Really surprising to hear publishers say dumb shit like "Nobody wants Sci-Fi" when games like Halo were massive back then. I'm glad Warframe's on this path now and not on the path of being publisher controlled, but it's also kinda shocking how publishers continue to be completely out of touch.
Macros20 Not to mention that games like DOOM and Unreal were both Si-fi as well. Si-fi and action have been super popular since both of those things existed.
I think that fact that the "popular/ top-tier" games were sci-fi ones like Halo is exactly the reason why publishers wanted small IPs to be completely different. With big budget games you have to go for the trends sure, but with DE's pitch? They were probably hoping to set a new trend, and that involves the risk of pushing something new. That's just an opinion though.
Well, not to mention the far bigger beast that was Call of Duty. Once publishers saw the money that thing was eating, they were all "I want one o' those".
It would explain why the publishers forced the modern-era RE-style concept onto Dark Sector - both military shooters and zombies (via The Walking Dead, I believe) were really popular at the time
Nobody said that they didn't want Sci-Fi. Nobody said there wasn't a demographic. What they said was it was risky, inconsistent, and generally not a risk economical for publishers. I can't blame them, and I'm sure DE didn't either.

MR25 Grand Master here. I had no clue
just how close to sinking Warframe was back when I first started
playing in 2013. I bought my hunter founder pack for Excalibur Prime,
and eventually upgraded to Master. I wanted to get Grand Master but
kept convincing myself not to cause that was a lot of money. But
eventually I caved, cause I had a stable job and a steady source of
income.
The fact that the founder packs
basically saved DE still boggles my mind when I think about it. I
suppose there's a sense of pride in knowing I helped, but I try to
never forget where I started. A clueless little Tenno who was amazed
when I saw my friend had an ice mod on his melee. A clueless little
Tenno who saw Dual Ether and immediately went for that cause it
looked so cool, then discovered it was crap. Lol
6154 hours on steam so far, and still
going strong. Where my endgame is finding terrible weapons and making
them good with rivens. And finding brand new players and taking them
on 50 wave defense missions for fun. I wish only the best fr Warframe
in the future, and after seeing DE handle different situations, I
believe we are in good hands.

Vyporware this is so relatable, its basically what me and my friends do now, either comparing the shitties / best riven we can find, or just randomly helping new players.
Of course. Warframe is a game built upon equipment choice, and coop. As much as there may be selfish pricks who want to be the hallway heroes, or elitist meta weapon Tridolon farmers. There is still a constant stream of new players coming into the game, who have no idea what to do. I find enjoyment in showing them how to play, explaining things and generally watching them light up as the gears start clicking together when they begin to get the hang of something.
People who complain about the game being boring probably never tried helping other players, or using anything other than Tigris Prime/Akstiletto Prime/Atterax
I tell people, Warframe has over 400 items to use. Don't ask what is "the best". Use what is weird, or fun. Use what makes the game interesting and enjoyable.

It's wild how these docs can often be about games that I would have absolutely no interest in, but after hearing the stories behind them - personal stories, little to do with mechanics or systems - it encourages me to actively seek them out. Keep up the incredible work Danny.

Warframe is an incredible teaching tool on player progression and community engagement. It's design is almost drug-like, it's player retention so good most day-1 players still play the game on a daily basis.
It was an awesome game.
I've been playing since 2012 and the game is better than ever. Highly recommend it to everyone.

This really is a rare example of a passion project succeeding.
There is a quote from Ratatouille that says "The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations. The new needs friends". Sticking to your passions, your visions and having the discipline to never give up on them, to keep striving towards then no matter how long it takes is the main challenge to see them realized.
DE earned every last bit of their success and I am happy they can inspire budding developers. Because these new talents will follow the trail they blazed. Especially since, predictably, publishers have learned nothing since then, their close mindedness will keep them from truly growing.
Really fucking stupid what the gaming market had become, where some office junkies determine what they think we should play.
I'm glad they risked going their own way, people came to them and DE thankful enough worked with them to create one of the coolest games ever, and keeps working with us to make it even better. This industry became too much about just the quick cash injections and was not anymore about the games itself and I think a lot of people were fed up with it. I certainly was, I hated what happened with MMORPGs, I hated what happened with popular game franchises and developers after big publishers like EA got their hands on them, I hated how gaming wasn't about the games anymore.
I think as long as DE cares about us and the games they make instead of just our money we'll have their backs as well. I'd rather spend my money on developers & games that really mean it instead buying into something and regretting it afterwards with feelings of guilt, like I just sold myself out and spread my cheeks willingly.
24:45 You know, as much as you think that publisher that said "you will fail" is an ass or something, I kinda feel like he's the hidden MVP. Because of his honest answer to Steve's question, that the game can't look this good and update much often, Warframe became the game we love today. With high priority in giving players free updates, whether it's a major expansion or frequent hotfixes.
I'm pretty sure this "You will fail" was a warning instead of a dumb taunt.
the reason of "you will fail" is actually the biggest contribution. Steve realised the main issue of his idea and worked toward resolving it
As someone with over 4800 hours invested, it's remarkable that Digital Extremes can keep me coming back, reinventing the property over and over to keep it fresh and compelling.

