There are absolutely ultra's and trail running after hip replacement! I had a total left hip replacement. After recovering and taking it slow, I've built back up to 40-50 mile weeks, and longer when prepping for anything over marathon distance. The key is this: The doctor will say "don't run" because it extends the life of the implant. So what? If your health suffers because you can't run, what's the point?? Instead, take it easy, make sure you're doing strength workouts, and build it back up. If it does deteriorate over time, again, so what? Have a revision done - At the point you'll need it, the technology will be even better. Don't let a replacement stop you!

Classic used to be when you have a hip or joint replacement, you are locked in for at least another unless you get hit by a bus in the meantime.
The newer items are better, but the join of the new material is still not 100% like the original item it replaces, more so when it comes to impacts.

@@mitchellking4988 You don't seem to understand the point. If your health will suffer from *not* running (which I said in my original post), then you should stay fit and run. But hey, misinterpret it however suits your agenda :)

It was quite emotional to see Pete being wheeled off in a wheelchair when the race was over. It confirms some of the fears as a viewer in this story. But it also paints a picture of Pete's mental battle. His desire to be fit and finish the race, versus his body which made him unable.
Then the video ends with that absolutely absurd cliffhanger... what a character that man is...

Never thought I'd identify as anything, but a climber. The social circle can be amazing. The adventures stunning. I stopped climbing and have a new identity that doesn't cause further damage to my body. I decided that I wanted to do something more noble with my life than chase limestone. I got over it. I have a tree nursery now and harvest all of the tree seed out in the wild.

Beau your films are always inspirational and I feel blessed to be following you. Pete I understand the pain, my left hip was replaced. To part in anything of that scale and achieve the distance you did was truly amazing. Looking forward to the next instalment 😊

Love the spirit of our Ultra running community. I’ve been doing this for 10 years and thinking about not being able to is a bit sad and scary. Great, great go at it. I can’t wait to see the next part!
