
“AOC wouldn’t invite me on [her Among Us] Stream and I refuse to learn any other way.”
Gosh damn I love you, Jacob.
The phrase "They're haunted by us" is one that's really ingrained in my head since I saw that video of yours a year ago. I can't afford to buy something internationally shipped to Argentina right now but I'll definitely be getting that pin in the future.
yo, check out the shipping rates, they are much more reasonable than you might think ;)
I love how carefree and fun Jacob seems in this video
My favorite video of yours is "Who's Afraid of Modern Art"
I loved the merch-ad part
I don’t think those words have ever been said in that order before
I got some NakeyJakey vibes
My man calling out a game I worked on!

I mean, yeah, it was a passing reference (Carnival games on the Wii) but, hell yeah!!
CARNIVAL GAMES SQUAD
I love how specific you get while describing these games, and what you love about them. I think you really do them justice. Sometimes in tier lists I think some games can get lost in the middle section and forgotten about. But you highlight each one by their specific strengths and differentiate between what makes each one good, so none of them are forgotten. I really enjoy your videos, thank you so much.
When you walked around the corner and said "hey"
I was expecting
"hey Vsauce, Michael here!"
Whenever Jacob uploads, I can feel my low attention span heighten and my mind becomes clearer.
You know it’s true
Seeing you genuinely happy about your own merch and channel as a whole is something that I didn't know I needed.
I know it's weird to say but your FF7 video actually, *really* made me take a long look at my political beliefs and non-beliefs and re-evaluate many aspects of that. I took an hour long shower after watching that video and just thought about things and it's weird to say but yeah a video essay about eco terrorists in video games literally changed my life.
Death Stranding and Half-Life: Alyx, known indie games.
those definitely aren’t indie games
Not in the general parlance sense, but technically HL:A is an indie game. The developer published and marketed it. That said, I get what you mean and found it funny.
@@reNINTENDO I feel like that's the equivalent of calling Mario Bros. an indie game
Oh, I HATE how carefree and-and fun Jacob seems in this video!
This is some high-level merch, Jesus. That pin is so beautiful.
Man, I want to see what Jacob has to say about Nier Automata.
Also Disco Elysium, oof
@@zakirzhangozin1288

