This is pure magic, get the DirectX11 renderer made by darknovismc here from moddb.com:
    www.moddb.com/...
The instructions should all be there - it can also be used on Unreal Gold, Rune and Deus Ex.
(You of course need a DirectX11 Capable graphics card)
Get the higher-res textures from here (now updated and with HD weapons!):
    sites.google.c...
    www.moddb.com/...
Here's a better description of tessellation (some of my other explanations of things are probably not too good either):

    Hello everyone !
As I see not everyone is happy with tesselation output so in the near future I'm planning to add a config file from which the renderer will read how much to tesselate any mesh model
(a factor from 0 to 1). So anyone would be able to edit this file to their likings :)
Also I'm going to add more user-prefered options like: hbao intensity , hdr tone mapping, etc.
Ollis Tubekanal - artifacts on 2:05 result from aggressive bsp geometry culling on the engine side. They are visible on every renderer. Unfortunately it will be nearly impossible to fix them without altering the engine source code ;)
SinealDOverom - yes indeed this texture pack has very few detail maps.
So you won't be seeing parallax occlusion mapping alot but overall these are much better than original ones.
Someone from modding community could export detail textures from original UT textures and pack them with HD ones using UE editor.
Maybe me ? But I haven't touched UnrealEditor for more than a decade and currenty I'm working on software algorithm to patch mesh holes as seen on 4:43.
I will update the renderer so fewer people will complain about the issues, but for now I kindly encourage you to visit my channel and my other programming work :)

@@IgnacioGouk Indeed, but there are always ways to work around/improve until then. What this person has done is quite impressive + what kentie.net did with the original DX10/11 renderers years back. I am hoping someone will find a way to make higher poly/tessellation optimised models - it may even be possible to export out the models from this mod into UT (with permission from the mod maker ofc): www.moddb.com/mods/ut2341-hd-arsenal

@@314Reactor This is great news that Epic went on agreement to give UT source code to these developers !
They also promised that all the renderers will still work with their changes.
I should ask them to add an option in UnrealTournament.ini file to disable software backface culling and frustrum culling for meshes.
As this would get rid of artifacts like: mesh holes and mesh distortions on screen edges. Unfortunately, I don't know if they would listen me.
So I need to popularize this renderer a little bit more and convince people to support this idea.

Tesselation was also available for Ati TruForm videocards years ago with some version of OpenGL renderer. Looked pretty much the same as on this video. It mostly visually breaks things in my opinion. The only thing that really looks better is the upper part of female models :)
It could be useful only if we could set some kind of 'enable tesselation' flag to each model. And since the game is very fast paced, nobody would care after a minute of playing the game. Still cool though!

If some have a problem getting the game running, this is my successful setup for getting the game up and running without modern graphical additions:
    1. Install the original game from disc (v. 400) (I don't have the GotY edition).
    2. Go to www.oldunreal.com/officialpatches.html, scroll down to the Unreal Tournament Windows section, then download and install in order:
    - utpatch428.exe
    - utpatch432.exe
    - utpatch436.exe
    - UTPGPatch451b.exe
These, I believe, are the official patches released by Epic Games before they stopped supporting the game.
    3. Go to www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/ and download "Direct3D9 renderer version 1.3 for UT: utd3d9r13.zip (107 KB)".
    4. Unzip the folder and drop the files it contains into your System-folder in your UnrealTournament installations-folder. More detailed instructions are written on the site.
    5. When you start the game, itf it prompts you to choose graphics renderer, select the "show all" radio button and select the Direct3D9 renderer. If it doesn't prompt you, go in to the properties in game and choose the renderer from there.
Concidering the video: This is great! Though I'm not entirely sure if I like the new tessalation. Some of it looks good, but some looks (and is, of what I gather from the video) unintentional and makes the model look worse. However I must admit, it makes the game look far less old. Especially the character models. However! I play on a thinkpad 13 without graphics card and the Dx11-renderer is suuuper slow. It's unplayable.
What I finally settled on was the Dx9-renderer.

