  • I purchased a $300 grab bag of ancient coins from Spencer Miller / millerancients a friend of mine who deals in ancient coins, and he said he would sit down with me and talk through the coins I had bought. I learned so much about what I bought, and love the history and understanding of how these coins were transacted and their significance - so thankful to have been able to buy these coins and add to my collection (or sell some of them) in the future.

    at 9:16, Antoninus Pius did leave Rome on a number of occasions due to problems with the Parthian Empire in the east stirring up trouble. The misconception that Antoninus Pius never left Rome during his reign is untrue and was invented when the Historia Augusta was written about the time of Constantine I. The Historia Augusta is at best an unreliable and heavily biased source and should be taken with a grain of salt.

    Besides my other comments, this was pretty good. You didn't do terrible paying $300 for that lot. That being said, there isn't anything really amazing or unusual in there. Solid start to collecting ancient coins though!

    If you paid $300 for this lot, you got a reasonably good deal. Many people think all ancient Roman coins are rare and expensive, but this isn't true. Even nice silver coins can often be purchased for $30 or so. But beware of buying these coins on places like eBay. I'd estimate over half the coins sold there are counterfeit. NEVER buy from a source outside the U.S.! It takes a little time to learn the various denominations, but four sestertii equaled one denarius, and 25 denarii equaled one aureus, the standard gold coin of the early empire.
    One interesting fact is that while the silver coinage was increasingly debased, Roman gold coins remained of high purity until the end of the empire.

      I do buy Roman coins on eBay but I’m very carful who I buy from there’s a huge list of fake ancient sellers. I buy from trusted sellers about 99% of the time. the best place for me personally to buy ancient coins is at a coin show.

    Very nice purchase of ancient Roman coins for a great price. The "Divina Faustina" denarii are pretty stunners. It´s obvious that the bronze coins mostly are more corroded than the silver denarii and antoniniani. Thanks for this very interesting and informative vid, Christian ! Greets from GER, U.

    One coin in, and you're not even going to say Pergamon, just "the city"? With ancient coins it is pretty important where they are from. Don't treat your audience like we won't get it or be interested. This is a good chance to teach!

    "Most ancient coins come from hoards.." this is the opposite of what I hear from experts like Aaron Berk and others, most ancient coins are loose finds of just one or a few coins.

    • @Caligulashorse1453
      @Caligulashorse1453 2 года назад

    • @markp44288
      @markp44288 2 года назад

      @@Caligulashorse1453 Maybe, but Berk deals in a lot of pretty high end stuff, in fact they just moved the Eid Mar Aureus which just went for auction for something over two million, can't remember exactly.
      Hoards are far less common to find than loose coins are.

    • @cammobunker

      This is true, many coins are found as small groups of maybe 10-25 or so coins, probably hidden in bags or small clay jars as there were no banks back then. More than a few are singular finds. It's rare to find a clay pot full of hundreds of coins all hoarded together. It does happen, but it's very unusual.

    • @chrisfreeman4876
      @chrisfreeman4876 2 года назад

      "Hoards" has different meanings. Most are found in small lots of coins taken from circulation that were a person's savings. No banks back then, (only way to give money to someone and keep it safe was to pay them to protect it), so most people simply buried their money in a pot or bag somewhere that only they knew about. Keeping it in the house was a good way to get stolen from. However, if the person died, no one knew where the money was and it stayed in the ground for centuries until someone found it. Aaron, (who is a great guy, I know his father better though), is probably using "hoards" meaning larger hoards of important coins sometimes found. So, while someone might call 20 coins of miscellaneous coins a "hoard", the hobby only calls larger groups of the same coin, usually in great condition, a "hoard".

    Ancients are so counterfeited that unless you really know what you are doing, I'd suggest buying slabbed coins.

    • @kotto7877
      @kotto7877 2 года назад +2

      No need for that. As with any other kind of numismatics, buy from dealers that have a solid reputation. Simple as that.

    • @chrisfreeman4876
      @chrisfreeman4876 2 года назад

      @@kotto7877 Agree. Stay away from Ebay, stick with decent dealers, and no need to buy slabbed. Btw, for ancients, the slabbing companies specifically DO NOT guarantee authenticity. Most people do not know that. They do for modern coins, but not ancients.
