  • The Beauceron is a French herding dog with a short coat. They are typical of any other farm dog, serving a variety of roles, from herding livestock to protecting their family and property.
Renowned for its protective nature, the Beauceron is a huge dog that weighs between 70 and 110 pounds. Only a relatively few dog owners will be able to cope with their athleticism, agility, and versatility.
It is not a good idea for a first-time dog owner to own a Beauceron. They are intelligent, forceful, and self-reliant in their own right, some owners would say tremendously stubborn. If he needs to protect his family, he's got the size and strength to do so comfortably.
When it comes to training and socialization, he needs a firm hand. For the first three years of his life, they retain their puppylike behavior.
    Beauceron Personality
Beaucerons are generally self-assured, intelligent, determined, and watchful canines. As a result, they tend to be reserved among those not part of their immediate family or territory.
They are quick learners but also prone to acting on their own. The Beauceron, despite its confidence, should never be aggressive. They are kind, but he's rarely will they back down.
The Beauceron is a steadfast defender of his family. When they grow up around kids, they can be terrific companions for them. Keep in mind they are a herding breed; therefore, they may chase or nip the heels of children.
Behavior like this should be controlled and trained out of the dog. Beaucerons would do best in an adult-oriented household with children who know how to treat them respectfully.
Beaucerons are tireless dogs. If you are an energetic person or family who enjoys jogging, bicycling, and hiking with your dog, then you won't go far wrong with a Beauceron.
Just about any canine sport will suit them: agility and flyball are just two examples. These dogs are also great candidates for tracking and search and rescue. Beaucerons that are bored will develop some unpleasant behavioral issues.
    Beauceron Training & Socialization
To maximize a Beauceron's intelligence, speedy learning abilities, and determination, begin socialization and training as early as possible. Praise and food treat rewards are all examples of positive reinforcement tactics.
Beaucerons tend to think for themselves, and you will need to have this in the forefront of your mind during training sessions. When you ask them to do something, be prepared for pushback to see whether you mean what you say.
It would help if you were forceful, fair, and consistent to be effective. Don't employ force or raise your voice on any dog, but never a Beauceron.
Immediately you bring a puppy home, begin training them. As long as you teach them, They're like a sponge and will soak up your training from just eight weeks old! Waiting till they are several months old before you begin training means you'll have a more stubborn dog to contend with.
If at all possible, enroll him in puppy kindergarten classes by the time he's 10 to 12 weeks old so that he can be exposed to as many people, dogs, sights, and sounds as possible while still a puppy.
    Beauceron Grooming
Due to the Beauceron's short, double coat, grooming him is a breeze. A light shampoo and a bath every three to four months are all that is required. To keep their smooth coats free of dead hair, use a natural bristle brush or a rubber hound mitt a few times a week.
The Beauceron sheds a little, but it sheds a lot more in spring and fall. Brushing them more frequently throughout the shedding season will help keep the amount of loose hair in your home under control.
    Beauceron Health
Dermatomyositis, an inflammation of the skin, muscles, and blood vessels, has been found in Beauceron dogs. Allergies can also be an issue in the Beauceron. Gastric torsion (bloat) is another possibility.
Try to choose a breeder that participates in the Canine Health Information Center. Before a breeder can be CHIC certified, they must submit heart and hip testing from the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) and eye tests from CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation).
    Conclusion
The Beauceron is a powerful, independent thinking dog, not first-time or casual dog owners. They can make fantastic family companions if the owners fully appreciate and understand the needs of the dog.

@@glockcarrier it's animal abuse and men's ego. People who have their beaucerons or dobbies' (or any other breed) ears cropped, don't deserve these dogs.

@@carolinemarchand4743 It's not animal abuse, they are in no way handicapped or does it bother them. Dogs in wilderness have pointy ears. Floppy ears are a deformity that evolved as dogs became domesticated.

In this case, I would recommend you to talk with rescue shelters in your region, so in case they found one, they will call you and you will save one more dog soul

@@ChihuLife I wouldn't recommend a beauceron from a shelter for a first time owner... I have one, my friends have one, I have know Beaucerons from a long time (I am French, live in France at the moment and they are well known there). There are wonderful dogs, but very sensitive, if they have been mentally damaged by their previous owners, they could have become unpredictable... so if you are already used to Beaucerons or Malinois, GS, I would say 'why not' but if you are a first time owner, probably better to be extremely cautious if you go to a shelter... My beauceron's sister was adopted by the wrong family, we strongly suspect the husband was beating up his wife... the dog was returned to the breeder after less than a year cause she was attacking men when they were coming between her and her female guardian. Her breeder (very small legal declared family breeder) took her back. The dog had hardly been going out, she wasn't socialised (which makes every dog but guarding breed in particular, very aloof), she didn't have a strong muscular body like she should have from running, Anyway the breeder started all the training again from scratch, the dog improved over the months. The breeder started to be confident enough to remove the muzzle in public and one day, during training, without warning she attacked the trainer... But if the shelter knows about the dog's past and they are confident he/she is chilled, then go for it. Remember they need between 1 to 2 hours running out (forest, fields...) every day, with canine friends it's even better!

    • @GiantsBeauceronsRugby
      @GiantsBeauceronsRugby 2 года назад

@@darrentaylor4022 it’s actually to do with predator interactions. If they have to protect the flock or herd from wolves, if a wolf gets hold of the ear the dog is as good as dead as it has full control of the head. That’s why you’ll see all livestock guardians with cropped ears unless they have huge manes like the Great Pyrenees. Catch dogs get theirs cropped due to risk of tearing in the hunt. Infection is a new made up reason to keep people happy with tradition. Certain breeds like the Doberman it was purely for intimidation factor

@@darrentaylor4022 no that's not the reason, in the past it was to prevent injuries when they were protecting the folks against wolves. Now in most cases, it's just their owners' stupid ego, because they think, rightfully unfortunately, that they dog looks more intense without their ears.