You guys, that could be over more than 5 years. It's not that much if you consider how old the game actually is.
Unknown Error if you divide it by the 5 years the game has been out thats 940 hours/ 40 days per year. Over a tenth of the total time of the last 5 years. Thats a lot.
To each their own though. As long as they are happy, let them spend their time as they will.
Not really. 940 hours a year is about 18 a week, or 2 hours each weekday and 4 hours each weekend. Obviously, it likely wasn't that consistent, but the amount itself is not that big, especially if it turns out to be Steam time.
"Nobody likes sci-fi" they say. Obviously this is why things like Wing Commander, Mass Effect, Halo, Dead Space and the like totally failed and never became well-known series. And there definitely aren't massive franchises by the names of Star Trek and Star Wars that almost everyone on the planet will have at least heard of.
I suppose the more things change, the more they stay the same; publishers have always been pretty damn disconnected in general.
I love how you got interviews with the people at Digital Extremes. And it's fascinating to see how things started with Jamie Schmalz's bedroom programming going through school. And even how they still have the old demo for the original idea of Dark Sector.
You also has to remember that they were trying to pitch this game at the start of sci-fi in games, back then sci-fi was barely selling and so wasn't worth the money and time to create and publish
I think this is mostly due to games like Modern Warfare, made a lot of publishers think that "Modern/Realistic shooter" was the big thing... Despite that outside of CoD and Battlefield, most of those games fell flat.
The most hilarious thing, is that if you see any top shooter list, usually a huge chunk of them are sci-fi.
Wing Commander was old and forgotten at that point. Halo and Gears of War just started but remember even though they were scifi setting, those games were military shooter at heart. Star Trek and Star Wars didn't have any good shooter games. DE was going for a more weird scifi vibe like Metal Gear Solid which wouldn't work outside of Japan and without the name "Kojima" or "Suda51". Publishers want easy sales that players are familiar with. That means military shooter or fantasy action/RPG. This is not about being disconnected, but about risk management. Publishers don't like risks because they're not in the business of creativity. They just need a product that can sell. Developers tend to have more artistic integrity. DE was founded by a game creator who is still in charge. That separates them from publishers who are headed by investors.
This is why publishers green lit a series of bland brown fps games. They have no vision, their only thought is money
Publishers rely on data. They see examples of sci-fi games flopping (mostly because they SUCKED) and assume the setting is the reason.
10 years and the game is still kicking ass, kudos to Digital Extreme for having integrity and not let greed blind their vision for the game unlike Bungie who gotten a lot worse after they broke up with Activision.

This is incredible! I love Warframe, had no idea they were behind UT and Epic/Extreme pinball... Funny how the studio behind the games that were such a huge part of my childhood are behind the game that's now my go to as an adult.
Recurring theme that I love through almost every Noclip game documentary (Rocket League, Doom, Final Fantasy, etc), the hugely successful games on display came from the skeletons of failed/unreleased games prior. It's been so great that these studios allow you all to show unreleased footage/demos/vertical slices/etc. Noclip is a massive contributor to the newly forming tapestry of contemporary video game history. As it's proven throughout these Docs, great games don't come out of nowhere. Can't wait for Wednesday. Proud patron.

you know when i get hyped on a certain game, and then i saw the NEXON logo? i just sigh and feel sad and "welp.. i cant play it, moving on."
AFAIK, yes. At least, they do in the KR region (where like 90% of the most awesome games we'll never play are).
Also, Nexon KR>Nexon NA by any stretch of the word.

