    I can't say thank you enough for this video. I got one new for $900, more than I ever spent on a gadget so I was a bit apprehensive about taking it apart until I found this video. The only thing of note, after all screws were removed and all sides pried out, the center around the battery area was VERY stubborn and I felt like I was going to break something. Nothing broke but it took a good tug from the other direction and heard a snap. Hopefully that helps someone else not panic like I did at first. THANKS AGAIN!!!!

    I changed to a SSD and a new battery, but had some problems and with a good magnifying glass realized the battery connector wasn't making correctly. Fixed that and everything was great. It came with 12GB memory so nothing need there. I have two of these both I7 (his and hers). Good computers.

    Thanks so much for this video. It was a big help for me. As I was working with the TP550LA, rather than the one you were showing, I had to adapt a little, but your video was great start. One note, for anyone working on the TP550LA, vs. the TP500LA, the battery connection lifts up rather than pulls out. Also, the small socket that holds the small ribbon cable that goes over the HD enclosure flips up. The rest is the same as here.

    I just recently bought an auss transformer flip book and I just wanted to say your videos are awesome! You have a brilliant camera to capture all the steps you do and your verbal tutorial is outstanding! You Sir, have earned yourself a subscriber.
    If I may ask, I was just wondering how would I go about to clean the keyboard? I'm thinking of popping out the keys but I'm not sure if I can do that. Your advice would be very much appreciated! ^^

    • @GadgetClass
      @GadgetClass  9 лет назад

      ***** I haven't done a video on that. The Chicklet Style Keyboard on these doesn't get dust and hair trapped under the keys as much as the older style keyboards. You can easily take a can of compressed air and blow out most of the dust, then take a Q-Tip with alcohol to clean inbetween the keys. If you want to actually remove the keys be very careful as the little plastic hinges and clips that hold them in are very fragile. Here is a video on key removal on a macbook which might have some useful information. Don't count on the hinges and clips being in the same places on your keyboard as they are on the MacBook:

      1 more question I have though is that my ASUS Transformer Book Flip came with a 24GB SSD but it doesn't show up in "My computer". When I emailed ASUS, they told me that I am not supposed to use the 24GB SSD at all because it was meant to speed up my system, rather than to be used for storage. I was just wondering whether this is true? You seem like an expert on computers haha and I would love to get a second opinion from you

      @RyanLee1986 9 лет назад

      GadgetClass That is odd. My HP has a dual bay for RAM and can support up to 2x8 for 16GB. And I am fairly certain ASUS is of much better quality than mine. Mine is just an AMD Elite 5545m quad core clocking at a measly 2.7GHz, AMD Radeon HD 8510G, and a 15" touch screen which I never use but works well. Only paid $500 for it last February. I am happy with it, but my HDD is starting to kind of hang up and making me worry.
      So I have been watching your vids like a hawk trying to figure out how to back up all my goods on my drive. Not sure if I should buy an large external for backing up, or how hard it even is. Mine also has a D: dedicated for recovery. Not sure what that does either besides recover. And I have no clue how to make disc copies for restore, or an sd card like you used would be even nicer. I wish I could hire you to get me up to snuff and help me with these things! Cheers to you for the time you take on trying to educate us, appreciate it greatly.

    • @Bmp1113
      @Bmp1113 9 лет назад +3

      +GadgetClass I have a Q551LN-BBI7 with 8GB ram installed factory. When I purchased it I was under the belief that 12 gb is the max. However when I use the Piriform Speccy APP it says I have 2 total slots. 1 used and 1 free. I haven't opened my unit yet to check. So if I order the 8 GB card and open it up should I find an empty slot and end up with 16GB total? Is the Speccy App confused and I don't actually have an open slot? or when I open it up will I find an empty slot? Thanks for a great video BTW.

    Excellent tutorial. I just purchased the Q551LN a few days ago at BB and have been searching for a good SSD to replace the 5400rpm existing drive. I want to keep the optical drive in place and don't want to use an external HDD. On the link you provide for the 500GB EVO, that page also shows a 1TB EVO SSD in the same form factor. You see any issue with going with the 1TB over the 500GB?

    • @jefft8029
      @jefft8029 9 лет назад +1

      Disregard the above question. Got the 1TB drive and the 8GB memory and they went in with no issues. Worth noting that the the Samsung EVO SDD comes with software migration utility that was a snap to use. No need to get something like Acronis, but you will need to get a SATA to USB cable. This laptop works so much more nicely now. Thanks again for the excellent tutorial.

However when I try to put the HDD in the system with the SSD windows seems to reboot from the HDD as it always starts up by doing the whole "welcome to windows" message. I was wondering if you knew why this might be happening and if you know a workaround for this issue. I know its been awhile since you made the video but I figured you would be the best person to ask. Thank you for the tutorial anyways and if there isnt a solution I'll just leave it how it currently is, SSD and empty optical/HDD area.

    I have the Q551LN, and was thinking about upgrading the memory, you said in your video to get the 8GB chip, is 4GB internal, so adding an 8 gets you up to the twelve. or do you use the old 4 chip with the 8?

