Winter Meditation (a rewrite) upon waking don't forget to shake your dreams out along with the snow from your ears think of winter as having longer nights not shorter days laying down on the floor big as this house note your bloods internal wind circulating, stretching the dawn further into infinity the random reward can leave you empty strolling once again through a drift trying to release this hunger
Thank you for sharing your editing process. I used to think poems were never edited and if you edited them it would change the original meaning😅 Then when I realized people did edit their poems, I couldn't figure out how poems could be edited at all. Seeing your process gave me an idea how I could edit my own poems 😊
Impeccable advice. To write poetry well is tough. I wish more good poets were willing to talk about their craft and the evolution of their work through the editing process. Good luck with the collection. I'm preordering it as soon as the announcement is made!
I think its an interesting video, but there's also something about keeping the raw, unaltered inspiration of the moment. Poems have something sacred for me when they are received as inspiration, and I feel often coming back to revise them with a rational approach can actually alter its original essence and transmission.
Yes, editing is such an important, often painful process. Depression inducing, in my case. I don't fully agree with the notion of making the last line the most powerful. Not all poems look back at the experience when it's already been concluded, but instead some may start the journey with the speaker when the ending and conclusions are yet unknown. In which case an ending with a bang might undermine the ongoing-ness of the narrative/point.
Its a wonderful idea to have these poetic musings intertwined with meditations. Reminds me of a blend of Haiku, contemporary creative writing and zen. Somewhere at a crossroads. A balcony from which to gaze passersby stream.
This was so helpful. I've come across this idea i have to change the world now and have to do it with poetry. Lol know what I mean, multidimensional, girl? Aha
My new poetry collection, GHOST HOUSE: amzn.to/3qLs5xM
I know you will likely not see this, but can we talk
I like that some of your advice boils down to: play. A lot of poets overestimate the emotional "purity" of the first draft.
Winter Meditation (a rewrite)
upon waking don't forget to shake
your dreams out along with
the snow from your ears
think of winter as having longer nights
not shorter days
laying down on the floor
big as this house
note your bloods internal wind
circulating, stretching the dawn
further into infinity
the random reward can leave you empty
strolling once again through a drift
trying to release this hunger
a break was so needed after "shake"
yes the snow instead of the water! that makes sense :)

It helps to have talent!