yea.. well i think not IP block per se. during vindictus' closed and open beta, we can play it for almost all the time, way back then they got this stamina thing where you have limited amount of dungeon access thru coins. Then all of a sudden, SEA players cant play in the NA and EU servers for a reason we dont know. So i think they blocked regions?
also when they said they "MERGED" servers and decided to announce that they did global release (or whatever the exact detail because i didnt really care that time) they meant just merging NA and EU servers and they even BLOCKED ACCESS to additional regions where they have regular paying players so they can have space for their assumed influx of players which never happened. You can only play vindictus thru VPN if you played from SEA. the KR vindictus is fine, but you cant understand anything unless you know their language.
The game would have died within months if nexon was tied to it
I'm so glad they didn't gave up. I love warframe, I'm pretty new I have 153 daily logins. I was under a deep depression before warframe......
To be honest warframe pretty much saved me.... every time I play it I forget about the things that are bothering me, I feel happy whenever I play warframe.... i spend money on it because why not it's a master piece.. and I will continue supporting the game... I want to thank everyone in the DE team, everyone who makes warframe possible.....
Same here, i remember i went tru dark times in my life nearing depression and isolation.
But that uplifting Warframe experience helped me alot, i found good amount of decent people to play along with.
You can play wired builds no one plays but still be successfull in game.
And feeling of power you have in this game is awesome.
This experience helped me alot.
btw I didn't spend money on it because i had none.
I recently started playing Warframe, being burned by Destiny 2 on PC and I regret not trying it earlier. I love this game and am fascinated by the success of it!! Thank you for this!!!

Anyways welcome to the game. I will give you 2 goals pick your favorite weapon all weapon can become end game if you have the right build for it. Also reach Neptune because there is a very special side quest in warframe. It’s the most epic side quest in the whole game so I recommend play solo often so you won’t get spoiled by players.
TheDragonfriday I constantly hear about this side quest and how I need to play it, I'm actually not far off from it now! Like one or two short main quests to go I believe I just have something I gotta grind out real quick. I actually pulled the trigger on the prime thing because I really support the monetization and how unintrusive it really is. Love The basic idea of "if you want this thing, there's usually a simple path to grinding towards this thing specifically".
I was actually a Destiny 1 player on PS4 and really had high hopes for PC. I kept myself unspoiled on purpose because I wanted to judge it myself and I wanted to go in blind.

Why is the mindset "I have a lot of money to publish your game. Also me having money means I'm creative for some reason."
without publishers they couldn't make as many copies of the game distributed on many different retail platforms. So no publisher meant not alot of copies can be sold to different places and not enough money to function.

It was likely based on sales data. At the time, most shooters were more “real” like the Modern Warfare Games. And Halo was still military themed. A game with far out SCi fi and weirdness Would have been a huge risk

Fantastic! Can't wait for the next part! Publishers literally know nothing about what people want. They are responsible for serious lack of creativity, and game Devs are often making garbage which often they slave over working tons of extra hours only to have a game canned or un-publicised... What a waste of talent!

Publishers can pretty much be summed up in two phrases 'That makes money. Copy it', and 'This made money. Make a sequel'.
I'm glad we have successes like Warframe to educate them about the benefits of finding an untapped market. 'L4D in space' took a good idea and ran with it (and Vermintide's 'L4D in Warhammer Fantasy' has found success doing something similar in another direction. I may have to take another break from Warframe to try Vermintide 2). Meanwhile I bet there were no end of zombie survival coop games released shortly after L4D, that did get publishing deals, but can you name any that survived without a significant change from L4D's template?
I'd go so far as to say that success in the game industry only really happens through freeing up the kind of imagination and creativity that developers have plenty of, but publishers have none of (look at Portal, a game that came about because Valve took a gamble on what was originally a student project).
You can even look at WoW, the game whose success just about every publisher has tried to copy, with no end of fantasy MMORPGs crashing and burning in an attempt steal a good idea. About the only MMO that comes even close to WoW's success is EVE Online, and that's because it's _very_ different (and sc-fi ;) ).
That's what publishers don't get. If you're going to steal something, you need to run someplace else with it.
I have about 500 hours in Warframe, and before I'd discovered it I was hungry for a sci-fi PvE action game with MMO elements. It's shocking to me that publishers were so insistent that that sort of game wouldn't sell.

These really are some fantastic docs. You are doing an excellent job preserving the stories of the developers currently shaping the industry. You are clearly someone who truly loves the industry and knows exactly which questions to ask.

DE helped create games for the massive Epic Games, behind hits like Unreal (a personal DE project), Paragon, and the insanely popular Fortnite. Warframe's been incredible, defying all odds. Even now, in 2018, it is one of the most stunning games with incredible gameplay, massive depth, and absolutely astonishing developers. In a day and age where abominations like Battlefront 2 and No Man's Sky (on a lesser scale) exist, the way that Digital Extremes has refused to destroy their game with micro transactions and the steadfast support and continual updates they continue to deliver, their game has been around for 5 years and will probably stay around for many more. In terrible times where AAA developers deliver half-assed products, games blatantly copy popular, exclusive, unique game modes, DE provide the bes t Free To Play experience to the market. Thanks for making this incredible showcase of their trials. We love DE, we love Warframe, and we thank you for helping us share our game with the rest of the world. You have done us a great service.