Forgive my ignorance, but would this be compatible with other UT99 engine games not listed in your explanation, like Clive Barker's Undying? Undying is one of my all time favorites and I'd really like to give it a try with this.
As a sidenote, I think Undying was a modded engine version too, as it had what at least looked to me like realtime lighting/shadowing, albeit a very primitive version. It was an understated effect, but one which I didn't notice at all in any other UT99 engine game from the era. In Deus Ex for example lighting was just like the old GoldSrc (HL1) engine: 100% prerendered lightmaps and your janky flashlight beam ie; a circle of brightness that cast no shadows and always seemed to get "stuck" on objects and NPCs if you know what I mean. Say if pointed at an NPC standing in front of a wall, the flashlight would only switch between 'lighting' the wall or the person but not both, like it was this little circle of brightness locked/limited to one "surface" or object at a time, and no shadowing or shading. In Undying in the same scenario your flashlight would cast light on both NPC and the wall around it, and a proper shaped shadow of the NPC would appear on the wall behind and move around as the lightsource did. It was just rarely noticeable as the vast majority of the game seemed to use prerendered, static lightmaps and you only got the nice lighting effect from your flashlight and burning fires. Sorry for my pathetic and rambling attempts at description here, I'm ignorant of most of the proper terms for the lighting effects etc. Anyway, while I'm off on this tangent, Kingpin: Life of Crime (modded Quake2 engine) was the only other FPS engine of that era that had built-in albeit also primitive lighting/shadowing like that IIRC.

Hi, you can see what other Unreal Engine games this supports here: www.moddb.com/mods/unreal-directx11-renderer-for-ut-ug-rune-and-dx/downloads/unreal-directx11-renderer-for-ut-ug-rune-and-dx I can't see Undying on there, but the dev may be able to make it compatible; unless of course it has been modified too much.
I understand what you mean about the flashlight thing, you can see something similar with the lights from vehicles in Battlezone 2 (1999), the lights only illuminate 1 polygon at a time - rather than a smooth moving light effect. I think it's related to Gouraud Shading? - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gouraud_shading
I think a lot of game devs took the Unreal Engine and modified it a considerable amount - Bioshock looks way beyond UT2004 but is on the same base Unreal 2.5 engine as far as I know.

    • @darknovismc367
      @darknovismc367 4 года назад

Unfortunately I didn't manage to port the renderer for Clive Barker's Undying because the developers didn't release public headers for this game which I must link my code against.
I tried hard to reconstruct the headers by myself but there is too much missing information.
This game has software shadow calculation and draws them like polygonal objects, unlike modern shadows are fully hardware generated by additional rendering to the depth buffer from the light's perspective.

How did you get directx 11 render to work ?
I followed the instructions on moddb and it doesn't work properly i get "D3D11Drv.D3D11RenderDevice (failed load)" under preferences.
I can't even launched the game after downloading the HD textures either.. currently having to use xopengl or d3d9.
Any help would be great :)
    I used version 1.6.2 of d3d 11 from moddb.
    HOW TO INSTALL:
1.Copy the following files from the Common folder: D3D11Drv.int , Effects11.dll and d3d11drv folder to game /system folder.
Remember to delete previous version of d3d11drv folder.
2.Copy appropriate d3d11drv.dll file depending which game you have installed (from Unreal Tournament_436 folder or from Unreal Gold_226 folder or from Unreal Gold_227i or from Rune folder or from DeusEx folder) and a tessellation.cfg file to game /system folder.
3.If you are launching the game for the fisrt time then select D3D11 Renderer.

Yep. Quake II engine games were notorious for this, but it's common with anything that uses vertex system. Basically due to lack of model skeleton, so you get that weird jiggly effect on some models when viewed up close. Kingpin had it the worst... the more detail there is, the more pronounced the effect, which is why models in that game looked like they were made of wobbly jelly, and why the effect is much more noticeable in UT now that the detail's been bumped up so much.

