I went through an almost identical analysis on engine choice for the Series 5 that I'm building, and came to exactly the same conclusion. If money were no object I would probably be using a 915iS, but I just don't have the budget. I looked really hard at one of the auto conversions, as well as one of the other European aero engines, but both had reliability issues that made me nervous. I think we both made the right decision!
I like your motor choice. Prop information also helpful. I was hoping to go with Dynon, but you just talked me into Garmin. Your constructive criticism in past videos of Kitfox has been helpful - just so I know what to realistically expect. Really looking forward to the performance numbers that you report with this engine.
It is good to hear the practical details if you jump up to the 915is. I really want to use that engine to get access to high-altitude locations - even though that would be fairly rare. Questioning whether I should do it or not.
The 915is can be configured for fixed-pitch prop. Also, you don't have to buy the fancy engine monitor. You can just a switch to control the start power. Still quite a bit more expensive though.
Great content... fine at 1x speed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and decisions and advice. Your plane is looking great. By the way, you should be able to add new inspection holes when you find you need them... I recall my A&P adding a few he needed when ADs came out on my Decathlon spars years and years ago.
I would strongly recommend any iS engine owner out there buy a stock box! Those lane lights will drive you nuts because you most certainly will get them on the ground and in flight and being able to diagnose them on the fly will be a real headache saver. Also, the 915 iS does quite well with fixed pitch propellers. Check out the 4 blade E Prop that Zlin is using on their Savage Norden. They are getting great performance out of that combination.
Shooting paint really need a shop knows what they are doing. The gun, filter, compressor, tip, adjustment, speed, pressure so many factors. Most never see minor runs, or fisheyes.
TAPE: Ive used pinstriping tapes with a lot of success. You put down the widest you can bend the curves with. then cover with masking tape like you did.
You have the fuel flow orientation right, inlet is on the right side of the engine and outlet is on the left. It definitely matters, there's a pressure regulator just above the outlet side. Also, double check your check valve coming off the aluminum manifold next to the fuel filter. The fuel pump outlet goes to the manifold, then in the event the filter gets clogged the check valve opens at a pressure over (17psi? something around there). I see the arrow on the check valve facing toward the manifold, and if that means that's the flow direction it's backwards. Also, are your JEGS fuel lines nitrile or PTFE? PTFE is a rock solid choice for them, but if they're nitrile it can seep fuel fumes inside the cabin. The lines might have stainless braiding but aren't actually stainless where the fuel runs through them. Also, PTFE lines are pretty much lifetime lines, they're impervious to all fuels and don't need to be replaced except if they get damaged somehow. PS- the 912is does great on the STi. Pair it with an airmaster constant speed prop and you'd be even more stoked, my neighbor has that exact setup and gets great performance. Airmaster also has been making a constant speed prop for the 915 for a few years now that ends up being almost half the price of MT, just some info there. Great job on the build so far you'll be in the air soon!
Evan, you sound like you could probably explain to me why the fuel line "loops" and has a "return line" back to the header tank. Is this to help avoid vapor lock, or to help with pressure regulation? Are they necessary with fuel injection? Do carburetors sometimes require them? Thanks in advance.
@@GlennSisson it’s for fuel injection, you need to feed the injectors with enough fuel and pressure to do their job, so you run continuous fuel through the rail at a constant pressure of about 45psi for everything to work nicely
I gave away all of the Tesa tape I had two full boxes and went back to 3M, Tesa has never proven that good for me, glad you didn't have more tape issues. I am an anal profectionist .
Can you please let me know how you are getting on with your long two blade 79' Laga prop? I need to start thinking about ordering stuff like this thanks
I'm a geologist like Randy Marsh. And total cost will likely be under but close to the cost of a rebuilt super cub. I don't intend on doing the accounting anytime soon or I will probably melt lol.
I’m starting to believe people in aviation aren’t that well bright. You do know that there’s a light green tape out I believe by 3 AM that you can bend it in a circle the size of a nickel and it doesn’t peel or come up stretches made for what you’re trying to do use it all the time in the motion picture business but I can’t remember what it’s called go to a good automotive paint shop I’m sure they have tons of it that crap you went through with all that blue tape on top of the duct tape and all that other junk sometimes it’s better to do a little research before you jump in satellite learning to swim before you get in the deep end....
Love that paint scheme, and you will be stoked with the 912iS 👍
Thanks man!
I have two sisters. There is zero percent chance they would help me paint my plane project.
Congratulations.
Thank You. It is great to hear you talk candidly about stuff you've dealt with and how you did so.
Wow your sister did a great job. Love the panel too! Looking very good.

Nick hooks it up man.. He's legit when it comes to quality.. solid guy solid craftsmanship.

Love the paint scheme……3M fine line tape is what you need for masking off different colors or stripes
The main thing to me is, you are making good progress on a very nice build.

Thanks for the inspiration! I am planning to get the same one this year 🚀
Great to see what you’ve accomplished. It’s really looking good. Can’t wait to see you fire it up for the first time. 👍
Beautiful paint scheme!!!
Paint scheme is awesome! You made lots of good choices, congrats, you are getting there
Haven’t had time to get all the way thru this video yet but Awsome choice on engine! This the way I am going to go as well!
912iS will work just fine fly my 912ul @ 7000ft+ on 34’C South-African days and it works fine. Good work
Keep it in progress.... vraiment jolie cette avion!

noted. I'm going down to visit DUC propellers on Friday to see what they have in store.
@@7KiloFox Garmin just released 8.81 software for the G3X touch that can read the fault codes while flying so now the Stock box isn’t a necessity.
Nice work!
Use 3m fineline tape. Sold in many widths.

Thanks for the insight on the fuel runs. I noticed that check valve was backwards yesterday and will fix before this is through. Jegs lines are PTFE.

If there is a next time for paint any automotive fine line tape works great. Tamiya, 3m, uline

Great starter prop. I would prefer to have the Sensenich 80" 2 blade when it is available.
@@7KiloFox Thanks
3m Fine Line tape 1/4in, then 1/2in would work.
What is with the gap between the fuselage and the rudder. Appears as it the gap grows wider at the bottom.
I'm working on the tail light wiring. Just finished it today and got that buttoned up.
You live in FL? Are you planning on putting floats on? That’s what I’m planning on doing. Which part FL you in?
Central Florida. No floats at this time, maybe if I move to a lake or something. Happy building!
