How to map on a Mavic 2 Pro with DJI Pilot

- !!!HEADS UP!!! DJI Pilot PE hasn't been updated to allow for mapping services after the November 28, 2022 update.
As of filming, this was done on version 1.8.0 with an offline cached map. After this video went up, we tested with DJI Pilot (not PE) and the mapping services worked, the app was able to connect to the drone, so try that (but remember your mileage may vary!)
Here's a fast cut of our feature-length video for this month explaining how to map with DJI Pilot on the Mavic 2 Pro, using the original Smart Controller.

Doesnt' work anymore. They disconnected the mapbox. You can't get live maps anymore with the pro 2 or pro zoom. :-(
yes they are obliging us to purchase much more expensive drones for the same work...F****ers
@CoastalDrone I got the problem with DJI Pilot app - it disappears every restart of controller. After reinstall it turns to keep all the data. Any solution...?
Thanks for the video, it came in time, I have a question though .. I'm using the regular controller and the DJI Pilot PE doesn't open on my phone but DJI Pilot is working fine, so will it connect with the Mavic 2 Pro or do I have to figure out a way to make the PE work?
Pilot PE will no longer download maps until they update it - so if Pilot connects and you're able to use the drone and all features then it should work as long as you understand it's not an officially supported process.
Unfortunately DJI has stopped supporting the DJI Pilot PE App and it will no longer show any maps or connect with the Mavic 2 Pro.
That's correct. Pilot 2 still works in this scenario...for now.
How did you load Drone Deploy on the Smart Controller?
APK side load.
ive been waiting to use my smart controller and mavic 2 pro for a couple years now for mapping. does it reaLLY WORK? watching full video now
Unfortunately not with Pilot PE anymore. Pilot 2 possibly.
@@CoastalDrone the mapbox is down to in a DJI Pilot 2 app android version
considering a mini 4 pro. i wonder if it can do mapping? ha
@@CoastalDrone
possibly using unsupported waypoints. working on a video about it actually.@@funkyboogiee
Ian. So many questions. How did you get google play store on the old RC pro. And I saw spexi there as well. I got rid of my smart controller for my M2P so I could use an apple tablet and have access to all the great third party apps. And now I have the new RC plus with the Mavic 3, so far I can’t find any apps that are integrated with the M3. I use the pilot2 app with my M300 and it has flight planning built in.
You can try google-installer.en.uptodown.com/android for installing the play store on the older Smart Controller, not sure if it will work on the new RC Pro (black). So far the Mavic 3 has no third-party app support until an SDK is released, and if the RC Pro doesn't support APK installation, likely you won't get Pilot 2 on it either....but that's something worth trying.
First of all, thank you for making this video. Very informative. Are you able to give some details about how you cache the map, because I can’t seem to get the Mapbox map screen to do anything. It’s just black and I can’t figure out how to get an offline map into the pilot or app. Cheers.
Unfortunately right before/after this was shot DJI stopped supporting PE. You can get the same results with the non-PE version of Pilot - link in description.
My pilot pe app is showing “disconnected” when I go to mapping. What does this mean? I’m using a mavic 2 and smart controller
Disconnected from the drone? Is it powered on? You don’t need to have the drone on while planning a mission.
@@CoastalDrone yeah drone was on, the map screen to plan mission is just showing black and on the top left it shows “disconnected” and idk how to connect it in the app, when I open my DJI go 4 app the drone is connected and able to fly, but when I switch to pilot pe it doesn’t show flying capabilities
Depends on what you're using, but you might have to ensure that Go4 isn't running in the background, as the USB port gets locked to the app and prevents multiple apps from communicating with the drone radio.
@@CreateAnomaly try Pilot instead of Pilot PE, see comments in the description.
The base map won't populate for me. Is there a work around or is it over?
It’s over
I have a problem: I used the beta version and it was fine. I recently updated to the actual app and it wont show the map at all.
Update: I found the normal DJI pilot app but now the smart controller does not show the app if I restart or turn off the smart controller. I still have the file and reinstall the app every time I turn the controller on and everything works fine. That's just weird.
@@donkey1912 i got the same problem with DJI Pilot app and smart controller. App disappears every restart of controller... any solutions?
@@666MVK I have just kept the file for the app in my download list on this smart controller and reinstall it every time I need to use it or turn the controller off and on. Installation takes about as much time as it would load the app and it does have your saved files
what software do you use to process the data?
Metashape
Can i use dji pilot app on phantom 4 pro plus v2 ?
Sorry wouldn't be able to test as we don't have one here anymore.
@@CoastalDrone may i know, what version DJI Pilot non-PE version do you use on mavic 2 pro? i can't find out the download link dji pilot on description
Will this work with air 2S
Sadly don't think so. Follow-up video soon!
I downloaded it and the map doesnt show anything its just black.
That’s expected now with the shutdown of mapbox support.
How can one Map a large area... lets say 20 plus acres.. You cannot keep VLOS... Which would be in fact a rule breaker for having your Basic or Advanced... What is a person supposed to do?
You can break larger areas up into segments and fly them VLOS, or use visual observers that can extend your range. The visual observer must be fully briefed as to their responsibilities, and have the ability to maintain constant real-time communications with the Pilot in Command.
@@CoastalDrone I was under the impression the visual observer was to be in direct communication with the Pilot. So the Pilot is allowed to be in a cell phone call with a Visual Observer?
@@stabila9706 yes, as long as reliable two-way communication via phone/voice chat/radio is provided.
How did you get dronedeploy on ur smart controller?
APK install from the MicroSD card
@@CoastalDroneI tried to install the APK by downloading it through the Lightning Browser, it cannot parse. Can you run the DroneDeploy you installed?
@@jani.radebaugh it's been a while! Unfortunately we don't have that controller anymore so I couldn't test again.