What's with the wobbly inflated-baloon-like models lol. (just look at 5:47 WTF)
Also this HighRes texture pack removes native advanced multi-layered detail textures, so in the end textures end up looking worse up close.
Besides they really clash with custom maps that use non-default texture packs (which are 90% of them).
There's hardly a point to any of this, aside from DX dll itself.

    • @314Reactor
      @314Reactor  5 лет назад

There's still work to be done with the models etc. But given that is DX11 on a 20 year old game I'd say overall it's pretty awesome. As for the textures I've not seen any visual degradation myself vs stock - I'll fire up a vanilla UT install and check.

    • @SinaelDOverom
      @SinaelDOverom 5 лет назад +1

@@314Reactor IIRC modern DLLs for Unreal engine were available for quite a while.
Those detail textures are peculiar thing, specific for Unreal Engine 1, that I have not seen in any other game engine.
Regular detail textures are a mask laid over original texture when you get up close to give it "facture".
Unreal engine does not stop at one layer however and keeps layering and combining detail textures via its own brand of procedural texture generation (which it also uses for most of its incredibly optimised particle and texture effects) infinitely, and blends them together in such a way that the texture stays sharp and crisp all the way, no matter how close you get to it, even if that is much closer than the game itself allows you (possible with CCMDs).
It has several textures and layering algorithms for each material (metal, concrete, wood, nali temple walls, holographic displays, etc.). It's really amazing stuff that is not seen today sadly, as it is not compatible with PBR on its own, and nobody bothered to write something similar that would be.
It looks nice and feels very organic in the low-poly environments of Unreal/UT.
High res textures disable that effect for some reason, and IMO do not look all that good on low-poly environment (not to mention clash badly when you play user map that has custom textures).
Here's an example (not UT, but another game on the engine, technique is the same). i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/096/424/ef4.jpg

@@314Reactor @314Reactor You seem to be in contact with the coders. Can you give them a prod and run the (thief2 etc.) idea past them? Also mention OpenGL just in case the are up or it. Even if they say no, at least they wold be aware _(and might change their minds if they realise more people are coming back to games like this)._
You see, people are switching linux distros now _(because ubuntu ends 32bit support in april 2021, and also slackware 15 is on its way)_ and so it is a good time for them to develop the ut2004 to catch that audience. There is a graphics-cards "Crisis" (crypto) via shortages at the moment and so older dx11 games are being played more and, for everyday people (and even some nerds), nobody can get a vulkan (dx12) card and a realistic price other than some low-power nvidia1030 etc.
Therefore, OpenGl games are being run more at equivalent levels to dx11. As an indicator of this, I was talking Tim Skillman (see his youtube videos) and even though his pi3b engine 3D graphics can handle more modern 3D formats, he is also putting in collada file support when I mentioned people are going back to old projects they have made because of that retro (dx11 and opengl equivalent) graphics standard the are still using on account of the crypto videocard shortages.
I'm also talking with some people who are setting up their own ut2004 server. So you see, ut2004 is getting used again (and other games of that era).
It would be nice if mdk (or mdk2) and Sin were games that would run it but their engines are different I believe). Likewise for soldier of fortune etc. A good thing about the patch is that it can improve alien swarm graphics via the mod version whereas the standalone game won't do that.
If you want to, I think it would be cool if you made a video showing the list of games that use the (Unreal and) Unreal2 engine and so you could ask the audience what they think of such games having the mod for graphics _(e.g. Tom Clancy games, Parah, Postal2, Red-Steel, Surfs-Up, StarWars Republic Commando, Ragnorak)._ In particular, what I would like to see is "Open Season" so that it can have fur-effects (like black-and-white2 had). It would create a showcase for other such games using those fur-effects. People might even make a conkers-bad-fur day mod (like the xbox360 version, with fur-effects) but not censored (authentic n64). StarFox (gamecube etc) total-conversion would likewise work that way. A tony-hawks (with skatepark level editor) would be cool. I'd like chu-chu rocket as multiplayer.
You seem to be the go-to-guy for recent unreal mods in terms of multiple videos. You can do it!
