This is probably one of the rare instances where there’s a movie from Disney/Pixar where someone did NOT die. This movie was so cute and relatable and I loved it.
the scene where Mei's mom finds her drawings was excruciating to sit through because it partially happened to me. well not the embarrassing af confrontation part but just the discovery and asking "WHAT IS THIS" part 🤣 she once came across my deviantart page and forced me to close my account because she thought it was full of shady people solely based on the website name. also occasionally she'll find my sketchbook while looking for something to take notes on (BUT WHY MY OWN NOTEBOOKS? PLEASE!!)
I think a lot of us had that 'helicopter parent' point in this time period where they were snooping in every damned thing you did, and there was also the risk of something embarrassing being found. I'd like to think that, for those of us expecting to be parents of teens someday, we'd treat any accidental discoveries of 'those drawings' as "Oh, they are starting to feel stuff! I guess it's time for The Talk."
My stepmom ripped up my drawing and said it's my fault for not doing my schoolwork. It hurt more that she threw it in the kitchen garbage where it cannot even be salvaged. I don't know if that hurt more or getting a manga I got from a friend as a gift being ripped in half in front of me.
my mom isn't that strict to me cause she knew I'm that quiet kid in school so I always hv no complains coming from teachers but my sister? once my mom caught her calling on the phone with some boy and they literally went out of their way to find who that was, till yeah my sis started to rebel and sneaking out at night frequently during her highschool days that I'm sick of her frantic. honestly, all this helicopter parenting might seems normal to us asians but when you take it too far, your child might do something even worse to get their freedom.

Warning Spoilers. So I, a 28 year old guy, really resonated with Turning Red. Like, so much that I've been having to work through a lot of messy emotions it brought to the surface. I had a protective mother, maybe more so than Ming. I was a "gifted" kid that could never really live up to the expectations. Especially once my ADHD got worse in my preteen years, which the panda reminded me of a lot. In fact the scene where she's beating herself up and begging it to just go away hit me really hard because it was almost exactly the same as my reaction to my ADHD getting worse. "Why am I like this? I wish this would just go away!" I also realized that the "cure" has parallels to ADHD medications. "You can cut out this problematic part of yourself to better conform!" (Note that back when I was diagnosed the medications available had some nasty side effects, so I never used them. They've come a long way since then.) So the ritual scene, with her struggling over the choice and the visualization of ripping yourself apart to fit other people's idea of what you should be, hit me pretty hard too. Top all that off with the "I'm not going to regret this... Am I?" Since I chose not to use the meds I've had a lot of struggles. I wonder sometimes if it was the right choice. So just... Yeah. A movie hasn't caused me to reflect this much in a long time. Basically I found it super relatable and it's quickly becoming one of my favorites.
Ohhh wow, the parallels between both are so many. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Now that you mention it, I loved the movie because it can work as a metaphor for so many growing pains situations. It's brilliant.

Btw, yes it actually is in part about getting her period. The jokes weren't coincidental.. Gross red monster. The way she's walking stiffly when she's in her bedroom? I can confirm that's how we walk when we're trying not to move too much to prevent...an "accident". "Prevent any accidents." Curling up in the fetal position because it hurts. You can even make a case for the extreme emotions thing, cause a lot of us can attest that extreme emotions tend to make it...worse, let's say. And the friends neutralizing the panda? A way to show that having friends around to help you through it when you have an "accident" can make it less embarrassing.
I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie when I saw the trailer; and after watching it, I was more than satisfied. It was cute and hilarious as heck! Generally a fun watch.
For anyone who didn't know, the number 4 in Chinese has a close pronunciation to the word death which is why its considered unlucky. Its the only thing i remember from my high school Chinese class.

How Pixar made a movie about a movie about a teenager publicly humiliated for her body and desires and it did NOT turn out like Carrie is remarkable. Carrie murders her school. Mei tells you to love yourself at the end. Even the little tykes can see it. OMG I cannot get enough.
it was really refreshing watching someone watch this movie with just genuine love and excitement for it. i continuously see a lot of people reviewing it and addressing its controversy (regardless of whether they enjoyed it or not) and it nice just seeing someone love the movie for what it is. that is what the experience should be instead of being clouded with so much discourse around it! absolutely loved this reaction, very grateful for this video

Even though some dumb reviewer thinks the movie isn't relatable for those who aren't from that culture, that the movie is just for a certain niche, I personally found myself a lot in Mei-Mei. I was not a little girl in the year 2002 (even though I was 15), it was only recently that I finally understood my trans identity and accepted my femininity, even if I did not leave the closet to my family or my friends for the moment. So the part of Mei-Mei that hides who she is or searches for herself, 100% relatable to me. The part of her that draws sexy things too, at the same age as her. And even though I wasn't a fan of boy bands, I was all for Spice Girl at the time. So there you are, I'm not a 13yo little Canadian girl of Chinese origin going through puberty, but the 34yo French trans woman that I am can only recognize herself in her.
I really miss the days of receiving a mixed CD or mixtape of all my favorite songs that was put bunch of time and thought and, now you can just put together a playlist and send it off. @@inkfeather1152 I said I’ve been hearing different opinions, not that RUclips would control my life🤨
i think you should give it a chance. most people that i've heard saying they don't like it usually point to the cringe and secondhand embarrassment as the reason why, but story wise i think it's pretty solid. if anything, it will let you see into a culture that's not often portrayed in media.
PLZ WATCH ARCANE!!
Credits should all go to Pixar, not Disney.