A spectre is haunting America, a spectre wearing a floral shirt and an amazing beard
The painting over your mantle is beautiful.
thanks so much jacob :^) i only found you recently but your analyses mean a lot to me as a marrying of academia and poetry and its really everything ive wanted from a video essayist. i hope you had a good holiday and will have a great new years
I love/hate how carefree/anxious and fun/boring jacob seems in this video
Once again super great video. Hades, Carrion, Kentucky Route Zero such great indie classics. I would love to even more list videos. It is just great
I replayed Kentucky Route Zero recently. It’s beautiful, reminds me of a David Lynch film, or Twin Peaks. It even has a musical number in a bar.
This was the best merch ad in a while
You can tell he’s feeling carefree and fun because of the Hawaiian shirt
honestly, you are hands down my favourite creator of the year, maybe even ever, your videos have inspired me so much as a writer and much of your videos have been categorised as comfort videos in my mind. i cant remember the last time a youtube video have made me cry, but yours have, time and time again because of their beauty and how well made they are. i look forward to your content from the next year and you are just one of the most genuine and passionate creators out there.
I got so excited about the haunted house pin that I paused the video immediately after it was shown on screen, bought it, watched the Control/Anatomy/Haunted House video again, and then came back. THANK. YOU. JACOB. Your work genuinely inspires me more than anything else, specifically your content on living spaces, I can't wait for this pin!!! (Side note, if you made stickers, I'd buy like five)
I’m still mad that Barret’s voice actors wasn’t even nominated for best performance
Thanks for the list Jacob. During that banter in the self-promote it really felt like you were channeling Leo Vader comedy energy :P
Jacob, so many of your videos have moved me to tears-- the care you put into your editing, your words, your passion for video games as a medium and art form, how you articulate even the most mundane things and make them into something so immense and wonderful? I live for it. And while this video was not a tearjerker, I must say that I DID love how carefree and fun you seemed.
I discovered your content, I think, early-ish this year, and I must say, you've quickly grown to become one of my favorite RUclipsrs ever to watch. Your video essays are vastly entertaining, thought-provoking, and, perhaps most importantly of all, existential-dread-inducing. I greatly appreciate all of your content, and wish you the best for the coming year!
I hate how carefree and fun Jacob seems in this video 😅
omg. your beard. your hair. you seem happy, or at least enjoying yourself for the moment, and it's great. i do adore your normal videos, but this is different & goofy & we love to see it.
Okay I just feel the need to say how much I adore your videos. I always feel so fulfilled after watching them, your voice is soothing, your words are contemplative, and your editing is amazing. I can't wait to see what else you create.
thanks for being one of my most looked forward to video-makers, game-talker-abouters and all around creator this year! i love all the thoughts and analyses you have to share, as an artist and a video game enjoyer. keep it up!
That entire speech about Super Giant's staff direction I can just imagine Neil Druckmann profusely sweating and darting his eyes around.
Man I loved the Shadow of Midgar video, such an underrated gem of yours.
This was a delightful video and a nice cap off to the stuff you’ve been doing all year. Have spent like...a month maybe? catching up with your videos (chronologically, backwards) and am a little over halfway through, and yours has been a voice and style that I’ve just found universally compelling and enjoyable. Along with a few other creators you’ve been inspiring me to try to follow through on my own longtime desire to make material like this. Still haven’t taken the leap but yours are among the most inspirational videos so far (especially your syntheses of mediums). Keep up the great work!
I found your channel this year and I'm really grateful for your analysis. I think its honestly really helped me appreciate art more in general. Here's to a good 20201
The bombing theme from FF7 remake is perfectly fitting of Tory arriving in shot.
You’re such a cool guy Jacob, and this was a lot of fun to watch! Congrats on the sick merch!!
Watching you Jacob has helped me to really appreciate a lot of things in life. Thank you man
I really, really liked this video, I usually enjoy your stuff for the high amount of polish and how well structured everything is, but this video showed that you can absolutely pull off the "hanging out and chatting about stuff I think is neat" vibe!!
As Decided By One Man With Perfect Beard.
YES THANK YOU JACOB FOR RECOMMENDING PYRE, PEOPLE REALLY NEED TO PLAY THAT MORE!
I am so glad I discovered this channel, almost exactly a year ago I found this and I jump on any new video instantly now. You introduced me to my favorite game ever (Outer Wilds) and give me a new perspective every upload. Keep it up!
Love the list. Proud of you for keeping this great channel going and maintaining a visual positivity. My favorite channel on RUclips by far. Have a great new year, dude.
Jacob. Maybe you won’t read the comment but here goes nothing. This last two weeks I had to make an essay based on a question parting from a philosophical view and a youtubers content. I did it about video games as an art form. It’s due today, and you upload a video (which, to me, feels as one of the most special days of the month). I hope the essay makes up for the quality of your content. Thank you, Jacob.
Sorry Jacob. I know making you notice me twice is asking life too much, especially if it’s for school work, but it never occurred to me to ask, what do you think about the question?!!?!??
Ngl this is the best self promotion I've ever seen, I actually want those shirts now with the wii music in the bg
Hey, Jacob! I actually found your channel this year and it has become one of my absolute favorites. I look forward to every time you upload a new video. Cheers, and best wishes for the new year!
Love your videos so much jacob! Introduced my mom to video essays with your videos! She was amazed how much production value your videos have. Never stop creating!
Me after reading the title: "I wouldn't have it any other way"
"Boy, do I miss that cave and it's everlasting depths"
An awesome way to end the year. Glad i discovered your channel this year. Your passion and insight have been a blessing.
I think the first video I saw from you was your one comparing Devotion and Silent Hill 2, but your video on Wolfenstein really stuck with me. You put into words things that I've struggled to explain for years and I really appreciated that.
Looks like I’m rewatching Life in the Shadow of Midgar. You know, for the bajillionth time. Total coincidence, I assure you.
Holy crap, that poster with the Quetzal it's beautiful.
Greast video too I guess
I'm not sure which video that was a reference to, mind leading me to it?
Bro I absolutely love this video format, you should do this type more!!
Discovering (and then proceeding to binge) your content was one of the best things I did this year. So thank you, for all your hard work and great videos!

I hope Jacob’s beard feels as velvety as it looks
Bro, you straight up have some great videos here and I find myself watching them over and over. Keep up the great work!
Probably my favourite video on RUclips is your depths video. You’re a legend
I'm glad Carrion got a mention. That game messed with me hard, like playing this monster distorted my own self image or sense of self. Weirdly incredible, incredibly weird.
Hades is so darn good.
Also that dog is incredible!
hello i just wanted to say that your videos mean so much to me i love the way you look at and talk about games and most of your videos are my favourites of all time so keep doing what you are doing :)) thankyou !
A couple of months ago I believe I was rewatching your fear of depths video, and I thought to myself, “Yeah, everytime I watch this guy’s videos I end up enjoying them and coming out with new information.” So, I subscribed and I haven’t been disappointed. I love your content, and I look forward to another year of it.
Oh boy, it's him!
I think he talked about video games in this video? I'm not sure. I was too busy having an existential crisis over how full his beard is.
We love you Jacob! have a great 2021
Your passion reallly shines through and makes this video extra engaging and lovely
Honestly if there's something Final Fantasy has always done well it's whole-hearted embarrassing sincerity!
How dare this man tell me how I should feel about him? The nerve!
Teehee... Jacob your videos are always good.
I love this channel so much, please keep doing what you love
Not only did you sell me on Kentucky Route Zero, which I've had endlessly on the backburner for too long, but you prompted the realization that I'm just as excited about the incoming Hades critical analysis as I was putting 300 hours into it throughout its development. This unexpected little video was calming and refreshing and I can't think you enough for it.
