You missed one really good Cetacean Observation: They paid a little homage to S2 & Pike. Adira tells Detmer as they walk by in their EV suits, “Fly Good”, which is verbatim the very first thing Captain Pike ever tells Detmer.
I took the replicators making steamed bananas as a nod to Lower Decks. The very first episode has Boimler working on a replicator spitting out hot bananas that burn him.
Book said Zoras name nearly a dozen times while on Discovery. Lol she’s always listening, so them being masked didn’t make sense. I did like the Easter Egg for Lower Decks with the Steamed Bananas
The difference between Control & Zora, Control was only fed threat fear/response data, it was programmed to be paranoid/calculating, always expecting the worst. Zora sees the crew interact as people, she see's their Humanity. She cares for them in a way.
You can’t tell me that the replicator making steamed Banana’s isn’t a reference to Lower Decks “Banana hot”. Also down for Jet not immediately calling security alert when she finds Tarka and giving him the chance to kidnap her.
This definitely felt like a table setting episode. Like, they needed all these characters to have reasons to be in specific places with specific things to do so when the finale hits they’re all lined up appropriately. And those episodes are always boring and never flow well. With all the dodecahedrons and weird dust I’m getting definite Kelvan vibes. Might be a red herring but…yeah.
I wasn't wild about the episode as a whole, but the mission was absolutely worth the risk - they discovered the 10C communicate chemically, which is crucial to making contact. Also they witnessed the 10C's world being destroyed much the same as Kwejian, which is a path to empathy. Also, note to the writers: Its not a Dyson Ring, its a Niven Ring. Come on guys, Niven even wrote for Star Trek.
Niven Rings! Yes! I was screaming at the screen. Also, if they're looking for 10c artifacts, wouldn't the rings, the massive massive artificial constructs in space that are themselves artifacts be a better place to look for alien stuff than a rock? Lazy, illogical writing, fuzzy, contrived plotting. Mcguffins everywhere.
@@NobbyNobody I mean, I guess? I figured the Rings to be uninhabited energy collectors, otherwise Discovery would have made a beeline for the life-signs.
@@chasethevioletsun9996 Exactly my thought at the time. You have a) a dead planet, b) rings that someone built around a star. They chose the dead planet. Huh.
At first i had the same reaction. Enough getting to the 10C, let’s meet them, already. That was my reaction to reading the plot description. But the episode brought me in and i loved it.
Missed the sneaky reference to Lower Decks, that the replicators we're throwing out "steamed bananas", like the LD scene where the broken replicator was popping out "banana hot" over and over 😄
Another Cetacean observation: the ‘steamed banana’ replicator malfunction is a call back to Lower Decks season 1 ep 1 where Boimler was trying to fix the replicator making ‘banana, hot’ !
You're right. I was watching the episode and the whole time I was wondering if they really have time for a side quest. Plus, Picard was so strong that Discovery looked pretty inferior this week.
I assume it'll come out that if they hadn't stopped at this planet they'd have no idea how to use the pheromones to communicate. a better order would have been: 1 someone detects this planet but they decide not to stop. 2 first contact goes terrible because they cant understand a thing. 3 discovery has to race back to the homeworld to gain context before book can catch up and shut the dma down by force or it effects earth. much more tension. same plot points more or less.
Could be 10C who set up the Dyson Rings, but that destroyed the life on the gas giant and the crew are going to try to make first contact with completely redundant information.
I usually agree with your ups and downs, but not this week. I thought this episode was both fantastic, and necessary. With Earth and N'ivar in the firing line they can't afford to fuck this up. Learning as much as they can about the 10C, who they are, what they're about, is critical. Going in completely ignorant would be a recipe for disaster.
I felt the problem was mostly pacing, & them standing around too relaxed. But other than that, it was totally necessary to be as well prepared as possible rather than blindly leaping into first contact with a powerful unknown, this "side quest" was totally justified, & i'm sad that fewer commenters here understood this.
They presumably work in a vacuum meaning they have their own air supply - so why wouldn't they always be sealed as such? why can't they hire a science consultant?
Whoever wrote that is a moron. They're spacesuits, not respirators for spraying paint. Completely sealed letting absolutely nothing in. How that got through production is beyond me.
1. Alien super-pheromones penetrating a 32nd century space suit was pretty hard to believe 2. With programmable matter and detachable warp nacelles, I think space suits would probably be outdated too (I'm looking at YOU, TAS personal shield belts). But it gives a great sci fi feel so this one I can overlook 3. For cetation ops, maybe a half nod to Dark Frontier where they used similar armbands to evade borg detection
I got the biggest LOL from Reno's line about replicators shooting steamed bananas. Took me right back to when Boimler was trying to fix the replicators on the Cerritos. How did you miss that?
Saru speaking so many languages would seem like a moot point when you have universal translators. And Zora should be able to translate at least as well, probably better.
They also then get the dots to go back and actually do their mission. They should have collected all the samples while there and they should have started travel before the emotional moments. These people have an emotional moment just because they are on an elevator or get coffee.
Ouch you missed a lot this week... Down for skipping over how Tarka (sp?) caught the engineer (I forget her name at the moment) got captured, because they skipped it in the episode you skipped it in your reivew? And there isn't a cetation observation for the replicator banana gag? That HAS to be a call-out for something? Ugh, and I can't remember the other thing but there was something else. ugh.
Very fair, even generous review. These season long arcs are interesting - but this one seems really, really drawn out and somewhat 'smothering' in that there is no 'B' story that carries over at all.
this is the 5th time Tarka comes up with something to improve Book's ship. that's really annoying, at least to me. and apparently Tilly just had to leave so that Adira can say all her lines now.
My problem with the scene involving Book and the General is that she is a military officer. She is trained to follow her orders, even if she disagrees personally. The military relies on this discipline. A military organization could not accomplish much if every one allowed their personal opinion to override their orders.
Not necessarily a Cetacean Observation, but when Reno was told about the steamed bananas, all I could think about was Boimler trying to fix the replicator and all it made was "Banana, Hot".
I what Star Trek to go into deep sci-fi. I mean I want an alien to look like the ones in the movie “Arrival”, or something strange and unique like that (and then don’t spoil it by having them be able to transform into humans).
First time I’ve done this with Discovery but I gave up half way through the episode. Should have done so after 5 minutes after the ridiculous slow motion walk to the shuttle bay just to transport onto the shuttle, which they could have done individually from anywhere on the ship.

I would have struggled this week to give any likes. Even when the trailer was released earlier this week I felt we were in for a weak episode, that's bad when it's coming to a seasons end

I agree, a nod to STLD