As much as I love Warframe, I really wish it still played more like its earlier versions... watching these clips makes me kinda sad; back then, it felt so grounded and tactical. Felt like space ninjas. Now everyone just zooms everywhere, brainlessly coptering enemies to death or popping AOE abilities.
A sequel of Dark Sector with the old WF movement would be nice. Perhaps Soul Frame will do that?

Thank you for the Documentary! This was Greatly Done. I had the chance to attend Tenno Con last year and had to chance to meet the awesome people who make Warframe, and others at DE. The Documentary speaks to the quality of what exemplifies Digital Extremes. They always reach for the stars and beyond. This is an inspiring story, of how you have your dreams, and you go for them. Also it displayed how you try and keep those who help you reach that point. The passion and love that goes into the game is breathtaking. The sheer care, not only to the product, but to the consumers that play Warframe and other productions from the company says it all. Danny, thank you for this, and please keep up the good work.

what publishers dont realize that the massive hits are things no one knew people would love, or want. people dont know what they want. If you start making games according to what you think people want you are going to fail, or just make mediocre games, which is maybe more safe but you will never shoot up. you need to make your idea, not trying to pander.

i'm sure their figures support it, but i find the 'sci-fi doesn't sell' stance so bizzarre. in 20+ years of gaming, i don't think there has ever been a period when i wasn't playing sci-fi games. from elite, through doom, to halo and back to elite again. reminds me of the widely held belief among Hollywood executives that superhero movies wouldn't sell (until someone just went ahead and did it anyway).
This was so well done. I gave this game a try early in the PS4's first few months and it didn't click for me. But watching this makes me want to install it again immediately! Great job Danny and co. Can't wait for the next part!

Lucian Moreira Digital Extremes is in a great place now, they're definitely keeping the lights on, so you don't need to feel obligated to support them. They are a great developer though, and I understand wanting to support them.
I'm sitting on quite a lot of platinum made mostly from trading and I pretty much have everything in the game (minus the latest prime weapons and zephyr) and I still find myself throwing 10-20 bucks on the game when a -75% discount drops. I don't even know why I'm doing it, probably just because I want to pay for the amount of entertaining I'm getting out of this game.

I just made a video explaining why Bioware will be replicating this model for their game, Anthem. Warframe has found the secret to long term success, one that other industry giants are jealous of!
Are they really though? Sure both have suits of armor, but a lot of warframe's success comes from the soul put into it and it's generally extremely consumer friendly mechanics. I have my doubts about anthem with it's production following what destiny 1 ran into and the fiasco that turned into
if they did then it might actually be worth playing but you forget that EA is behind it. and they straight said that the issue with BF2 isnt going to stop them from putting lootboxes in other games.
the game is gonna turn into a p2w mess with required lootboxes. and until it comes out and prooves me wrong im sticking to it. and even if it dosnt. there is ALSO the extreamly high cahnce that its going to be a premium game with a f2p market. there is no way anthum is going to go F2P. its basically just gonna be destiny.

I had no idea that DE was this desperate. I just found a cool sci-fi space ninja game, and scrambled to get a close beta key (or 3) to play with my brother. And here I am, 5 years later, still playing Warframe, the game that publishers say should have failed.
We need a part 3 since so much has been added!

That's why publishers were afraid of it because they wanted something safe? Anyways, it fascinates me to hear these stories. Even now when the game is relatively successful, it still feels like an unsung hero. Please keep telling these amazing stories !

Warframe is incredible, DE has set the gold standard for F2P and microtransactions in a market dominated by extremely greedy and predatory business practices.

This documentary actually made me feel PROUD to be a Warframe founder back in 2013. The sequence at the end during the credits came this [ ] close to making me shed a tear. Simply amazing all around and the perfect end to part 2. THANK YOU and your patrons for this project

Personally and from my experience as someone who has been playing warframe for more than 4 years I have to say that despite the negative comments, being a game that not many people knew and that it comes from a small Studio, Warframe is one of the best games I've ever played and I still play it because of the love devs put on it. Look at the game 4 years ago, then compare to what it is now and the change is incredible.
Thank you for making this documentary, DE and Warframe deserves it.
Id love to see these types of videos on a bunch more studios there so interesting

Warframe is a last ditch effort story that succeeded they learned everything because they know without their community they will not exist today. That reason is why I love Warframe and DE so much even when I’m bored and no interested in playing I will always have mad respect for DE
