One of my best friends actually wanted Piranha Plant in Smash ever since Brawl. I actually cannot believe that he actually got his choice and still plays him as well

Pirana plant is my favorite fighter in ultimate
Plant's kit is fun, and despite his shortcomings, I really love playing as him. It also feels like a lot of people don't seem to know how to deal with him.
Same i wish he was better than he is rn and like you say that people dont know how to deal with him is very true since i take advantage of that and punish people for not know certain small aspects about plant
Well yeah. There's a meta within the meta. How much experience your opponent has with fighting other characters has a huge influence on the game !

Yah fr. Lol. He's simple but if you can read your opponent and cover options well you're good. I love playing as him because no one knows what to do lol. I don't even have my mains in elite smash but I got banjoo and plant to elite no problem lol.

As a Plant main, I find this video very well made and surprisingly accurate. I'm relatively notable (though mostly in the online scene) and I am one of the few people that play this godforsaken character. There's just a few things that I think are important to mention. Poison (at least as I use it) is a conditioning tool. Given it's lasting hitbox, it lends itself to be very useful for baiting options from opponents. Simply put if they choose to respect it, it leads to stage control, but if they challenge then choosing the correct defensive option also leads to potentially big damage. I think it's important to note this because it gives poison a specific purpose rather than just a projectile that does big damage.
You also mention Down B (I will be saying LSS) as a good move, however I think this is not the case. The move albeit strong has very few uses outside of a matchup check simply because plant risks a lot by doing it. Before you can even turn it, there is 18 frames completely in startup lag and once you do start turning the opponent only needs to jump over and they are guaranteed a big punish.
Last thing is you mention how each of the 3 core character designs (Swordies, Zoners, and Brawlers) are bad MUs for plant. I think it's important to mention that Swordies actually are pretty good for plant. Swords overall have relatively slower frame data and get the most from the mid range. Plant is a very strong midrange character and thus actually has a ton of favorable situations against them. These MUs often become volatile though as both sides abuse each other's disadvantage. Brawlers do kinda suffocate plant very well and zoners are very good into plant so those were accurate. However Plants only winning MUs are actually a mixture of all 3. Imo he beats Shulk (Midrange vs a sword that gets blown up easily), Olimar (Poison stops all pikmin), Puff (Antiair vs aerial fighter), DK (Midrange char with brawler and swordie weaknesses.), Ice Climbers (Ptooie trading stops all combos), Bayo (Similar to ICs but Bayo is more consistent in neutral but is aerial based), and Robin (Although they are a zoner, their lacking speed means they struggle at controlling the pace of the game and Plant can abuse that.)
Other than that though great video. I have played solo Plant for 2 years and I do think that despite his weaknesses his trapping style means that the better player more often than not will win anyway regardless of MU. Though since I'm part of the collegiate esports scene I have been picking up Olimar to counteract Plant's MUs. I do think what draws most to him is that at lower levels Plant can give results because people don't know the MU and his kit is very simple once used to. IDK though, I enjoy the character and even though he won't be in the next game (If there is a next) I think his inclusion was clever and I will enjoy my time with him now.

Down B sucks but mostly people decide to jump over it. That's why I release it when it's at that 45 degree angle. Hard to time tho but it covers jumping option well. Still sucks tho but I tend to use if from time to time just to keep them on their toes
The buff i always wanted was for side b to come out faster. It sucks when someone hits u right as youre bout to release a fully charged one and u lose it. There are times where i know im gonna get hit but i still tru and get out that side b because i know theyre gonna stand in it and take a lot of damage

Since smash has had multiple iterations maybe you can do a series called "why everyone dropped..." comparing the the strongest version of a character (for example shiek, fox, or bayo) to their current one
This is a great idea especially for chars like bayo or shiek that went from borderline broken in smash 4 to rarely seen.
Well the answer for most of those is probably just “they were strong then got nerfed into the ground”

This is the best plant description I've ever heard. I've mained plant for the entirety of ultimate and I run into these issues all the time. The regular attack buffs were definitely helpful, along with using the sling shot tech, it definitely has improved plant but hasn't changed a lot. Regardless of that, there is no one else in the game I'm nearly as good with. I play against good people a lot and piranha plant is always my ace.

Been a plant main for a few years now. I agree with a lot of the video, but I feel like you undersell his punish game a lot. The best way I have found to compensate for his lack of good approach options is going for reads and punishes instead. His neutral b is slow to throw, but the active hitbox appears faster than most people expect. Knowing where that first frame of damage is you can punish bad approaches. His down b is also good at catching weird angles in the neutral, as most people only expect it at the 90 degree intervals.
He definitely needs some loving tho, especially when characters like Samus and snake are allowed the ranged tools they have. It makes plant feel underwhelming.

As someone who mains Plant, I'd say you described it perfectly and it kinda makes me sad knowing that at least in ultimate, he won't get anymore buffs so his nuetral won't get to be useable for his play style. It's so bad that I don't even have fun playing as Plant anymore let alone the whole game in general.
Maybe some tech with slingshot will come out but yeah, really like the kit but plant lacks in some departements

I feel the same way. I love playing Plant, and I've tried others and I always end up drifting back to Plant. Problem is I'm not good and neither is Plant. Online makes me angry and fighting bots isn't super enjoyable for me, so I've long since dropped Ultimate-
Regardless of whatever piranha plant’s issues are, I’m glad they’re in the game. I like having goofy characters.

All I can say about plant is I love this guy and there just those moments where opponents can’t do anything he will always be niche but it’s a niche no other fighter has
When he was revealed, I just thought it was kinda funny, and then when I tried him, I immediately loved his move set. I’m also a big fan of Mario baddies, so that’s a plus. My only problem is that he’s a heavyweight, which can make him feel sorta stiff sometimes when moving around. Either way, great video!

7:55 Honestly, him waiting for the foe to make a mistake actually kinda fits in line with how Plant is in Mario. They are great at catching you off guard when you make an error or overextend ya jump. Making you slow down and think a little more.about your jumps intead of charging your way through.

So as a Plant main one strat that I feel like few people are ready for is actually using the poison as cover to obscure what you're doing and then charge a down B. This way the opponent doesn't know where you're targeting and if you can read where they might go you can surprise them with where you pop out!

Absolutely agree. As a plant main, it has been hard to really put into words why I love this character and still recognize his faults. The first time I decided to main him, I just thought would be fun to do so because of how funny he was a character, and I have never looked back since. The amount of times I have played people who complain that his specials are too good makes me laugh, because deep down, I knew he really wasn’t good. The best answer I could ever give is that his neutral isn’t good, and this video really helped spell it out. No matter what though, I will always love this character. Appreciate the video my guy, look forward to more videos!
In Smash 4, i was a Corrin Main, i loved the character. but when smash Ultimate came out, corrin just didnt feel the same, so i struggled to find a new main. that was until Piranha Plant came out. Ever since then I've mained plant. they were my first character i ever got in Elite smash and the one ive used in Tournaments the most. but i havent play much smash over the last few years bc another game took its spot. League of Legends, which is how i found your channel. i always loved watching your videos and when i saw that the first Why no one plays was about Plant i was so happy. i cant wait to see what else you do on this channel
I love PP to this day it’s still my best character in smash but I’ve been slowly drifting towards Samus, mainly because I generally love the character in and outside of Smash
Oh how I miss smash 4 Corrin. The speed, oh god... In the air or ground it was unmatched, and the side-b was so quick (glad they buffed it in some patch in Ultimate). It felt perfect as a frame trapper and a precise sniper.
Let's hope Leo reignites them by developing further
I miss bayonetta /: everyone thought her 0-death combo was cheap, yet it required good timing and skill and extremely satisfying and hype worth in tournaments. Now we have characters like “hero” who just get basically hacks and one shots anything because he gets powered up with no skill involved etc. rip bayo, I still play her but she’s not the same.

@@andrewaguayo115 It did not require particularly good timing or skill, it was pretty easy to execute, easier than Kazuya nowadays and people also complain about him so.

@@VarsIII Piranha Plant was able to walk around in a pot in Mario and Luigi Parters in Time.
I believe you also forgot an archetype in Trappers, although it’s also reasonable to say that trappers are usually a subtype.
My reason for making the distinction is that Plant is actually more of a trapper than a Zoner. He has no zoning tools whatsoever, but he can trap extremely well.

Not really, when Palutena said in her Palutena's guidence, "quiet or she'll hear you", she is referring to Viridi, cause Palutena knew that Viridi would go on a tangent about piranha plants, who does hear and goes on a whole thing about the many different kinds of piranha plants.
I still think that Plant is genderless but probably doesn't care what gender people refer to them as, I myself most of the time refer to Plant as a male.
Really good vid man. I main plant and a thing I noticed is that plant is about 90% reads and 10% off stage gameplay because of how good plant is off stage and I noticed this because I play against my friend in smash just about every day is that the more you can predict what someone is gonna do and for most characters in the game this balances out for the characters because if two people can read each others the exact same it’s still just as even as before but for plant it’s much more benefiting. But I saw at the end you asked for personal experience from plant mains so I thought this might help ;]
Plant being so heavy makes sense. Have you tried lifting trees at Lowes or Home Depot (or what ever your country has for home improvement stores)?

After playing him once I was immediately hooked and have played him more than any other character in the game. To me this character is perfection. Woulda loved it if Petey was here instead of a base p plant but the memes from that more than make up for it

As a Belmont main, I wish more people played plant. I've never won more in quick play than that week he came out 😂
Yeah, Plant is overly reliant on his "Step 2", but as the metagame currently progresses through a more "punish game" focused phase, I think Plant can definitely make some waves by a dedicated player who pushes his advantage state to its fullest potential. But yeah, the neutral is *rough* for Plant compared to his high tier competition. Brood in Japan has shown that Plant can do work, but I don't know how much of that success comes from matchup inexperience or just Brood being a great player in his own right. (And he's not the most active player, as far as I know)
I'm predicting the next character in this series to be Pichu, Lucario, or Duck Hunt. All mildly respectable characters, at least, but barely ever seen nowadays.

This video was extremely well put together. As a plant main myself, I can comfortably say your absolutely right on damn near everything.
Plant has by far some of the best anti-air and trapping potential in the game. Plants advantage state is spectacular. It's just their kit doesn't allow them to put others into the scenarios where they plays best.
Idk plant is just fun lol. Idk if I'll ever get bored of them.
I like Plant a lot in 3 or 4 player Matches cause he can use the chaos for his advantage ^^
But yeah in 1on1 its hard to play him ^^
I recently saw an interesting interaction with Plant's poison cloud that I question why people don't do more often. Place the cloud closer to the middle then use it like cover to obscure your character model. Charge up your side special and no one will be able to see it coming as its far too fast to just react to...at least for us normal humans. If you're curious where I saw this trick, a youtuber named King of Skill has a montage video of Plant and its great.
In my experience as my main, he's fantastic at disrupting group scuffles
In a one-on-one it's better to play more evasive, using poison to build up percentage and then ptooie or down-B to knockout

a lot of her weaknesses are kinda similar to plant's, especially with her projectiles. they're slow and mainly meant for trapping, so using them to keep out rushdown characters or get in against zoners is a problem sometimes. there's obviously differences as well and I'd love to see your take on them

The plant mirrors most of the communities for other Switch games. Flavor of the week and then largely forgotten outside of the few remaining fans.
Fun fact: There are other alts that feature the warp pipe, they are just differently colored like yellow for one of them, referencing how warp pipes usually come in other colors!

Of course, the Plant wasn't a fighter that I expected to appear in Smash, but when I played him and tested his moves for the first time, it really put a big smile on my face. I've been playing many Mario games during my life-time as well, but I've never thought that the Plant actually has so many moves from different games. And by experience his moves for the first time was a really big mind blow for me. Pirahna Plant is my absolute favorite character in Smash history. Not only because of his mindblowing moves, but also because he's really cute, awesome and hilarious. I only wish he also could got his own stage. Otherwise, the Plant is perfect. :D
Plant is the best character because his recovery move is called “piranhacoptor”
I had an idea to buff his horizontal projectile game
His Side B poison cannot be used a second time while the poison is active, instead you spew a tiny wind box.
What if that wind box could effect the poison cloud? And then you could blow it closer to your opponent (I'd say half the distance of FD)
The greatest why nobody plays would be banjo. Literally everybody was hyped, a ton of people said they'd main him. Yet nobody plays him now. It's all around his kit not his character. Despite his popularity, his kit/playstyle was so unfun and bad that nobody could even endure to play him seriously.
I feel like plant has a lot of hidden potential. He's my main, and I still find new, incredible things with him all the time. He just takes a really unorthodox playing style to make work. And, when he works, he DOES WORK SON!
Took me a second to realize you're the guy who made those League of Legends videos with the same name, and I'm proud to say I main characters you've done in both of them! (Piranha Plant & Skarner)
I main Piranha Plant. He hits like a truck, and is hard to knock. His hidden bonus is that, if you do good with him, he tilts other players big time ("I can't believe I'm loosing to a joke character!"). He's really good at not just aerial, but area control in general. The paths his spike ball can take cover a surprising amount of area. Spitting one out and launching it quick will frequently hit someone coming at you from the other side of the arena. If you have time to set it up, the low ball launch can travel across entire small stages. He's a fun character to play.
I really like playing Plant. Not because he's particularly good, but he's goofy and fun and I can't help but have a smile on my face. His moveset reinforces this goofy fun. He's very much an indication of how Sakurai intended Smash to be; not a professional competitive game, but a fun time to be had with friends.

There's only one way I've made this guy work. Play unpredictable with. Do stuff that seems weird and far away from the normal, yet still effective
As a plant main his biggest problem is that you only have like a few options and they do work if the opponent doesn't know how to deal with them but after a few matches they know how to deal with them and plant doesn't really have anything else besides those few options
my head cannon for why plant was put in is some guy on the dev team was making him on his lunch breaks or something for practice or fun and sakurai walked by their desk one day and was just like....."hmm put it in"

I love facing piranha plant as isabelle in elite smash. I once got 5 shield breaks in one game by pocketing his projectiles the player kept mashing
Now it's the ice climbers' turn. They are characters that many people say were weakened by not having their grip failures, but the reality is that no one showed the true potential for the Eskimos.

I’m predicting next video to be “Why nobody plays ICs”
Ice Climbers wasn’t too well received and is quite forgotten as an NES game (although I’d love to see a reboot), they play very fundamentally different to every fighter and they’re ridiculously difficult to play at top level, having to put more effort in with Desync tech to get results than other characters like Luigi or Lucina.
The upside and the reason why I main them however is that they’re extremely sick and fun to play when you put in the effort to learn.
I’m going to firmly “plant” my feet in the “ground” & tell you... I do not main Plant.
So THAT'S why Nintendo made Piranha Plant a freebie for early buyers.
I think I can guess, while he excels at ledge trapping other top tiers like Min Min and Snake do it better, the latter is also just has heavy. Also his meme status didn't help as well.
Edit: Finished the video, I agree with how he isn't able to get his opponents to the corner. I feel like his gameplay is just done better and so as long ad Snake, Pac-Man, and Min Min exist he will be irrelevant
I am interested to see if corrin will ever be a why no one plays as there were a few more secondary pick ups after shadic, Leo, and neo started to do well with them.

Plant is fantastic to play. He has a satisfying unique move set that you can see the locations where they got the inspirations for all of his move at Unfortunately I do feel that the tracking fireball could’ve been a coool move for him to have but his back air is still so much fun
Plant is just such a fun and creative character
I do find it pretty funny how good Piranha Plant is in Amiibo tournaments. Mainly because his poison breath isn't recognized by the AI, so they'll often stand in it for long periods of time
We all thought it was either gonna be waluigi or captain toad just to see a plant finesse everyones hopes and dreams
The recent melee mod hewdraw remix (aka HDR) really fixes the issues plant has in vanilla ult and shows what the devs could've done to balance the plant
The main reason I picked up Plant the day he came out was because I thought it was funny. But then I actually enjoyed playing as him. Idk if I'll actually get anywhere competitively with him but damnit I'm having fun playing as a potted plant
As a plant main, I agree with the zoners problem, most of them can occupy a ridiculous amount of space in the battlefield, but at least most of this projectiles go to certain ranges and distances, all but Samus (Dark too), their projectiles can travel through the entire stage and at least for me, it's hard to confront them, especially spamming samus players

Man I haven’t played ultimate since before joker released. I do remember playing plant though had o lot fun but maybe thats cause of my love for spikes.
Also half the skins are in pots the other half pipes. The pots have a slight angle on their edges and hole on the bottom.
They could have add anyone else but they add Piranha plant. If only it was Waluigi or Shadow the Hedgehog or Krystal from Star Fox.

As a plant main I like to throw out his poison and hide in it to charge up his down B and then the opponent doesn’t know what move I am doing in there either. Also nothing is more satisfying thank throwing out poison watching your opponent sheild it and then running up to grab them it does serious damage!

I would be interested in a "Why everyone plays Wolf" video. Normally high usage stems from ease of use but in this instance, he is very hard to master and use effectively if you don't fully know what you are doing. Sure, he is cool and "hype" but that can't be the only reeason
What? Wolf is the second easiest character in the game after Lucina, that's why he's popular. You don't even have to play wolf to have a wolf. Just point your attacks in the direction of your opponent, there you go you learned how to play wolf.

As someone with a Plant secondary, I think plant is underrated in the current meta
The low mobility and hard to win neutral can be avoided by trying to control space with Plant, rather than trying to get an interaction. You try to force people to ledge so it's easier to get them offstage and then, once they're offstage, you ledge trap them to death.
I honestly think that plant could be a low mid tier if more people were playing him, but unfortunately that isn't going to happen
PLANT GANG!!!! I hated plant when he 1st came out, with every fiber of my being. but i learned the play the character. He is my homie now and i got merch in my room with him. he has alot of weird tricks to him i am still learning to this day. i do think people need to dive into characters more
His effectiveness probably dips as the skill level in matches increases

I think other than just gameplay, he doesn't get play because he's subjectively, not as stand out as the rest of the cast. I view characters in games as one of three types - character, avatar, or copy-paste. Characters are actual named characters such as Mario or Link, distinct visual design, and distinct stories. Avatars are fill in characters that allow for choice in visual representation and often flexible story. Examples are Miis, Villager, and Inklings. There's also the space between these, avatar characters, such as Byleth; you could reasonably call Byleth a character or an avatar. Plant though, fits the third group. Copy-paste. It's not a character or avatar, but rather, a repeated concept throughout the series, with no distinction from one to the next. Petey Piranha is a character, but Piranha Plants themselves are not. And that makes them just a little bit difficult to identify with and appreciate on a deeper level. Of course it doesn't apply to everybody, but it's often the case that people develop a somewhat emotional attachment to their mains. Copy-pastes might be fun to play, and a player might develop an emotional attachment to their kit or play style, but it's hard to establish a deeper emotional connection to them than that surface level "the kit is fun.". People got excited to see named characters and avatars announced as DLC, because of the emotional connections to those characters in games past.
Oh yeah I totally agree with that, I mean even if piranha plant was the best smash character I think it would still has a minimum playerbase cause the character itself isn't interesting.
I play Pirahna Plant and I find his playstyle to be fun but like you say very bad, he's slow and his projectiles are not very good compared to other characters! but I am loyal to the Pirahna anyways so I will keep playing him