    • @GadgetClass
      @GadgetClass  9 лет назад

      You will be replacing the 4gb chip in the memory slot with the 8gb to give you 12 total

    I bought this laptop a week ago so I'm reluctant to start opening it up already to have a look myself. I want to ask about the airflow of the fan. Obviously it's blowing heat out the back, but without opening it, it isn't obvious where it's actually drawing in air from. Seems sort of like it's just letting air 'leak' in from whatever crevice can be had. Having looked into it better, do you think it would benefit from some thing slots or holes being drilled into the bottom panel where the fan sits? Obviously it set's pretty low to a desk, and in your lap these slots would probably be blocked, but by the looks of it, it can use all the help it can get.

    • @GadgetClass
      @GadgetClass  9 лет назад

      Actually they call it a vertical fliw design where air is both entering and exiting the back. Seems to work well to me.

      You may have missed a plug when putting it back together. Open it back up and make sure everything is plugged in securely where it was originally.

      bcoolnow You have a different setup with on-board 24GBSSD. I chose the BestBuy Q version on purpose, so that I could do this upgrade. Your Internals Should Looks Like This Picture:

      You will be able to do the SSD and Memory upgrades only. If your internals look any different than that pic, let me know and maybe send it to me so I can update the post.

    • @bo64hellfire
      @bo64hellfire 9 лет назад +1

      nadavkunievsky The user guide, or startup guide says to have a technician or trained personnel to swap battery. That tells me yes, it can be swapped, and all you need is a part number, likely on the battery (Google that number). The average person just isn't willing to open up expensive electronics, and manufacturers don't encourage people doing so. Otherwise, just a few screws and a plug.

    I tried using a Crucial M500 SSD and had the same problem about the bios not recognizing this drive or if it does fails booting. Tried cloning and didn't work. Tried Windows 10 lean install and couldn't detect drive.
    I decided to order a Samsung 850 and hopefully that will work. Sounds like the bios is picky when it comes to drives.
    Does anyone have any wisdom about getting a SSD to work in this ASUS Q551LN. Any bios settings need to be changed? Does Windows 10 clean install see the Samsung 850?
    Update
    I put a 250GB Samsung 850 EVO and it worked perfectly without any issues.

    • @GadgetClass
      @GadgetClass  9 лет назад

      +Larry Spero This model is indeed very pickey. Something about the UEFI BIOS configuration. I think it needs a manufacturer's BIOS update but doubt they wil put one out.

    GadgetClass, I have the Q551L from BestBuy and my wifi has been randomly drooping and showing no connection. It lasts from 30 seconds to two minutes and then comes back on. I m in college and it drops me when I am in class taking the weekly online quiz.Others around me have no problem with their computers. Would it be easy to change the wifi adapter card? Can you do a tutorial on that? Do you think that is the problem?

    First Good Video. I have a memory question. I'm thinking of upgrading memory in my TP500LA. I presently has 8GB and you say it's upgradeable to 12GM. From your description in this video it sounds like you can insert multiple chips to achieve the desired amount. (ie for me adding a 4GB). I was just in my unit to replace the WiFi card. I made a quick look at the memory slot, but it appeared to only handle ONE chip. I got side tracked and have sealed the computer back up before making a detailed 'look see'. Does this unit accept two cards, or do I have to find a single 12GB memory chip??

    • @GadgetClass
      @GadgetClass  9 лет назад

      It has 4GB soldered to the motherboard. You only need an 8GB chip to max it out. It has to be a DDR3L or Low voltage chip. This is the one I have been recommending:

    Hi, I have purchased a new ASUS laptop (ASUS X555LA laptop) with 1 TB HDD (there is no SSD) and 8 GB RAM. I really liked your video and helps me understand how to replace existing SSD with a bigger capacity SSD and how to replace DVD-RW with additional HDD. Is it possible for me to let me existing HDD remain in its slot as it is and if I can use DVD-RW space to add an additional 128 or 256 GB SSD and if there is a way that my Windows reboots via SSD instead of HDD. Hope I have been able to explain that well in terms of what I want to do.

    • @migueltremblay9440
      @migueltremblay9440 8 лет назад

      +Kevin Smith it should be possible if there is a y compatible caddy for what you want to do. Also windows wont magically boot from the ssd you will have to install it on the particular drive if is not already so make sure to do a backup of all your files.

    This might be a dumb question, but can you switch out the DVD drive for a bluray drive? Im going to be buying this laptop in the next week or so but i really like watching movies. Another question that im wondering is how does the dvd drive work when the laptop is on its stand mode? Im going to guess having the disc spin upside down or horizontal isnt going to be good for it.

    • @GadgetClass
      @GadgetClass  9 лет назад

      BostonGamer24 Yes you can swap for a BluRay Drive. You will simply need to use your Bezel on the new drive as shown in the video (don't forget to slice off the little piece of plastic).There are many reports of Windows 8.1 having issues playing BlueRay due to Sony's BluRay Copyright stuff. If you install Cyberlink powerDVD or use "WorkArounds" You should be fine. I recommend this one:
      www.amazon.com/dp/B007ILC49Y/?tag=cr38er-20
      Some people have had issues with the other popular brand Panasonic drive.
      The disk is held in place by a lock so it can be used in any position. Of course perpendicular angles are best, but since it is locked in there is no issue.
      I highly recommend getting the one with onboard video: TP500LN or Q551LN:
      www.amazon.com/dp/B00LWB5OR0/?tag=cr38er-20
      And order a set of touchscreen protectors for it:
